2026 tOSU Offense Discussion

It's going to be interesting to see how Arthur Smith plans to keep the USC defense off balance. Hopefully we don't abandon the deep passing game all together but those plays always take time to develop. As always, our OL is going to be the key to our success on the field.
I'm no Arthur Smith but I'm sure the answer involves TEs

The main thing they really need to do from the start is utilize Fahey as a runner and make it clear that they will utilize him as a runner. The threat of a running QB can really help open up other things. He's not Braxton or anything but he is capable.

Just sayin': I'm guessing that the coaches will not want Fahey to do too much running as it would expose him to injury. Needless to say, the last thing we want is another QB out with a serious injury. If he does do any running he'll probably be instructed to slide feet first and/or get out of bounds before taking a bad hit. I really don' t think our QB3 (i.e. TSC) could pull off what "12-Gauge" did.

Think it's just a risk you got to take. Playing it too safe is probably going to cost you just as much as him getting hurt and having to play a 3rd QB.

So for the new QB, whoever it is, coming in...what does this offense do well and how can it help bring the new guy along?

What do we do well offensively? THTGDB.
-We are #1 in Yards per attempt (10.7) That's it. That is the identity. We get more out of every pass attempt than anyone else.
-Our success rate per drop back is 55.1%, good for 5th.
-Yards per completion also 5th, at 15.6 ypc

We do not throw it all that often surprisingly (45.86% which is 86th in CFB).
We do not protect the QB very well QB sack % is 6.61%, 82nd in the country
We do not protect the football particularly well; 1.1 giveaways per game, 56th in the country
We are not particularly well disciplined; 52 penalty yards per game, good for 50th in the country

And we can't run the ball for shit
-rushing success rate; 45%, 59th in the country
-yards per attempt: 4, good for 80th
-but we do try often 54.14%, 51st

This whole thing is built on an elite passing game that (even when healthy) gets shut down/severely degraded by teams that can pressure Sayin.

The rest of everything about the offense is middling to poor (50's down into the 80's).

A healthy Sayin throwing to 4 was covering up the ferocious mediocrity of the rest of the offensive side of the ball. Now we need the already mid or worse offense to help lift up the true freshman QB.

I hadn't realized just how bad the rest of it is to be honest. This is a fucking mess.

If they manage Luke against USC the same way (conservative) they managed Julian against Texas do we come out with a win?

You can be "conservative" when it comes to taking too many big risks, but you can't be "conservative" in the run up the middle, run up the middle, hope to hit a pass on 3rd down kind of way. They probably lose if they go that route.
