2025 tOSU Offense Discussion

As for the running backs, it appears that Donaldson is just a straight ahead runner. If he has a hole he can get some good yards. Peoples, wow what happened here. He seems stiff, with no ability/agility to make a move. Both of these guys tend to run in to the line where the hole was meant to be but have no vision otherwise. They both go down at first contact.

At least with Jackson, there’s some wiggle, speed and ability to make a guy miss. I love that he doesn’t go down easily and is always falling forward. I feel we would really be struggling in the run game if we didn’t have him.

0.02 cents worth of my limited opinion
Time for Caleb Downs to get snaps at RB.

I have not been impressed with the TE run blocking. Or Roberts out of the FB position. Sure seems to miss guys a lot. Those “successful” short yardage runs weren’t exactly inspiring. Some credit to Illinois filling gaps, shedding blocks and tackling…but still.

It makes it all the more maddening when they go 2 TEs and go nowhere. Square peg, round hole. And gives way too many flashbacks to gameplans vs that team up north.

Glad the LR guy saw that wasn’t a successful package.

I do agree it seems like the offense was almost playing with one hand tied behind their back. They seemed determined to establish the run.

I know Day has been harping on every player being a multitasker lately, but rosters are big enough that I'd love to see a dedicated short, thick, bowling ball fullback with a bad attitude getting use. I also wouldn't mind an undersized, superfast, surehanded jitterbug as a dedicated punt returner, but that's a discussion for another thread and time.

Stock Down

Leaning a Bit Too Much on the Run Game

Yes, it was a great win overall for Ohio State against Illinois. Playing ball control remains a sage strategy when the Buckeyes’ defense is dominating as it is. But there were 34 called runs against 28 called passes for an OSU squad that’s clearly been better throwing the ball thus far this year. Ohio State averaged a meager 2.9 yards per carry against the Illini. The run game does need to be solved for bigger games ahead, but it feels like quarterback Julian Sayin has earned more on his plate as well.

You would almost think they should start trying to run out of the spread more to keep the defense honest. It seems like when they play the heavy packages, we all know that its a run, and when they're spread wide a pass. Idk, it just seems to me that the threat of JJ and Carnell would force a defense on their heels and then you should attack with the ground game until they're forced closer to the LOS. This is just my amateur observation, and maybe that happens as the season progresses

This is the answer. Spread them out! Less guys in the box, more holes imo. Bring in the hogs in short yardage situations and down by the goal line. Otherwise we should be running the ball spread out with Smith, Tate, Innis, and Klare on the field. Use the pass to set up the run. More passes on first down.

Too many plays with 2, 3, and 4 tight ends.

Even the "block" Klare made on Smith's touchdown was basically him just being there. The defender blasted him and just as easily could've knocked him back into Smith. We've heard a lot about the TE room and coaching and Day's seemed to want to make a point of using them, but the product hasn't been impressive.
