Alabama Crimson Tide (official thread of Football, Fake Championships and Banjo)

Alabama Crimson Tide names Mac Jones starting QB for opener

Mac Jones will be Alabama's starting quarterback when it opens the season Saturday against Missouri, coach Nick Saban announced Monday.

Jones, a redshirt junior, started four games last season when Tua Tagovailoa was injured. Jones threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions during a 35-16 win over Michigan :boogie: in the Citrus Bowl.

From Oct. 25 on, Jones posted the second-highest QBR (92.7) in the country behind only Joe Burrow, who won the Heisman Trophy and was selected with the first pick in the NFL draft.

Just sayin': Alabama is going to be the "cream of the crop" in the SEC. They are going to get in the CFPs even with a loss; so we might as well hope they run the table through the SEC Championship game. We don't want a 2nd SEC team in the CFPs, etc.

They allowed 647 yards.

Have we ever allowed 647 yards?

Unfortunately YES

FLASHBACK: OHIO STATE VS. ILLINOIS, 1980

Even with the win, the carnage wrought on the Ohio State defense was staggering. Wilson finished the day 43/69 passing for an NCAA record 621 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Illini had 659 total yards, although they helped the Buckeyes out with 7 turnovers. By comparison, Schlichter's 17/21 for 284 yards and 4 TDs looked like a weak effort.

I was going to look up the rushing yards, but I was at that game and remembered the 621 passing number. The Buckeyes held on to win only because the clock finally ran out. The defense was gassed for most of the second half, after having a 35-7 lead early in the third quarter. Fortunately they forced 7 turnovers.
