52 Movies You Must See Before You Die

The Great Dictator or The Gold Rush (Barber chair and dancing fork potato scenes, respectively)

I'm partial to Modern Times, still fresh and relevant some 70+ years later.

With all due respect to LJB's list, I'd like to name some of the directors (not on Jeff's list) who I feel made significant and unique contributions to the history of film:

Cecil B. Demille (The Ten Commandments)
John Ford (The Grapes of Wrath)
Sydney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Network)
Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront)
Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch)
Mike Nichols (The Graduate)
Woody Allen (Annie Hall)
Robert Altman (M*A*S*H)
Alan Parker (Midnight Express)
Brian DePalma (Blowout)
Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven)
Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing)
Danny Boyle (Trainspotting)
David Fincher (Fight Club)
Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood)
Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich)
Wes Anderson (Rushmore)
Guy Ritchie (Snatch)
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel)

Thanks LJB for all the effort. Will definitely go through.

I have to admit that as much as I would like to enjoy it... I couldn't stand Citizen Kane. Maybe it's because I watched it under the auspices of being something superb, and it left me wanting.

I tried to watch Eraserhead about 15-20 years ago. I found it depressing, awful and repulsive - my brother concurred. We turned it off.

Maybe I'll try it again some time.

I don't think that's an unreasonable response to it.

I think I'd be more worried if that wasn't the response to it, much like Requiem for a Dream and Funny Games. If they don't make you feel terribly uneasy, perhaps you need some meds.
