2024 tOSU Offense Discussion

Day just said if Zen can play, he will start lol
I don't want Zen hurt, but we've pretty much seen enough to know that is a disaster waiting to happen...he's in what, his fifth year here? Long enough that if he looks like he has and that is the best we've got to replace Simmons, we should all be very concerned.

Stick with Jackson at LT for now...hell, it probably helps his draft stock to show the versatility even though it is not his natural position. I will admit looking through the roster that I don't see many feasible alternatives other than Jackson or Zen, so we just have to acknowledge that Simmons was a huge loss and there will likely be a noticeable downgrade there...but we have to scheme around that loss and not pout over an injury. As to LG, Montgomery needs to shine although I'm not sure why Siereveld wasn't out there after looking very, very good when Jackson was out.

Makes more sense to me to run Ian Moore out there to let him take his lumps. Although he might not be able to execute run plays well enough this early.

Where would you put Moore at? Not saying he isn't an option, but at LT or LG? In my mind Siereveld looked great at LG and Montgomery was a prized recruit that should have the potential to step in. So in my mind, a combination of Jackson/Siereveld/Montgomery makes the most sense to me on the left side. Moore hasn't hit the field yet that I am aware of, so for this game I would prefer somewhat known commodities.

LT, as I thought he was going to end up there. It would be odd to throw him out there having not played at all, just hard to think anyone will be much worse than Zen. And I give him props for doing his best in a bad situation. He had some good reps too against a good defense. The whole OL was off, and I'm wondering how much time they got to spend as one unit instead of trying out 2-3 different lineups to figure things out.

Nothing seems like a good option at this point. Jackson makes sense as the emergency option, but it's gotta be really difficult to transition to LT after 3.5 years of playing guard. Siereveld has impressed me more than not so I think he could work well at LG given a week to practice there. No idea about Montgomery as I can't remember him playing much.

I still think that most of the struggles Saturday were stubbornly working on the basics with a new line. But the result was obviously discouraging.

To start, I agree we are dealing with a difficult situation on the OL and no option should be ruled out if it could work. I know Jackson is playing out of position in my scenario, but I just want a known commodity at the position under the circumstances. And Siereveld has shown real promise and Montgomery can also fill in.

But we may be discussing rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic at the specific position, though the trickle down effect cannot be discounted. It's time for Frye and Kelly to earn their money to adjust though. Maybe it's a player problem, but good coaches overcome them.

What I’m hoping for is we just get the ball to our best players and let them win us the games. None of the “we want balance” or the “we need to run the ball” just do what’s available.

Last game we should’ve just taken the queue that this is a throwing the ball game and we should’ve done that all day until Nebraska stopped it (because they didn’t).

I think we need to force feed Jeremiah Smith until teams call mercy and cover him with 2/3 players. That dude should have 8-10 targets a game because it’s likely he’s coming down with 6-8 of them for 100+. Then we need to also include Egbuka, Henderson and Judkins.

If Penn States going to give us the run game? Then great. If they’re going to drop into the box then let Howard utilize our skill out wide.

A touchdown is a touchdown. Hopefully we just roll with what’s working.

Interesting analysis by Kyle Jones. Go to 19:40 to see a stark example of an OSU offensive play failing because of a simple mental error on the O-line. This may be a cause for partial optimism - if the failures on the O-line tend to be mental errors, rather than physical limitations, and I think a lot of them are, there's more room for improvement. You can fix a guy not knowing what he's doing all the time much more readily than you can fix a guy being physically limited.

We are not mentally sharp yet …Why? It’s spring fall half the season.

I didn't go back and look at the OL play, so this is insightful. I am with you that missed assignments can be fixed and physical limitations cannot be fixed, so hopefully it is a teaching moment and not what our OL is capable of. Even with Simmons out, we have the pieces for what should be at least a functional OL if we can figure out where those pieces go. Problem is we have to figure that out quickly, i.e. before Saturday.

Watching the film analysis and re-watching the game itself, I think Tshabola came off 10x worse than Zen. Zen got better later on and a lot of his mistakes seem like things that you would reasonably expect from someone seeing real play for the first time.

Tegra was very very bad for someone who has played as many games as he has at this point.

Given all the criticism of our DL play, wonder if the lack of twists, stunts, etc has had a debilitating effect on the OL? If you cannot practice against it, how do you prepare for it? Anyway, most all of tOSU's OL comes from schools without much of a passing game, no? Or at least that seems to be the theme when they are recruited. So why are we struggling to open holes for the RBs? Someone above mentioned Hinzman. Where is he? As a last year starter, was touted as a second team guard/center, but someone else gets the call when a starter goes down? Other names surfaced as starter candidates, but then nothing. To me at least, this seems a tad weird. And am not looking forward to Will 'taking off' on QB runs. If he gets hurt, the good ship tOSU is sunk. There's no Kenny Guiton sitting back there. The #2 QB (Brown) hasn't shown (me at least) enough to alleviate my fears. Sayin (#3 QB) is still relatively untested, so no telling how he'll react if thrown into the deep end. Keep remembering the Missouri debacle, and hope there has been improvements made. Amazing how all the optimism has waned from the start of the season. Hopefully tOSU will muddle through. Still highly optimistic that the Buckeyes will beat Xichigan. go Bucks!
