#6 Ohio State 74, Indiana 67 (Final)

Hey guys way to keep everything going. Out here in AZ without an internet connection for the most part. Really sucks! I'd like to add my two cents on what is happening with our guys at the moment.

- The Greg Oden factor:

Without Greg in the middle our guys were flying around on both ends of the floor. On offense we were quick to run and everybody was flying to the hoop. On defense we were playing fast and causing turnovers, our help D was still a little sluggish but better than it has been the last 4 games.

With Greg I've noticed our guys are standing around! On offense, halfcourt, Greg is occupying the middle and usually getting great position. I don't know if our guys are afraid to clog that up or what but there is no "flash" to the ball. Guys just standing on the perimeter watching Greg get position underneath. If one of our wings were to flash the elbow or foul line with the ball on the opposite side of the court we would get much quicker ball movement and more shots in the paint. IMO they need to use Greg as a shield so to speak to put pressure on the other team at the basket. Greg is going to get more offensive rebounds and open shots with the ball coming off from in close than he will from us jacking them up. Conley would be deadly flashing the lane with and without the ball, Cook also. Our 3 point shooting will get better I have no doubt.

On Defense with Greg I just cant place the problem other than we seem to be flatfooted after one switch. The guys backside have to rotate quicker and allow Greg to roam the lane. It appears he gets somewhat pinned down low because the other team either penetrates all the way to the basket and kicks or they flood backside leaving Greg 1 on 2 or 3.

We just haven't gelled with Greg out there yet and my opinion is because we are leaning on him a little too much. He's a great player and a force for sure but we just need to incorporate him into what we do best instead of changing everything to surround him I think. Cook has to play more and Butler has to take charge sooner or later. Some big games coming up so I guess we'll see.

My .02 anyway. Keep it coming guys. Go Bucks!!!

Bestbuck you bring up a good point about Oden clogging the middle some on O. That got me thinking with as much penetration as these guys like to do why not let Oden set some high screens and then roll to the basket, if the penetration is not there Oden could either end up with a mismatch or the guy that had to rotate to guard him would leave his man wide open and most of the time that would be a guy that could hit the 3 ball.

he hasnt shown he can catch the ball in any kind of traffic. his man would sag so far off him due to the fact we have yet to see a set shot from him. its all about his wrist. with a healthy one yes this is a good idea.

and with all respect to othello hunter his hands are average at best. i dont see that as a viable option. (on a side not i love how hunter if he gets the rebound he takes it back up, no matter what no questions asked)

i see the sagging of as a product of conley. maybe i didnt make it clear why i was critical of his shot. his inability to hit the 3, and/or willingess to take the 3, allow for overrotation off him, freeing him up to drive, but clogging the floor up for everyone else. in the simplest terms, conley causes an unbalanced floor. defensives and offensives can both exploit this.

But the guy guarding Oden is still going to have to hedge the screen or else that player will be open for the jumpshot. That would be a perfect play for say a Cook or Butler who can shoot the ball well off the bounce.

Then if no one hedges on say a Conley or Lewis they take the ball to the hoop till either Oden's guy stops them, they go straight to the hole or another defender steps over, and also if Oden's guy has to stop them, then the possibility to get to about the elbow and as Oden's guys stop him he could either beat him, being as he will be a big guy or Oden who would probably have a smaller guy rotated on him could look for the lob.

The pick n' roll is a play that can not be stopped if ran correctly. Just my 2 cents.

correct it cant, if you have a guy who can catch the ball. at this point we dont have that. in a month...very very good idea. at this point, i dont think so.

then you bring in the oden conditioning. hes playing in the 20s minutes a game. and at this point hes still at the point were hes walking up the floor atleast half a dozen times, behind the ball. right now matta is riding him and running him ragged on the def end of the floor. i dont see him moving him so much on the offensive end, unless you want to decrease minutes and or effort on the defensive or intensity in general.

he has been in high intensity situations how many times since june? the conditioning will come, but hes still awhile off, which is scarey also.

Well I am talking more in the half court sets when he is in the middle clogging it up not allowing for penetration to rim. Not all the time, just enough to mix it up a bit. Maybe pick n' rolls would work better with Harris as then you have the pick n pop threat but he is to start hitting the jumper again with some consistency.
