AAU Kicks Out Nebraska

Yes, Nebraska just got curb-stomped. While they may attempt an appeal, it is highly likely that will fail, if it is even heard. Most likely we'll be back in when reviews happen again - in ten years.

Indeed, by many measures, UNL has seen significant improvement in the past decade ? federal research dollars grew from $37.8 million in 1999-2000 to $83.7 million in 2008-2009. The number of freshmen with ACT scores of 31 or higher has grown from 260 in 2002 to 489 in 2010.

The AAU acknowledged that UNL?s federal research funding has grown 2.1 percent faster than that of the rest of the AAU membership during the past decade.

However, the AAU?s membership review committee ? headed by Larry R. Faulkner, president emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin ? found that even if UNL research continued to grow at the same rate for another decade, it would still remain at the bottom of the AAU.

Faulkner's statement should be amended to say, "Even if UNL research continued to grow at the same rate for another decade, it would still remain at the bottom of the AAU under current methods of measurement."

The AAU ignored one of their typical gauges, which is to assess a school's trajectory, when voting on expulsion. Nebraska's trajectory is clearly very much UP, and that's not even taking membership in the CIC into account. Without the CIC, UNL has a project underway which will make it a much stronger research school. This research park currently under construction was, apparently, not taken into account for the vote.

Why? Why was Nebraska chosen to be the only school ever removed from the AAU? It's not because of academics, which are better now than they were ten years ago. It's not because of trajectory, which is clearly on the rise. Doesn't make sense.

I smell a rat.

Possibly, but if UNL has been fighting this for a number of years then it is their fault - especially with a 9-1 vote on the committee.

Delany sure is on a cold streak:
Horrible names for divisions (L&L should have been the conference marketing slogan)
Terrible logo which was probably designed by the 5 year old of one of the fancy Pentagram consultants.
Bringing in a "university" which is on par with Cal State Fullerton.
Putting foot in mouth numerous times with statements regarding the SEC

When will this idiot get fired?

This is less about Nebraska being a good university than it is about the AAU saying, "We don't value the kind of research you do."

Nebraska isn't Harvard, but it isn't peanuts, either. Nor does this in any way alter what we were when the Big 10 came after us last year. We are, in fact, a better school this year than last. And we'll be better next year than this year.

In fact, we're in a better position now than we were ten years ago, and we weren't kicked out then.

Ask yourself what changed.

Sexy young chick from Georgia in heels and a polka-dot sundress wanted your parking spot, and you showed up to the meeting to complain a half an hour late wearing overalls, no make-up, and a torn Lawrence Phillips tee-shirt?

Just guessing...:p

UNL has long lagged on key indicators for membership in the AAU. It ranked dead last among the AAU's primary indicators measuring the strength and breadth of an institution's research - federal research expenditures, faculty credentials, awards and citations.

Perlman said that is because the indicators don't give adequate credit to UNL's strengths as a land grant university and center for agricultural research.

Indeed, by many measures, UNL has seen significant improvement in the past decade - federal research dollars grew from $37.8 million in 1999-2000 to $83.7 million in 2008-2009. The number of freshmen with ACT scores of 31 or higher has grown from 260 in 2002 to 489 in 2010.

First bold sentence and last bold sentence. Everything else is ding whining.

I've read a rumor that UNL not having a medical center on campus hurt them.

Here we are on the brink of perhaps a global food shortage and maybe even a catastrophe away from a large famine, but Ag research isn't that important at all.

If I were the Big Ten Presidents, and I'm not, but if I were, I would work with the other Big Ten schools to get Nebraska ready for 2020. First, I'd think about chipping into a fund to buy the UNMC and make it part of the UNL system since that's apparently one of the deciding factors. Then I'd try to figure out exactly what tipped the scales against Nebraska and start to mitigate them as best as possible while continuing the growth they are seeing in other areas.

I don't personally see this as cliff-diving territory for anyone, but drama is what drama does.

That's why Bobby Lowder wants to buy Auburn and figure out what it needs to do to join. It also is a large state land grant agricultural school, and it has one of the finest air-conditioning and refrigerator repair schools in the entire South.

Hell, we might as well have invited Truck Driver State to join us.
