2024 tOSU Offense Discussion

Ryan Day is giving clues for the right guard starter for the Ohio State football team

The Ohio State football program doesn't have all of the starters on the offensive line figured out yet. Ryan Day might be giving clues as to who might start at right guard.

While Ohio State fans have been wondering all through the off-season who will be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback, they have been absolutely fretting over the situation at right guard. Who will be the starter? Is there a leader or even a viable candidate? Ryan Day’s comments in the last ten days or so might give us a bit of insight. This is what he said early last week,

"Carson Hinzman and Seth (McLaughlin) they both can swing between center and guard, but then Tegra Tshabola is another guy that has stepped up and had another good summer."
- Ryan Day
But when Day was asked about Tshabola after the team’s first workout of camp, he said the redshirt sophomore needs to show he knows what he’s doing and can do it consistently. This tells me Hinzman and McLaughlin are clear leaders as camp begins.

Luke Montgomery is another name Day mentioned last week, but I think it is obvious he has a lot of ground to make up if he’s going to win the position. Although he drew rave reviews from the OSU defensive linemen he faced in spring practice, Montgomery seemed to steadily slide down the depth chart.

If the opener against Akron was being played tomorrow, I’d say the more experienced McLaughlin (24 career starts at Alabama before transferring to the Buckeyes) would be at center, and Hinzman, last year’s starter at center, would be the starter at right guard.

Just sayin': Well, time will tell. Besides making both players better, the other good thing about a tight competition for any position is that the loser is a very solid backup. There isn't much of a drop off if the 2nd string player has to play.

Was thinking a bit on this team and what I hope we utilize is a variety of formations. This team has the ability if you think about it to go 3 TEs if we have to but we can go 5 wide if we have to. We have the depth and the talent at every position to utilize every formation to keep teams off balance.

There isn’t a weak unit on offense and I really hope we use a ton of different looks formation wise to keep teams on their toes all year. The hell with saving things for Oregon etc. I say do the opposite.

Give them so much to think about that they can’t focus on one particular thing. Seriously the first 5 weeks we could throw in the wing T and still win by 7 touchdowns. So why not do it? I really hope we try to be a bit more creative with our formations and our packages.

Just watched the QB videos and I’m buying Howard as the guy this year with Sayin as a multi-year starter. I also really liked the CK video. LOVE that he’s with us.
I am really excited to see Howard, I watched him a decent bit at KSU and was very impressed with him. He is only going to get better with CK coaching him and a huge talent upgrade pretty much everywhere across the board. Huge plus that he seems like a natural leader and team player. Really excited to see this offense...they don't have to put up 50 a game with our defense, but I do think we will be improved on this side of the ball.

THE BLIND SIDE. Chip Kelly sees potential in Ohio State’s offensive line.

“I see the makings of a really good unit,” he said Tuesday. “That whole group worked extremely hard with (strength coach) Mick (Marotti) in the summertime. (With) where they are physically, they came to camp ready to play and ready to compete.”

If the offensive line is to become a “really good unit,” Ohio State will, of course, need Seth McLaughlin to be at his best at center and either Carson Hinzman or Tegra Tshabola to be at their best at right guard. However, it will also need returning starters Josh Simmons, Donovan Jackson and Josh Fryar to elevate their performance after an inconsistent 2023 season.

Last week, Day specifically named Simmons as a lineman he wants to see more from this fall.

“Josh Simmons can do some things that most can’t,” Day said. “He’s very, very skilled and talented. We feel like the offseason was a difference-maker for him. But time will tell, like with a lot of these guys. But I think he’s positioned himself with a good summer and to be the best version of himself.”

“We've been mixing it up a little bit, but you're starting to see he and Devin get a little bit more lion's share of the reps with the ones,” Day said when asked if Howard had emerged as the frontrunner to start at quarterback. “I will say that he's taken command of the huddle at the line of scrimmage. I think he's much more confident out there.

“No decisions have been made. We're going to probably scrimmage a little bit on Saturday. By then, we'll take an evaluation and kind of see where we're at. But both guys are getting reps with the ones.

“I will say that Will really has taken some strides here in the last couple of practices, taking control of the offense, making plays on third down. Again, hasn't won the job, but we have seen some positive play there.”

Day believes Howard has shown “a total command of the offense” in the Buckeyes’ first seven practices of camp while he’s also gotten in better shape physically since the spring, slimming down from 249 pounds to a range of 233-235 pounds.

“He's put some work in, I think, this summer, not only on his body – and by the way, I think it was 2% body fat that he changed – and so that part was big, but also just understanding of the offense,” Day said. “He's worked on his throwing mechanics. But if you just said, give me the one thing that looks different this preseason, it's his command of the offense, the way that he's making decisions, and his movement.”
