Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32 (Final!)

For your viewing pleasure, FSN Ohio will be replaying the Missagain - App State game at 10:30 tonight

At least, Thom Brennaman announced it on the Reds broadcast tonight. I can't find it on TVGuide.com or on my DirecTV TIVO, but supposedly that's what will happen.

I heard someone mention Miles today as a possible replacement and I couldn't contain myself. Man, that would be great.
I posted that in another thread, and on the mgoblog.

Les Miles = good for OSU
Bo Pelini = bad for OSU

lv mentioned karma. That would be it ... as we all laugh this week at Michigan's misfortune, this loss virtually guarantees that neither DeBord or English get the HC job when Carr retires. That means they'll go outside the program, and God forbid that means they'll find somebody better than what they've got.

Follow the money!!

From that earlier linked blog, this is the post that had me giggling -- oh, and after I have a story

What we witnessed on Saturday is an indication that we're in the final, terminal stage of Schembechlerism, a religious approach to football which, stripped of its positive qualities now that Bo is gone, has become a stale creed kept in place by rote observance and ritualistic repetition. Lloyd Carr has been an extremely loyal adherent to this philosophy, having learned at the foot of the master himself. However, like most acolytes in such positions, he's lacking in the founder's personal dynamism or charisma that can make up for the practical deficiencies in the ideology.

Schembechlerism asserts:

? It is never necessary to make a hard, realistic assessment of your own strengths and weaknesses as compared to your opponent's. This relieves you of the burden of developing game plans tailored to your opponent. We are Michigan, after all, and all we need to do is execute properly what we want to do anyhow. Of course, this also relieves the opponent of the necessity of preparing for anything that they haven't seen on tape or film already, but the element of surprise is very overrated and probably gay anyhow. It doesn't matter that we've averaged under 12 points per game against USC in Rose Bowls since 1970; we know each and every time we play them that we don't need to do a damn thing different than what we've done all season long. Why? We're Michigan, dammit.

? Speaking of unmanly things, anything smacking of subterfuge, trickery, or sleight-of-hand is also unholy and probably gay. Although the observation of this unspoken rule has in truth been spotty at times, it is only resorted to in extremis, like when we're down by 17 points in the fourth quarter at Minnesota. This is why Michigan will not use play action as part of the base offense. Just because an initial fake to Mike Hart will induce the entire defense to converge on his tiny person is no reason to use it. (Besides, according to Father Andy Mignery, using play action creates pass blocking problems. No word on how teams as diverse as USC and Boise State, not to mention the entire NFL, manage to solve that religious conundrum, but remember: we're Michigan. We don't need to look at what other teams do. Why? Because we're Michigan).

? Never, never hire a Special Teams coach with a recognized talent for that arcane part of the game. It is far better to have already overworked position coaches, or better yet, grad students, take control. Just because ST is one-third of the game is no reason to go crazy. This means you can do fine with LBs?as opposed to players with actual blocking experience?for critical blocking assignments. It also means you can refuse to double up gunners aiming for Steve Breaston's femurs. Kicking to Rocket twice is fine, too. To refuse to kick to him again is ever-so-slightly poofy. Having punts blocked is also good.

? Whenever possible, make sure your defensive backs line up at least 10 yards off the receiver and backpedal furiously at the snap.

Now, the rest of the story ....

The family was on a camping vacation this Labor Day Weekend. No TV, No Papers, but, thanks to the miracle that is modern science, we had radio - Satellite Radio.
The entire camp ground was like a snake alongside a river, flat-bottom valley. We are at the very beginning of that valley - listening to the Buckeyes on that radio.
The Buckeye game is coming in loud and clear, as the third quarter is underway with our team doing what D1A teams should do to D1-AA teams the announcers briefly break. It is then that we hear from the speakers under the canopy the infamous words "Appalachian State 28, Michigan 14."
Giggles ripple from our stand. Then, as the word is passed of TSUN's impending doom, against a team they only chose to play because they didn't want to face Hawaii, it becomes a wave of laughter which we can hear - as it crests - about a mile later at the top end of the campgrounds.

