AAU Kicks Out Nebraska

The University of Nebraska med school is in Omaha, and so research dollars spent there do not "count" for UNL.

Also take into consideration - Nebraska had been a member of the AAU for over 100 years....and the Med Center didn't just pick up legs and walk to Omaha in the last 10 years.

I get skeptical whenever a vote involves a Longhorn......:mad1:

Come on. If you think that that AAU Membership was the #1 sticking point to UNL joining the Big 10, you're sadly mistaken....

No, Nebraska was let in for football and football only. AAU membership was the fig leaf that the conference used to excuse their academic stature. Now that fig leaf has been blown away.

So many of the people on this board think that UNL should "focus on what the state needs." Too bad the same people refuse to acknowledge that Iowa has pretty much the same demographics as Nebraska - yet Iowa finds a way to invest in other research than making the corn grow taller and more yellow. Somehow people refuse to see it isn't a Ag versus everything else situation. UNL can do other research and 9-1 decision by the committe before the larger vote is NOT all political.

Absolutely. Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Minnesota, Illinois, Texas A&M and the University of California (Davis in particular) are all land-grant schools (most with higher ranked ag schools than Nebraska) that excel in multiple other areas and are in no danger of losing their AAU membership.

Agreed. All the member schools of the Big 10 Conference are also members of the AAU - they knew (and voted) on the status of Nebraska's membership to the AAU. So I don't think anybody on the Big 10 Conference's board is surprised by this ruling by the AAU.

I'd love to know which Big 10 school voted against Nebraska, LOL...

Iowa benefits greatly from the fact its medical school (which is world-class) is co-located with the undergraduate campus, as is Ohio State's. The University of Nebraska med school is in Omaha, and so research dollars spent there do not "count" for UNL.

I doubt that Iowa would pass muster with AAU if its med campus were in Des Moines.

A 9-1 vote from the committee and a 2/3rds majority vote from the body at large did not swing on the medical center. As one of the Corn fans stated the Med Center didn't just move to Omaha in the last 10 years.

Considering your own school chancellor stated all Big 12 schools were in favor UNL remaining in the AAU your skepticism is misplaced. Again, a 2/3rd majority didn't happen overnight.

And Pitt is an AAU school. Unfortunately their football usually sucks, but then there's Indiana...
