52 Movies You Must See Before You Die

Dammit - I had enough to do just to get through the first list!

I like the inclusion of The Searchers, I think John Ford is one of the greats.

I saw The Leopard, and personally, I wouldn't include it on any list of movies that I'd recommend to anybody. I don't have anything against period pieces, costume dramas, or foreign language films, but I found it pretentious and boring. To each his own.

Yes, there's bound to be many movies on that list which are not everyone's "cup of tea." That situation is only exacerbated if the movie in question happens to be long in duration which, for The Leopard(185 minutes), is certainly the case.

A movie I would high recommend is "Once Upon A Time In America". You may have to rent the movie, it was released in the mid eighties, and I haven't seen it rerun on TV since. Here's a link to a review:

Solid, but good lord that movie draaaaaags....

I have not had time to post anything about this list when I read it a few weeks ago. I think it is solid, but there are a few glaring holes.

Just off the top of my head:

Trimph of the Will. Lenni Rufenshtall. Tribute to Hitler, but it is one of the most amazing Pre WW2 movies made.

The Third man should be higher- quintesential Film Noir

Battleship Potemkin - Classical silent film, HUGE cast, Russian 1920's.

I have serious issues with a list that does not have Goodfellas on it.

Too many Hitchcock movies. Seriously, we get it. He was brilliant. But...

But all in all, that is one of the better lists I have seen.

I would add that American History X was pretty intense and must see.

No disrespect BL, I certainly have heard other people say that. That was one of the most simplistic movies ever. Some neo-natzi kills a dude by stomping his head, goes to jail and sees the light because he is be-friended by a black guy, he repents and comes out all kumbya? Sorry, I am lumping that one in with Deerhunter and Scarface as the most overrated of all time.
I think it was intense because Edward Norton is a stud and can carry any movie.

Been awhile since I have seen AHX, but why would you say Scarface is overrated (I agree on Deerhunter, I still fall asleep everytime I watch it)? Watch Cocaine Cowboys, which is a documentary on the drug trade in Miami in the time period that Scarface was set, and you will see that it is more than just an over the top movie about a drug lord, but more of a fictional acount based on what was actually going on down here at that time.

Well that may be true, but his intensity alone is enough to put it above 75% of the crap that is out there IMO. I dunno, I guess I don't see it as simplistic...I think I liked it because it dealt with subject matter in a more mature and complex way than most movies are willing to. The intensity of the racism, the fact that there was actually a reason behind his racism besides the old "he's just a braindead white guy who doesn't know any better", the fact that no one was anywhere close to perfect in the film, but that even the most bitter racist 'might' have good qualities underneath, the fact that he only saw the light after being raped in prison, how fast all his 'friends' turned on him, the face he saved himself in a way but couldn't save his brother, who he had lured into the whole thing...it's not subject matter that the PC crowd wants studios to make.

I think the ending was over-simplistic. Clearly the subject matter was edgey, and EN was amazing. But, I think the simplistic nature of the ending did not do justice to the deeply entrenched hatred that the Neo Nazis carry in their hearts. That runs too deep to change becasue one guy befriends you in jail. My 2c. I liked it, it's just not a must see or top 50 movie IMO.

Scarface. Liked the first 1/2 of the movie. The escape from Cuba, the camps, the rise to the top all very interesting. The piles of coke on the desk, the fight against 100 Columbians with his little friend...blah. It did have some memorable quotes though. I liked Michele Phiefer's boobies...

Very good movie that never got the respect it deserved. Sergio Leone wanted to release it in two ~3 hr parts, but cut it to 229 mins for European release, where it was a hit a Cannes. The studio thought it was too long for American audiences and chopped it to 134 mins without Leone's input; it flopped in the states. The 2 disc DVD has the 229 min version.
