A large earthquake hit near the coastline in Chile early this morning (3:34 am their time, 2 hours ahead of Eastern). The epicenter was just off the coast, about 200 miles SW of Santiago.

A tsunami warning (the highest level of alert), has been issued for Hawaii, where the waves could reach early this afternoon Hawaii time.

The tsuamni alerts have been issued as far away as Russia and Alaska. Russia is about 11,000 miles from Chile.

Evacuation sirens just sounded, even up here in Mililanl (my house is exactly 1,000 ft above sea level). Lots of folks at Walmart, etc., getting supplies. Maybe I should go get some beer...

First wave is estimated to hit at 1119 AM HST (about 5 hours from now).
