8.8 Earthquake hits Chile, tsunami warning for Hawaii Saturday afternoon
Out at the Santa Monica cliff now.... Water is very flat, so we should be able to see a wave coming in from the ocean.... A bunch of others waiting to see also
I'm imagining a big party like the people on the rooftops in Independence Day.

T-minus 15 minutes or so before the first wave is supposed to come ashore on the Big Island.

EDIT: Sirens are sounding again...I'm assuming they're the 30-minute-warning sirens, so the first wave must be about a half hour or from Oahu.

A couple of the lighter moments from today:

- Had to run up to the store to grab a few things and the cashier lines were obviously full. So, the store manager opens up the register at the photo counter to help with the situation, and sure enough, a lady cuts right to the front of the line, demanding service for pictures.

- Almost everyone in the line I was in was buying some form of liquor.

- Overheard a guy and a girl discussing "the wrap-around" effect. I tried not to laugh too loud.

- The only bad traffic situation that I heard about was people driving up to a lookout point called Tantalus. CNN was trying to make it sound like it was people heading to higher ground, but it was idiots trying to get a better view. The police had to shut down the road due to minor accidents.

- Speaking of idiots, guess you saw one of the surfers heading out for the "big wave." A tsunami is more of a surge than a clean, breaking wave, and the water underneath the surface gets very turbulent. Some of those guys are lucky that the situation didn't change in a short period of time.

- Thanks to all of the BPer's who expressed their concern.

Well, a whole lot for nothing (fortunately). Most action was quick tidal surges, where it was like the tide going completely low and then completely high in a matter of a few minutes vice hours. Most of these surges were no more than a meter or two. The biggest variation I heard was Barber's Point (IIRC), where their surge was about six feet.

Drinking a six pack of Sierra Nevada ale to wash down a loco-moco (white rice with a hamburger patty, gravy, and a fried egg on top). Danger averted.
