Wanna make $14 the hard way?
A couple of thoughts on the letter and what it means......
1. It was written and presented to the COI back in June. Why did it just become news now? B1G media days start today......Seems like scUM just leaked this now to try to avoid any uncomfortable or awkward questions....
2. The entire letter wasn't released, just a summary from "sources". Wetzel wrote the article but didn't even read the letter himself....We all know how easy it would be for those sources to pick and choose phrases and parse them together to make it sound however they want.
3. Petitti's job is to advocate for the B1G and its member schools. scUM, like it or not, is one of the B1G's cash generators. Back when Tennessee was getting their hammer, the SEC commissioner was actively defending them. Didn't affect the COI's decision.
4. If memory serves, Petitti came to B1G from Fox, who now (essentially) owns the B1G. Fox just hired the biggest scUM fanboy on the planet (Portnoy). It wouldn't be out of the question for Fox to be urging Petitti to advocate for scUM behind the scenes.
5. The NCAA and COI do not have to give (and probably wouldn't give) any consideration to Petitti (or anyone else who might offer an opinion) when considering sanctions

Too soon old, too late smart
Interesting take. Yeah, believe Xichigan is looking around to see who they can get to advocate for them, and yeah, the B10 Commissioner is supposed to advocate for his teams, however, does he realize that he's actually advocating against the rest of the B10 by trying to minimize the impact on TSUN for cheating? Don't really know how well Fox does when Xichigan is on the tube, versus tOSU, Oregon etc, but advertising pays the bills. Also, the Court of Public Opinion pretty much condemns Xichigan for what they did, but don't see any path that would include taking away the championship they won, nor keeping them out of the BCS playoffs. The longer this takes, seems like a lesser punishment will occur. Truly disappointing.

Presumably the conference got $$$ as a result of scUM's tainted title? Plus you have the reputation hit to the conference as a whole.

This notion that Michigan is too big to punish is nonsense. They were complete garbage for almost 20 years. The B1G is more prosperous than ever. HoW oN eArTh DiD tHeY mAnAgE tHaT?

I know it "feels" like this is taking forever but the reality is that it's moving quite quickly in " NCAA time" especially when the NOA was amended last fall which gave TCUN additional time to reply. As for announcing penalties, the COI usually takes 30-90 days after the hearing to do that and we are barely halfway there. I wouldn't be surprised if the announcement comes shortly after B1G media days.

Regardless of whether they would have to give it back or not, the B1G has an interest in minimizing the fallout.

What happened to my ¤cash?
I have to believe that this is a lot like parents who are pissed at their kid who did some stupid shit. You still have to take care of them… and advocate for them for their best… but you can still be super pissed behind closed doors.
Like it or not, the guy has a job and that is to advocate for the entirety of the B1G as best he can. I don’t doubt the strong words that are happening behind closed doors. While we may want to hear about all of the dirty laundry, advocating for the conference would preclude us hearing those details in the open.

The interesting thing about this situation is that once the COI decision is reached and the NOA becomes public we'll all know how totally fucked up was the SCUM scam. Tony's letter is going to look worse in retrospect.
