A note to fairweather Buckeye fans...

This isn't going to be a cheery thread to start. I just got off the phone with my brother. He went down to the game on Saturday. I was pained to hear some of the things he told me.

He told me that even though there were a ton of fans in the stadium, that there were many that left the stadium with 8-10 minutes to go. And he left embarrased to be a Buckeye fan. Not from their poor offensive showing but by the poor showing of the fans. Acting arrogant when we had no reason to be. Turning into the classless fans we despise.

Just when the team could use our fans the most, they were leaving the team high and dry. Granted the team wasn't performing to our usual standard, but for all that is in me, if I travel all the way to South Beach to watch my Bucks I am staying til the bitter end cheering them all the way. Not saying this was everyone (as he told me that 30% of the starting fans stayed til the end) but 70% leaving is unreal.

I am getting fed up with this new era of Buckeye fan. Spoiled as any fan could have been in the last 10 years and they act as if they are owed something from the university. They turn off newcomers to Columbus who never had an issue with tOSU before encountering the fans. I have lived through bad times as a Buckeye fan. I have lived through good times. But when the shit hits the fan I am going to shout I-O to every O-H. I am going to cheer my Bucks whether they go 12-0 or 0-12. And I am going to welcome others into my city the way I would want to be welcomed. Full of class.

It's time to be the best damn fans in the land. It's time for the bandwagon fans to leave instead of trashing what I was born and raised to love. If you are going to embarrass my university, I personally don't want you to be a Buckeye fan anymore. Go root for someone else. Oregon enjoys trendy fans.

I am saying all this to urge the fans who have been thru thick and thin with me to show up this week. Saturday is over. We have a young team that needs our help this Saturday going forward. They need to feel our unwavering support. Whether we are happy with how things have gone thus far or not, we need to show them why they decided to come to Ohio State. Tradition, Excellence, and The Best Damn Fans In The Land.

So I will start in saying that I believe in this team. I believe they can shake out of this stagnate start. I believe these players and coaches will make it happen. and if not I'll lose my voice rooting (not booing) them on.

How firm thy friendship.

:oh:

Went to the MNC game in NOLA against LSU with my son a few years back and sat in a sea of LSU fans. There were only three other OSU fans in sight of us. All of us, me, my son and the other OSU fans stayed until the clock read 0:00. After taking some ribbing from some the the people seated around us for most of the second half because of the outcome of the game, once the game was over I actually had two LSU fans who were seated directly behind us comment on the fact that none of us left until the final seconds ticked off. Even though he had been giving us the business about the game while it was being played he commented specifically about the fact that we stayed with our team even when it was obvious that we were going to lose. Said that he really "respected" that (his words) and that it was not something he was used to seeing from LSU fans generally nor any other fans he could think of right off the top of his head. All that I could say was I couldn't image acting any other way. Kind of a no man left behind mentality I guess. Told him that's just the way we roll, don't know any other way. So without commenting on anyone else's "fandom" I guess those folks who acted that way and who will boo the team when Bauserman plays the next time need to ask themselves who they would most like to emulate. The folks who are loyal to a fault, or everyone else, cause in my world those are the only two choices. I know where I'll be. See you at the Colorado game.:io:

And to be honest I wasn't there. These thoughts came thru conversations of someone I trusted to give me a good perspective of the stadium. Also off of friends that I have seen completely turned off and turned into "haters" of the university. One of those friends wanted to root for Ohio State and he was put out by what he and his wife encountered. I also understand that everyone has different experiences and different thinking of what a fan should be. But if I spent my hard earned money to go all the way down there or to Tempe or to So Cal, I am staying in my seat and cheering my ass off. being a buckeye for me has never been and will never be trendy. And I commend fans of other programs that have had it worse and still stick by their team.

If you were there and you lasted it out then I am commending you in supporting our guys. I hope you are in the Shoe on Saturday with me.

Great post by the OP, but two counter points.

1. This is no
new era of Buckeye fan.
It has always been this way and always will for all teams in all sports. Many fans want to associate with winners so they can stroke their own egos. When things go bad they want to create distance for the same reason. The better your team does the more of these fans you accumulate and the more obvious it is when they bail.