Then the whole thing happened again when App. State blocked the field goal and claimed their Wolverine Pelt.

What an absolutely awesome weekend. :osu:

164332. UofM to open at home
by jacksparrow2, 9/4/07 20:36 ET next year Michigan will again open at home and play a next-door neighbor. Ann Arbor Pioneer has agreed to play the Wolvies next year in a "neighborhood game." Pioneer is considered a 12 point favorite.

OSU fans seek token of Michigan's misery
Appalachian State gear in high demand

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

By 7:30 a.m. yesterday, a noticeably thick stack of orders rested on the fax machine at the Appalachian State University bookstore.

And the shop's four phone lines rang steadily all day.
Lorraine Childers and her crew were fielding requests from the school's newfound fans, including many Ohioans seeking T-shirts touting a North Carolina school that some had never heard of before the weekend.
"It's a wonderful type of busy," said Childers, the store's assistant director. "It's certainly a labor of love."
Appalachian State's stunning upset Saturday of then-No. 5 Michigan has hurled the school into the national spotlight -- and won the hearts of Ohio State fans.
Now, Buckeyes are clamoring for Mountaineer gear.
Within hours of the loss Saturday, OSU diehards -- never ones to miss an opportunity to rub defeat in the faces of Wolverine supporters -- snatched up Appalachian State shirts made and sold by at least one street vendor on High Street in Columbus.

Speed cited in Big House demise
Quick QB was too much for Wolverines, Big Ten coaches say

The Columbus Dispatch

About a minute remained in Wisconsin's game Saturday when coach Bret Bielema found himself standing next to an official on the sideline during a timeout. The official was staring at the scoreboard in Camp Randall Stadium. Bielema had other things on his mind.

"Aha! Appalachian State got 'em," the official said to Bielema.
"What?" Bielema said.
He spoke for millions.
Appalachian State's upset of Michigan is believed to be the first win in college football history by a championship subdivision (formerly I-AA) team over a ranked opponent. Michigan entered the game No. 5, but the loss dropped it out of the Associated Press Top 25. Appalachian State is the two-time defending I-AA champion.
"We were very much like, I'm sure, the Wolverines themselves and the Michigan faithful were -- (in) disbelief," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said of his reaction as he and his team watched the first half before preparing to take on Toledo.

Signs that you may have just played a Division 1AA team:

1) Your fans cheer louder at the misfortune of your arch-rival, than they do at any point during the actual game they just attended.

2) Your fans boo louder at an ad for a TV network than they do the opponent.

I posted this list in the thread on polls, but it belongs here for historical purposes.

Top 5 teams that dropped from the AP top-20 (1968 and earlier) or top-25:
1950 - #2 Tennessee (lost 7-0 at Starkville to unranked Miss. St.)
1959 - #2 Oklahoma (lost 45-13 in Evanston to #10 Northwestern)
1959 - #4 Army (lost 20-14 in Champaign to unranked Illinois)
1960 - #4 Illinois (lost 34-7 in Champaign to #5 Ohio State)
1968 - #5 Oklahoma (lost 45-21 in South Bend to #3 ND)
2007 - #5 Michigan (lost 34-32 in Ann Arbor to FCD/I-AA Appalachian St.)

Note to those wondering (from '62 though '67, the AP only ranked 10 teams. I didn't include teams from those years)

Our version after last year's game only has three characters:

5-1

I'll wear that over an App St. shirt any day.

Yeah, but your shirt needs to have the first character changed every year. The Appy State shirt is timeless.

Kind of puts into perspective just how big the upset really was.....According to their website- they are App States "long time rivals." A ticket to this weeks game will cost ya $20. I'm guessing the stadium is a little different than the "Big House."

The difference in Stadium Capacity is >90,000.

Damn, Tough crowd in the 60's. Oklahoma falls out from #5 for losing to a team that's supposed to be better than them on the road?

There used to be much more movement in the polls week-to-week, and that was a good thing.
