Wednesday, December 20, 2006

The trip to sunny Florida almost veered into a ditch before the Ohio State men?s basketball team left home. Fortunately for the No. 3-ranked Buckeyes, Mike Conley Jr. was driving the bus and kept them safely on track toward their showdown Saturday with the defending NCAA champion Gators.

COLUMBUS With all the talk about a showdown with defending national champion Florida on Saturday, No. 3 Ohio State seemed to forget it had another game to play.
Daequan Cook scored 21 points and Mike Conley Jr. led the way defensively to help the Buckeyes pull away down the stretch and beat Iowa State, 75-56, Tuesday night.

Overall the place was still pretty quiet tonite, but seemed like the fans were a little more anzier to clap a little more and yell alittle more while the game was going on.

They also proved that right now this is still a football town as loud as the place got when the footballl team came out. What a seen it was. The lets go bucks cheer was easily the loudest I have ever heard that place, and then when Smith held up his heisman and showed it off...What a scene to see.

I agree, it seemed like some in the crowd wanted to be polite to Iowa St. last night. :wink2: I was also at the game and found myself getting irritated with the crowd last night. The place was packed, and at times if I yelled loud enough Matta would have probably heard me (I was in section 324 BTW). I understand that it was a Tuesday night game, but I wish that our fans would start to get more rowdy for hoops games......there really isn't much of a home court advantage right now. Everyone is on the bandwagon, but it seems like some people are going to games just to say that they went to a OSU basketball game.......not because they necessarily wanted to participate. This fantastic basketball deserves a loud environment.

That was pretty neat to see the football team get their props.......but in the same token it was kind of sad that the only time the crowd was into the game was at halftime..........

I think the crowd noise is adversely affected by the acoustics of the arena, and I'm serious when I say that. I also think the noise perceptions are less if you are sitting in the 300s and 400s than in the lower bowl; it's noisier down low. (Which is where the players are, after all.)

During much of the 2nd half the crowd was pretty loud; most critical commentary I have heard about crowd noise comes from the peanut gallery. Note Thad Matta voiced his appreciation for the fan noise in his post-game comments to Paul Keels on the radio.

It did get loud from time to time, but mostly after the Bucks ran off 6 straight......or something like that. There just never seemed to be a time where everyone was standing up getting cheering.....except for halftime, and when the game ended. I guess my beef has less to do with noise, and more to do with participation.

The one major concern I have right now with this squad is Butler.....he played 22 minutes last night and did have 7 assists but 0 points, he needs to stay aggresive on the offensive end, we need his scoring. It seems like Butler and Lewis are still trying to find their shots with Oden on the floor......

Good to see Cook get back on track. Harris continues to play well.

I just got back from the game (I live in cincinnati). It seemed to that Oden's problem with the left thumb affected his game a lot. The slams looked good. The thumb seemed to bother him when he needed to put the ball on the floor to turn and shoot. I think he couldn't grip the ball as well with the bad thumb. Hopefully a few more days will see an improvement.

The thumb he had injured right before halftime and I do agree that it was affecting him. I doubt he will have the left hand wrapped for the Florida game, he might have just stubbed it. This also might be the first time we'll see Oden without the cast on coming up on Saturday!

I understand what you are saying, dps, but we really need the students to take the lead on that, and frankly they all act like they are on 'Ludes. My daughter, who went to Duke, commented on the lack of student involvement in the Schott, but said overall she thinks the game experience there is terrific.

(She had a kinda neat thought - when Greg reels off a rebound or block, she thinks we ought to do a "OD-EN" chant that borrows from the "OH-IO.")

I was in section 327 and yelling too. Not surprising, there were a significant number of empty seats in the lower bowl (PSL area). Needless to say the biggest cheer of the night was when Troy pulled "the Heisman Trophy out of the box and sat it on the table". Besides the football team, it was great to see Jerry Lucas and Terrence Dials too. The second biggest cheer may have been for Jerry Lucas.

FWIW, it was announced that the remainder of the home games are now officially "sold out".

I completely agree, the students need to take charge. I guess we need some inject some Red Bull into the arena.

Most of the students are gone for winter break. And I know that this isn't basketball, but if you notice every time a student tries to come up with something creative for the crowd at football games, its often met with limited support if any. I think thats probably why you don't see a whole lot of student support at bball games.
