5 players suspended for 5 games in 2011 regular season (Appeal has been denied)

Tressel has to go to bat for his players and try to get them the minimum possible sentence. You know, like a lawyer would do for his clients.

Oh, I think Tress has thought a lot about his players...and a bat. :tongue2:

I know what you are saying, but I'm sure that Tressel would rather take a load of crap from the media for "allowing" his eligible players to play than to have his entire team think that he's selling out five kids who were "guilty" of small-scale stupidity.
LJB, if you must quote me saying how "Tress got their suspensions put off ," I would consider it a real kindness to include the next sentence where I said that would be a false statement.

Mutt bastard

I would sit them for the bowl game. I would think this would help with the appeal process. Say look, we know this is unacceptable. We benched these guys for the biggest game of the year. Maybe they lower the 4 remaining games in 2011 to 2 or 3. The guys may stick around for next year if they are only missing two or three games.

In my IMO, the Sugar Bowl is less of a big deal the than the Rose or Title game. This season is in the books. Lets worry about not ruining next year too. 1 BCS bowl should equal Akron and Toledo.

I disagree. We're playing in one of the major bowls with a lot of exposure. Showing up without Pryor and the boys and getting trounced isn't what the doctor ordered.

Besides, I'm not convinced sitting them for the bowl is an option that would buy leniency in this case. Don't underestimate the value the Big Ten and ESPN put on BCS bowls, the investments made and the need for ratings - money talks. The NCAA has allowed those parties to run these bowls so why wouldn't they let them influence this issue as well? There is no interest in TV sets in Ohio tuning out or reservations being cancelled because OSU's star QB isn't playing. These parties have no interest in trading the bowl game for Toledo and Akron, either.

more silver linings: who can claim our players are on the take if they're selling championship rings?

I think I just thought of another silver lining.

It is 2 days before Christmas. I have a 3 month old healthy baby boy and a 7 year old healthy and happy daughter (who just rained in 6 pts in her first basketball scrimmage of the year). I am going to visit my 88 year old grandmother, 92 year old grandfather, and my other grandma is 92 as well. My parents, sister, brother, sister in law, mother in law, and father in law all live within a 5 mile radius of my house. I am having 4 Christmas celebrations between the 24th and 26th. My wife and I are both employed. Sure we have bills but I can't complain. I got my directv, xbox, computer, laptop, ipod, 2 cars, etc.

I am sitting here at my desk in utter deppresion over this. It really ruined my day and I really feel devastated....THIS IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS. I wrap my too much of my time and effort into this game. I am not doing this anymore. I need to worry about life and not the Buckeyes. Sure I'll tune in for games but the fact that I was letting this ruin my Christmas is ridiculous.

I will root for whomever is on the field and am not going to worry about all the other nonsense anymore.

This might be the worst rule the NCAA has. Once you give someone something its theirs. If they want to sell it, then thats their right. Someday i think they will seriously regret having sold their rings / gold pants, but to call that a violation worthy of suspension is pathetic.

It's the rule.

Agree with it or not, it's there for a reason and these players knew about it and willingly broke it.

I am really torn on this whole thing right now.

On one hand I am highly disappointed in these players for putting themselves and the team in this position.

On the other hand I am highly irked at the hypocrisy that the NCAA is showing here in light of the fact Reggie Bush never missed a game, and looks like Cam Newton will never miss a game.

Don't get me wrong. I think these guys should be punished for their actions, but, as with the Green case at the beginning of this year, I think the overall punishment is too harsh. Pay it back/to charity and 2 regular season game suspensions is ample punishment IMO.

The NCAA has become a fucking joke in my eyes.

Whatever.

Go Bucks! Beat Arkansas! (with or without said players):osu:

Well, whatever, there is probably a good reason for it, but 5 games is insane.

On a brighter note, the B10 Network is replaying the 2006 OSU - UM game...

agreed. after all, no can of worm would be opened if the ncaa permits student-athletes selling jerseys, rings, and whatever else. i mean, it's not as though boosters would use this market as a means to funnel thousands and thousands of dollars to key players. i mean, it's not as though boosters would promise recruits that they will get a ton of money for the future sale of their goods.

seems like a fine line. a pair of gold pants is worth nothing, a pair of gold pants given to TP that he sold you is worth a lot more. Once these kids start selling stuff and making money off of it because of their likeness is when the amateur status starts to disappear. I think that's the reason for the rules, no matter how silly they are.

I just want to make sure I understand: Mike Adams sold his gold pants and ring (allegedly) to help his parents. His parents that live in Dublin, Ohio.

OK, got it.

Life is tough on the hard-scrabble streets of Dublin, I'll tell you.

Here is what I can tell you about Mike Adams. During the time that these offenses took place, his mother was laid off, his father had a stroke and his cousin (was seriously like a sister) died. His family was seriously strapped and going through MAJOR turmoil. Mike, in his case, did what he felt he had to do.

JCOSU86, because someone lives in an affluent zip code doesn't mean that life is "Leave it to Beaver". Sweeping assumptions about why each player does what he does because of your perception of a suburb is idiotic.

To this point, I've been one of TP's biggest supporters, promoters and advocates to anyone who would listen.

This was the end of that.

Most of my opinion on the matter is directed at him, but goes for the other 4 as well. You do the crime, you do the time. No amount of hard work or restitution will be anywhere near enough to earn back my respect, regardless of the personal situations at hand. I can't expect Tressel to feel the same way, but he's in a position where he's almost not allowed to. These were knowing violations of the rules not gray areas where kids weren't sure one way or another. As much as I wish the best for ALL of these guys in the future, they've lost all credibility in the Scarlet & Gray for me. Odds are they will all be back, but next year has lost SO much of its luster for me it's heart-wrenching.

It doesn't excuse any of this, but just remember that all of this happened a while ago...not exactly recently. I can't say whether TP has actually matured or not (his Tweets suggest he hasn't matured as much as we'd like) but this is something he did as a sophomore.

AAaaaaaaannnd Mark May shows his A$$ again. He argues that if we were an SEC School, these 5 would not be allowed to play in the bowl... C'mon son!

Cam Newton is the most recent glaring example, but what about that LSU D Lineman who was suspended for the season until they made it to the SEC championship game and eventually played us in the 'ship... alluva sudden he can play?
