Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

Is it too much to ask for a numeric keypad on a 15" MBP? Good lord this is really starting to piss me off.
Apple has killed off the number pad in other PC models too. Those that do have one are skinny and either have idiotic arrow keys with shared up down arrows or they steal half of the zero.

How hard is it to bump the arrow keys down ! Yet almost no one does that.

Honestly, those specs are perfectly acceptable for running the included iLife apps for most "average," non-gaming consumers for 4-5 years (probably more). If you want to run blockbusters, or use more advanced apps like the Adobe suite or similar, the base 13" model will already be pushing it, probably. If you were looking at a Mac Mini, then the 13" MBP will likely be more than enough.

yeah.. honestly i can't do it... i'm researching a hackintosh now. Better more updated specs than the mac mini and upgradeable (fuck you Jony).

Honestly most of my uses are just browsing the web, ripping the occasional movie, streaming music/movie from my NAS.

@Dryden does a mac really need more than 8GB of ram?

My 13" MBP has 8Gb and I've never found myself needing more. I'm not using it as a desktop replacement nor do any video editing, so it suits my needs. Needed a new laptop last summer for remote access when I'm traveling, and since I do a lot of CLI based stuff with switch and router configurations and so forth, having OS X with a fully compatible shell and rcp/scp under the hood was a real selling point. The high density Retina display means I can run three text shells full height, or six in a grid, and easily read text on all of them. On a typical Wintel PC I'd be stuck with two and four. Also allows me to RDP at native 1920x1080 to a host in my server rooms, but on the MBP its a windowed session since that display actually runs at 2560x1600. Most demanding thing I do with it is probably the occasional game of Civ V, and it runs that with ease. Otherwise it's surfing, email, music, Netflix, and the like. Handoff and AirDrop are the real cool features though if you've already got iOS devices. I don't 'sync' anything anymore and don't need Dropbox. It gets really cool if you've also got an Apple TV, because now all the family photos and home movies are right over there because they're in iCloud.

Also run a 5K 27" Retina iMac at the office (we write hi-res mapping software, and a lot of our print clients use Macs, so we had to have one in-house to see what our clients see -- I took one for the team and volunteered to take the 5k iMac ... lol). It's a 16Gb system which can run Windows 10 Enterprise in a VM Fusion window without any performance hit.

Unless you need VM Fusion, Final Cut, or want to game on it, I honestly don't see any instances where more than 8Gb is necessary.

The worst part about the numeric pad on the Apple keyboards that have them is they do not make the "+" key two keycaps in height. It's a single chiclet with the "-" key right above and next to the '9'. It's incredibly easy on a Mac to hit + when you meant to hit Enter, and hit - when you meant to hit +. They're just unnaturally placed and fly against 50 years of adding machine muscle memory.

Big Apple event today. Watch series 3 has cell built in. Apple TV 4K launched (if you bought any HD movies from iTunes, you'll get the 4K version added to your account for free).

Holy crap. I just received a new MB Pro 15 inch for a project for which I needed a mac. We have three other macs in the house and I like them fine. They are a little long in the tooth these days, but are fine for media servers.

But good God... this thing is incredible. I was hesitant to make the switch and when it was being provisioned I had the choice of our standard install or right out of the box (we're doing some development work where standard permissions may get in the way). I had it provisioned as another machine for me on the off chance I liked it. After about five minutes I was intrigued. After 20 minutes I was hooked. After two days I replaced my 27 in monitors with 32 inch 4Ks and ordered a keyboard because I'm keep'n it. My dual head monitor arms are stretched to the limits...

The only thing that I've had an issue with so far is the keyboard shortcuts in Excel. Actually, general navigation in excel is something that I do with as little touching the mouse / touchpad as possible. The lack of some of the keyboard shortcuts will change that... but all in all? I may never go back. Crikies... these monitors give me vertigo when I scroll in BP.

Anyone considering a MB Pro? Don't hesitate.
