anyone worry about the fact that none of our guys have played in the tournament? in a game between teams this close that has to play a factor.

The second game is much more of a challenge. I am not sure that this game is that close after looking at the Pomeroy site.

Siena

  • 0-4 (0%) against teams ranked in the top 50
  • 4-5 (44%) against teams in the top 100.
  • They beat 3 teams ranked above #100 in the power rankings: #70 Niagara twice, #82 Northern Iowa, and #100 Cornell. All of these wins were at home.
  • Of their 34 games, Siena played 12 (36%) against teams ranked below #200.

Ohio State

  • 9-9 (50%) against teams ranked in the top 50. Five of these wins were played away or on neutral courts.
  • 13-10 (57%) against teams in the top 100.
  • Of their 33 games, Ohio State played 3 (9%) against teams ranked below #200.
Siena is a good team with a power rating about the same as Northwestern. We should win the game but could lose it if we are complacent and sit back on defense. The difference between Siena and Northwestern is that Siena possibly could be a bit overwhelmed by the large arena and hoopla of a tough game on a neutral court with many more Buckeye supporters.

Siena got hosed by the Committee; they are playing an away game against the Bucks, much as we did in the BTT final against Purdue.

Great analysis, Steve.

Numbers are a bit fuzzy

One luxury Siena doesnt have is the shear number of games you get against the top 50 AND the ability to get those teams on your home floor. Siena has three games against teams ranked 26-50 all are Niagara. Teams ranked outside of the top 25 but in the top 50 arent exactly beating Siena's door down to play them as its a good chance at an 'L'.

notice the importance of Home games... as OSU has ONE away W in the top 50... @ #43 Michigan.

top 25 records ... Siena 0-4 no home games, OSU 3-7 with a 1-3 record in games away from home.

I sure hope a "Home crowd" gives us an advantage, but based on the Siena scores at Pitt & at Kansas, and the fact that they were in the NCAA Tourney last year (with a win to their credit) they don't seem to me to be a group that gets caught in the headlights so to speak.

Personally, I feel that the success at the NIT last year should help this team. Granted, it's not THEE Dance; however, they got to play more than one game in a tourney atmosphere. I would think that would account for something.

No shame in losing two road games in conference.

Thanks guys for your feedback. We always don't get opposing fans as classy as you two guys have been. Truly appreciate the insight into Siena's basketball. No one would know it better than a Siena fan. Thanks again:highfive:

I think it's the same guy, and he's Siena's bkb. If you say 'SienaHoop' real fast, it comes out 'Soup'.

Experienced Siena unlikely to suffer NCAA stage fright
Tuesday, March 17, 2009 3:11 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

Often in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, a big-conference team can intimidate a mid-major merely by the name on its uniform.

The Ohio States, Kansases and Pittsburghs are regulars on national television. Mid-majors toil in obscurity and can become flustered when they take the court with the big names.

That will not be an issue for the Siena Saints when they play Ohio State in a first-round Midwest regional game Friday night.

Sure, Siena plays in an under-the-radar conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Sure, when most people hear their name, they think of the color -- burnt sienna ranks No. 44 on Crayola's 64-crayon roster -- not the Saints basketball team, which is No. 18 in the Rating Percentage Index.

But when the Saints meet the Buckeyes in Dayton, Siena will not feel out of place. As a No. 13 seed last year, Siena crushed Vanderbilt 83-62 in a first-round NCAA game before losing by 12 to Villanova.

With all five starters back, Siena decided to schedule the big boys in its nonconference schedule this season. So while most of the major powers loaded their schedule with visiting cupcakes, Siena played teams such as Kansas, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State and Tennessee. The Saints lost those games -- the closest a seven-point margin against Kansas -- but they hope the experience will pay off now. Siena's nonconference schedule ranked second toughest in the country.

OK, you are citing the RPI rank. I used Pomeroy because the ranks are from a predictive model that is much better at predicting likelihood of game winners, total points, and possessions.

NCAA men's tournament: OSU sells out tickets -- all 550 of them
Tuesday, March 17, 2009 3:05 AM
By Encarnacion Pyle

Ohio State University sold all of its tickets to the men's basketball game in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton within minutes yesterday morning.

Although the University of Dayton Arena holds about 13,000 people, Ohio State received 550 tickets. Of those, only 144 went to students and to faculty and staff members who were season-ticket holders.

"There were no public tickets," said Dan Wallenberg, athletics department spokesman.

"We understand people are frustrated," he said. "But there's just a small amount of tickets for huge demand. There's nothing we can do about it."

Men's basketball: OSU Insider

By Bob Baptist

Coming up: Siena
Where: University of Dayton Arena, Dayton
When: Approximately 9:40 p.m. Friday
TV: CBS
Radio: WBNS AM/FM (1460/97.1)

The week that was
The young Buckeyes seemingly got a second wind, sprouted some chest hair and morphed into a tougher, more aggressive bunch than they were in the closing weeks of the Big Ten regular season. The No. 5 seed in the conference tournament, Ohio State outfought No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 1 Michigan State to advance to the championship game for the third time in four years. There, the Buckeyes lost the lead against No. 3 Purdue by failing to match the Boilermakers' energy early in the second half, then pushed them to the finish before losing 65-61. "I told (the players) afterward (I was) proud of our effort here in the three days," coach Thad Matta said.

The week ahead
No rest for the weary. The Buckeyes bused home from Indianapolis on Sunday night, pulled into the Schottenstein Center at 10 p.m., and four players had 8 a.m. final exams yesterday. They leave Wednesday for Dayton, where they will practice Thursday before playing the nightcap of a first-round quadruple-header Friday. As an old sports editor once said, "You're young. You can do it." If the eighth-seeded Buckeyes defeat No. 9 seed Siena in the first round, they likely will face Louisville, the tournament's overall No. 1 seed, on Sunday. But that's a large "if." Siena, which as a No. 13 seed last year upset No. 4 Vanderbilt in the first round and returns most of that team, swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season and tournament titles. The Saints (26-7) were 0-4 against teams from the six major conferences -- losing to Tennessee, Oklahoma State, at Pitt and at Kansas -- but the average margin was 10.8 points. Siena finished 18th in the Rating Percentage Index, with a No. 66 strength of schedule; Ohio State was 32nd in RPI, with a No. 24 strength of schedule.

Outside the lines

Some folks, especially Louisville fans, are wondering how Ohio State, as a No. 8 seed, gets to play 75 miles from home. Some sense a conspiracy to sell tickets, not to mention ambush the top-seeded Cardinals in the second round. Selection committee chairman Mike Slive replied that the "home court/vicinity" criteria, which is supposed to benefit the top four seeds in a region, applies only to first-round games. "We don't project who's going to win games," he said. "Once we set the field ... we only protect in the first game." Slive said the Buckeyes were placed in Dayton "because that site was available when we went to them in the bracket. ... There were no obstacles or issues. There were no other Big Ten teams they could meet in that region before the regional final, which was a very difficult issue we had to deal with this year ... because we had three conferences with seven teams."

Quotable

"This wasn't quite Mackey Arena, but it was pretty doggone close." -- Matta, comparing the atmosphere inside Conseco Fieldhouse on Sunday to Purdue's home court
