Not that I think Nebraska's a heavyweight this year, but they are 9-2 right now and ranked #14.

The undercurrent for this thread is the idea that Gene Smith "screwed up" by putting this season into bowl-ban status (and I remain unconvinced that banning ourselves last season would have necessarily meant we'd be bowl-eligible this year). With that said, my per-usual iconoclastic remark is this: he may have done us a favor.

I see absolutely no way that this Buckeye team would be able to win a BCS NC game against any of the likely opponents. We have way too many weaknesses. But if we beat Michigan, we'll still be unbeaten at 12-0, with no way to take that away from us. An unbeaten season - that's pretty freaking sweet under any circumstances. Not sure it isn't better to be unranked and unbeaten instead of 13-1 and losing by 24 points to another fucking SEC team in the BCS game.

And I think the fact we have no bowl hopes may have added to the incentive to win each game in the regular season. Had we been bowl-eligible, the team may have not had quite as sharp an edge when they needed it most - last night, for example.

Just another idea thrown out there.

I actually agree with this. 12-0 is/would be fantastic. It's something to build off of next year. But we've done it against an incredibly weak schedule. I don't like our chances against most potential opponents for a BCSNC. Just my IMO.

If what happened wouldn't have, then Tressel would still be coaching correct?
All due respect to JT, ( loved the man) But would there really be an 11-0 record ( possibly giving The Bucks a shot at the MNC ) with Jim Tressel as Head Coach? I'm not real sure about that.

Actually, the main topics of this thread is whether anyone other than AP or BCS awards NCAA titles anymore, and whether an undefeated OSU would leap a two loss BCS champion. But do carry on.

Here is the current AP top10:

Let's say Notre Dame loses at USC while we beat Michigan...no way ND doesn't drop beneath us. Alabama will likely play Georgia in the SEC title game...the loser will drop below us. The puts us #2 in the AP behind the SEC rep in the BCSCG going into the bowls.

Since ND had lost, if Oregon beats Oregon State, Oregon would likely go back up into the #2 BCS ranking and face the SEC champ in the BCSCG (I don't Kansas State can overcome the ass-whupping Baylor put on them). Unless ND wins big in their BCS bowl I don't see them jumping back over us in the AP. The loser of the BCSCG wil have two losses and likely will stay/drop below us in the AP poll, whether they were the AP #1 SEC champ or Oregon. If the SEC champ loses against Oregon they will drop below us, and Oregon will likely jump us...this scenario is our only real chance of being AP #1 since if the SEC champ beats Oregon and they're already ranked ahead of us, we'd remain #2 in the AP.

So, in summary, if Notre Dame loses at USC and the SEC champ loses in the BCSCG, we have a slim chance at finishing as AP national champs, provided we beat Michigan.

We could easily take on Notre Dame, and I assume that would be the match up if both schools won out. Against Alabama, however, we would get curb stomped. That being said, I would still much rather have a chance at a National Championship and get killed than go to the Gator Bowl and lose to a shitty Florida squad.
