Ohio State 74, Indiana 67
Ohio State charges past Hoosiers By Terry Hutchens
The Indianapolis Star

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Not surprisingly, Greg Oden was the most dominant big man on the floor last night in Value City Arena.
The surprise was that Ohio State did more damage against Indiana University with the 7-foot freshman on the bench for 10 minutes in foul trouble.

BY HERB GOULD Staff Reporter
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With new Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson and 7-foot Ohio State phenom Greg Oden both making their Big Ten debuts Tuesday night, the start of one era or another was going to be spoiled.

the hoosiers. a nice game and nice club. i dont like sampson, i dont think he was the right choice for the job. i dont like his 357 illegal fun calls, i dont like that indiana hired a guy who by hiring him put them on probation. i didnt like the push. but i give sampson a lot of credit after tonite. he used his timeouts wisely. he killed run after run with them. as he should, but so often it doesnt work out as planned. he used those timeouts and made changes, he came out of those tos ran a good sets and got baskets. while he is no bob knight xs and os he showed me tonite why he was hired. we will see as his cards are played and his tendicies are more studied by the b10 coahces as he plays more games in the b10 how he looks, but i give sampson credit for his gameplan, execution and changes.

Spot on JO. I was really impressed with them. Especially defensively. Very well coached. That was my biggest take from the game. I like the way we're learning. Biggest concern for me, and I've said this before, is Coach using all the talent available to him. To me that's gonna be the toughest thing to accomplish all year. Just a hell of a lot of weapons on that bench. I guess that's a good problem to have. Not an easy one to solve though.

My question on the permiter defense is why all the open shots?

It is is coming when teams are reversing the ball after a ball screen. Guys are not rotating fast enough and then when they are out there they are leaving their feet leaving penetration and kick.

I am a fan of switching all screens if you have guys like we have that can match up with any of their guys, but I am not for a guard to post switch which we seen some of last nite. At one point I saw Conley trying to guard White. Good thing IU didnt recognize this early enough.

One thing I really like is the 1-3-1 half court trap that we were running. It seemed to force IU into some TO's, but this is also(while we were in zones) when IU really got quite a few open looks.

stadium dorm in dead on here. not saying he isnt a good player, but lack of a perm shot, or confidence in the shot and the fact he dribbles too much is tough to overlook by me.

I think this might be the first disagreement of the season. :tongue2:

But my take on it is that Conley really doesnt lack a perm shot. It might not be the greatest, but he really doesnt shoot the 3. Teams still have to respect it to the point where they have to close out on him or he like most any other decent shooter when given time to get the feet set makes them better shooters. The thing is that even if teams back off is that it is not effecting his ability to penetrate and get to the rim. Also not sure that I see the dribbling too much. I have seen this while teams are playing zone, especially the time last nite when we got the shot clock violation and that was partly due to Conley and him not getting us in the zone O quick enough and then not pushing the issue. Overall the kid is improving and once he improves those quarterbacking skills in terms of coaching the team on the floor he will be even better. IMO he is only here 2 years...

one reason why the team sometimes has issues with the zone is that the ball isn't rotated fast enough, and that's not entirely conley's fault. if the team commits to a faster rotation and sends someone to the key when the ball's rotated, we'll see teams drop out of the zone quicker or at least have major problems. of course, the team needs to hit the shot from the outside with reliability before that happens. having oden is another reason why we'll see the zone a lot this year.

Good point. Also, I like to see a little more dribble penetration in the zone offense. That allows for a number of positive things to happen, a kick out for a 3, an inside post pass, or even a quick reversal for an open shot. Not always easy to do but with good gap penetration and good post play, frequently you can force the other team out of a 2-3 or even a 1-3-1.

I agree, but that was the one time when we had the shot clock violation that Conley pounded the ball upwards towards half court and Lewis had to end up forcing an airball 3 pointer as the shot clock went off.

We have the slasher to penetrate and kick while teams are playing zone. If we shoot like we are capable of and rotate the ball to make the zone work to its fullest we will very tough to play zone against, espeically with backside rebounding from Oden and Hunter.

Good point. And there were a couple of times where Conley got inside the zone, but missed the open guy on the perimeter. If he gets that down, we'll be able to kill the zone.

Yeah I was there as well and I found it pretty pathetic that during the game everyone is sitting down and so reserved but when a time out comes and the cheerleaders throw t shirts out everyone nearly shits themselves. Too bad they don't play in St. Johns, that place could get really loud.

I bet that made quit a stir! "Hey, look! Abraham Lincoln is back from the dead and is attending an OSU game!"

Am I the only one that's not all that impressed with Conley?
Well, you sure can't count me among your troop. I think Mike Conley was the most important player for the Buckeyes last night, and overall he was the best player on the floor. He took the game over in the last 5 minutes; his court vision is almost too good to be believed. On a night when Buckeyes' perimeter shooting was off (you could see it even in the shootaround), Conley allowed the Bucks to establish a powerful inside game by virtue of his penetration and passing.

Perfect? Of course not. But damn good.

40 you can pick on every kid out their on the floor. the point is the easiest to pick on to me. how much time is the ball in his hands? he touches it 8 seconds min on every trip down the court.

the dribbling too much. it wasnt so obvious but rewatch some of the game against the gators. bigger, quicker teams expose that. he was just a little late. granted that extra dribble can prevent tos, but i tend to think he dribbles too much and has a tendency put the ball on the floor an extra time.

the shot. or lack of. if he knocks down a few they cant sag so far off him. sure when they are man up on him when he was the ballit may make it harder for him to drive, but when the ball is swung to him it actually makes it easier for him to attack the rim, his man is farther off him and away from the basket playing the drive of the man with the ball.

as i said you can knit pick all day on any of the kids. the kid can play no questions.

only staying two years. i have no idea how long conley or anyone will be around. i dont know how guys prouject to the next level. thats not my thing. i do know cook oozes nba to me and oden is a lottery pick. honestly i could careless and hope the could too. sure it would be nice to have a big time super star in the league, or even better have a couple of all stars to throw out there with redd but i could care less about the garbage of basketball they call the national basketball association theses days (thats disagreement number two for sure).

perm def. i see some switching but im seeing a lot of hard hedging, i think it goes back to the reasons earlier. a combo of all of them. what percentage are other teams actually shooting from three land?

also im all for attacking zones, im not really a fan of standing around and shooting teams out of the zone. attack it, kick for the jumper, dish to a guy going to the rim. dump it out for the open 3.

absolutely. we saw a little bit more of that penetration last night. there's a reason why lewis got eight free throw attempts. both conley and cook are willing to drive, though at times it seems that cook forgets he's on a team and decides to shoot regardless of what the defense is offering. then again, he regularly makes tough, off-kilter shots. he is one heckuva passer and does see the court, though, as noted by that great oop to (hunter).

oh, was it just me or did yesterday's game have the most monstrous dunks that we've seen from the bucks in... who knows?
