2024 tOSU Offense Discussion

Maybe I’m just old school but if they ran the T formation that could throw the PSU of for a little bit then you have the choice of three backs to hand off to and QB sneaks
But that ignores all of the WR talent that's been accumulated. Need a more balanced scheme.

I think the OL did a decent job. Jackson is a suitable OT, he just happened to be facing one of the best DEs in the B1G. But when it counted, he and the OL stepped up and cleared the way for the running game. Kudos

I don't think we ran much read option before this game? I think that was the difference running, we got an extra blocker schematically.
It wasn't even an extra blocker.

They ran it away from the trips side, and for some reason Ped State's defensive scheme put the linebacker head up on the tackle and the end outside of the tackle, so the tackle released forward and hook blocked the linebacker, which then gave Howard and easy pitch to the back.

It was a great scheme play and one I hope they keep using every now and again when the defensive ends are crashing up field super hard.

The Ohio State football team has found its best offensive line combination

After eight games, the Ohio State football team has finally found the best offensive line combination they can put together.

No unit on the field took more criticism in the last week than the Ohio State football team's offensive line. They were shredded after their performance against Nebraska at home, and for good reason. They just didn't have any push in the running game and Will Howard didn't have a lot of time to throw.

Backup left tackle Zen Michalski was hurt in that game and wasn't available for the Penn State game. It actually ended up working out because Donovan Jackson slid out to left tackle and was a much better option, even though he wasn't great in certain moments. He did allow a couple of sacks.

Carson Hinzman got his first start of the season after starting all of last year at center. He was put at left guard and actually played pretty well. After eight games, it seems the Buckeyes have finally found the best offensive line combination for them: Jackson, Hinzman, McLaughlin, Tshabola, and Fryar.

The Ohio State football team's offensive line did a really good job vs. Penn State

After running for just 2.1 yards per carry against the Cornhuskers, Ohio State ran for 4.7 yards per carry, good enough for 179 yards. The line got better as the game went along too. Their best drive was the final one of the game. Ohio State just ran it down Penn State's throat to seal the game.

Starting the drive at their own one-yard line, the Buckeyes ran the final 5:15 off the clock thanks to their running game. The offensive line wore down the Nittany Lions and that showed a level of toughness we haven't seen from that unit at any point this season.

This is the offensive line combination we should see for the rest of the season. Obviously, it would be better if they still had Josh Simmons. But this is the best lineup for them moving forward. That final drive of the game confirms that.

Not sure if it’s been brought up, but one upside to the new offensive line arrangement is the ability to get leverage in the run game.

Everyone remembers the year we started started NPF, Paris Johnson, Wypler, Munford, Dawand Jones…..

Our pass protection was elite but ability to run ball was inconsistent throughout the year…..we couldn’t get the push needed with (4) OT’s trying to play at a low pad level.

I think what we saw Saturday, and hopefully rest of the year, if we can stay healthy is the inverse of that. With Jackson at OT, Hinzman at OG, with Tshabola, and then Fryar playing OT who is a natural guard as well….with McCglaughlin at Center….

Well we basically have (5) bowling balls across the offensive line. Pass blocking will be iffy at times but hopefully through chipping we RB’s and TE’s we can support it as needed…..it was awesome to finally see the O-line get a consistent push and create some run lanes. Personally, I’d rather have a nasty run game than elite pass blocking. It’s not perfect, but Hinzman being an anchor at guard might be the breakthrough this team needed.

If this is their best OL combo, they simply won’t be able to take advantage of the WR core. DJ was barely getting a hand on Carter on any drop back. Not DJ’s fault btw. Even the simplest of short crossers (the Innis TD comes to mind), Carter was in the backfield in a nano second. I mean, there is a reason he got a 0.0 PFF grade in pass pro on Saturday. They are going to have to continue to lineup in those closed splits with Judkins behind Howard and grind the opponent into dust.

They need to run to set up the pass and that’s OK…..we’re so used to elite passing teams and a different mindset when it comes to throwing the ball.

You’re correct about pass protection…..the best thing we can do to help the offensive line is grind teams out early with the run to set up play action.

Every team in the country has significant injuries at this point….its how you adjust. We need to become a more reliant run team and lean into the fact we’re starting (5) interior offensive lineman….make what should be a weakness, a strength. Bully teams on the ground…..

Yeah, play action passes will be the passing game the rest of the way, IMO. And quick outs and slants.
But isn't this something that's Kelly's calling card while at Oregon? I don't remember him having massive, elite OL, but quick strike offenses, and creative ways to run the ball.

Use our TEs, either on that side or pulling to that side. H-back them. We don't need them catching regularly We need them blocking routinely.

Parenthetically, I love Henderson as a blocker. He's not as built for it as Judkins, but it seems that his technique is better and they're both better than a lot of the bigger backs we've had.

To protect Howard some I'd love to see a few direct snaps to Henderson or Judkins with other lined up at RB next to them.....I would NOT have them make any zone reads, but would certainly have some set plays designed to utilize their speed and physicality and take some hits away from Howard. In that case you can absolutely use Tre as a lead blocker....or decoy. Lotta options.....