2. OSU has not played in Florida for many years. There are a huge number of retirees from Ohio down there. For many of them this is the first chance they have had to see the Buckeyes in person for some time. Not much of a show.

Losing, and even losing bad after you at least put up a fight for a while, is hard to take. But after two Miami possessions there was not much to cheer about for a very long time. I went to the OSU-Pitt game in 1988 when we lost 42-10 with those 10 points coming late. I never got to unload an iota of the emotion I brought with me. I stayed until the end, but all I could think about was getting away from there and putting the entire experience behind me.

Never boo your team unless:

1. One of your players intentionally fails to give an effort. e.g. Randy Moss

2. One of your players/coaches does something particularly egregrious to warrant a personal foul penalty. e.g. Robert Reynolds, Woody Hayes

Never leave a game early unless:

1. It's unseasonably hot, cold or otherwise difficult weather for you and/or the people you are with. Although you should probably look at the weather report before going, and if you can't handle it, find someone else to go.

2. You're on the road; it's a pretty bad blow out; and the opposing fans are throwing things at you. e.g. Penn State

3. You're at home; the Bucks scheduled an in-state pansy and the starters have already been pulled.

4. You suffer a serious injury and/or are dead.

5. You neglected to take a nap after back to back double shifts and had been up for over 40 hours, with an hour to drive, and are already hallucinating

Is it possible to be a fair-weather fan when the weather is soooo good for like 11 months out of the year? I mean, I'm okay with a winter every now and then and by "winter" I mean San Diego and Florida and "every now and then" I mean never.

Go Buckeyes?

I don't remember ever booing my team (high school, college, pro, anything). Especially in high school and college, the athletes are just kids, basically. In fact, I'd boo a coach before I'd boo a player.

Having said that, I was swearing at the TV a lot on Saturday night, and trying to come up with a good reason for Fickell to not call time out at the end of the game. I just didn't get it, still don't. Miami was marching, somewhere in the middle of their last drive you at least call one time out to regroup and call something radical on defense, a sell out blitz, something.

But if I'd been sitting right behind the bench, I would NOT have booed.

Prediction this week: OSU 27, Colorado 17.

Go Buckeyes!

I'd be buying a ticket or two and doing the same thing this Saturday if I had the money. Even with reduced prices on tickets I can't do it. It's the last half of the month and my budget is already on the hook for my trip to the previous home game, a plane ticket to Denver at the end of this month, my wife's birthday and our first wedding anniversary.
"Happy Birthday Honey - I got you tickets to see the Buckeyes. And I can't wait till you open your anniversary gift and see how great the seats are....!!"

This. A thousand times this.

People forget how fans reacted after the loss to UCLA in Tressel's second game...How fans reacted in 99 after the loss to Miami in the kickoff classic...How they behaved throughout much of Earle Bruce's tenure (before he was hailed as a wrongly treated hero at the end of his final season)...Hell how the fans treated Woody Hayes over much of his long stay as the face of Buckeye football.

Ohio State fans behaving like spoiled children is nothing new.

Wearing my OSU polo at work...no one has given me an ounce of shit, yet. And if they do, I'll just point to the logo on my shirt and tell them at least I have the balls to wear the shirt even after a disappointing loss because I'm a true fucking fan...

I have long maintained that the best thing that could happen for the gameday experience is to have a really shitty season (or two). That way all of the bandwagon fucksticks would go the fuck away.

I got my OSU shirt on and I sported flags on my vehicle all day yesterday. Fuckers ain't gonna make me back down.

Also, as for leaving early, a large alumni base is in Orlando, a good 3-4hr. drive away. If things looked as bleak as they did Saturday, I'm looking at a 3-4hr. drive, and it is already 9 or 10...yeah, I'm getting on the road when I feel its out of reach. Sorry if that doesn't make me a "true fan," but you wouldn't find me waiting any longer than needed before I start that drive if the game was going as horribly as it was Saturday.
