#4 Florida 86, #3 Ohio State 60 (Final)

Until tonight, UF was not the championship team it was in March. OSU somewhat embarrassed themselves tonight. However, they didn't give the game away, it was taken. UF looked to be clicking on all cylinders, for the first time this season.

I'm not happy. Everytime I go cheer against the gators, they win. Miserable.

I read up on this thread immediately after leaving the game, and here's my take on it all:

I'm not impressed with the crying about penalties on this forum. For four minutes (1st half 11:31 to 7:41) OSU had more penalties than UF. UF caught up and had more penalties called on them at 3:24 left in the first half, including Oden's stupidity with 6 seconds left. In the second half, the teams had even penalties from 19:51 to 16:48. OSU had more penalties for two minutes, until Florida took it over again at 14:21 until the end of the game. Grand total, Florida played with more penalties for 17 minutes of the game, OSU had more penalties for 6 minutes. (My math may be a little off, but it's close enough for horseshoes.)

Oden played well, but Coach Donovan's gameplan for Florida effectively removed him from the game. Every man that Oden guarded would step out and perform a pick, which also moved Oden out of the middle. Florida dominated inside with rebounds and points, and had 6 blocks to OSU's 5. Add to that the 50% 3 point shooting, and the rest of the OSU team has to step up.

Notes about the game from inside the O'Connell center:
I think the UF fans were shocked by the quantity of applause for OSU. The florida contingent of OSU fans represented well. We didn't have crap to cheer for in the second half after the first 80 seconds. UF fans may chant SEC all they want, but I ask you what conference has fans that allow so much scarlet in their arena? Including, I might add, a number of scarlet jerseys, shirts, etc. in The Rowdy Reptiles student section. Catch that in any of the Big Ten programs? I don't think so.

Just a little FYI, they are fouls in bball.

i'm left to assume that matta doesn't employ the zone because he wants the team to become much ("much" can be cubed here) better at man-to-man first. i can think of no other reason. the players find themselves out-of-position all the time, and a zone may successfully address these issues. a zone would keep oden at home, which is where he needs to be, and also place more players under the basket for the rebound. at this point of the season, the poor play on defense has cried out for the zone. i understand employing man as a rule if it's because matta sees the larger picture. it is this trust in matta that i hang my hat on.

Don't know if anyone noticed, but during the shot of Urban Meyer talking to someone in the crowd, you could make out that it was Cris Carter with whom he was chatting. Just a couple quick shots of his face...announcers didn't notice.

I'm not worried about the 8th. On the 8th, Ohio State will be able to hit Florida when they do it legally. You don't have that kind of leeway in Basketball...

I am....

Urban works the refs like no other coach in the country...

See last years game against Iowa. Worst officiated game ever.

Not to sound cocky, because I think it will be a good game, but I think that Florida will HAVE TO hold and grab and do whatever to stay in the game with Ohio State.

I think that is especially true if Chris Leak can't move the ball against Ohio State's offense.

Meyer can whine and moan all he wants against Ohio State on the football field, but I think the situations are entirely different.

Though the outcome of this game is disappointing, it is far from unexpected.

Florida came in as the reigning champs, carrying with them pretty much everyone from the championship team of March 2006.

Ohio State came in with a high ranking based largely on the promise of Oden and the rest of the Thad Five.

Florida showed why they won last year, and why they will play a significant role this year. Ohio State showed that a freshman heavy team has a good deal to learn. They have a season in which to do that if noise is what they wish to make in the NCAA tourney.

The Gators made a great case for grabbing the #3 or better ranking, Ohio State will drop, probably top 10, perhaps worse. Does it matter though, at this time in the season? No!

If this were football this game would have end-of-season written all over it. Basketball has a playoff (the type of crutch Meyer wants to borrow) and an early loss does not kill a season, it merely steels the team for later contests. Reminder, what was Florida's record at one point last year in the SEC - just before their tournament? 5-6, in an 11-game stretch. How did they finish? Hoisting the trophy.

This is not the end, it is not the beginning of the end, it is still very much the beginning for this team.

I officially hate Joakim Noah after watching that game... the announcers drool all over him and his energy and his playing to the crowd saying that he doesn't do it for attention, only to pump his team up. Yea.. that's why he's over on the side showboating, doing some hand gestures to the student section after and and-1. Best moment of the game was when Oden rejected his dunk and it hit him in the head and he looked around confused where the ball was.

He's insane...
