2024 tOSU Offense Discussion

Will Howard is about to watch his draft stock go through the roof. All he has to do is make very few mistakes and he'll probably be in New York also at the end. Man alive what a freaking run we're having at QB
We’ve had great QB play since basically Troy. Even the year with Boeckman he was really strong in 2007.

The strength of Will is his ability to climb the pocket and keep plays alive. I guess he’s been tremendous with limiting turnovers in camp too.

“I mean – yeah,” Jackson said, the media contingent laughing at the long, emphatic pauses between his words. “I had to swallow my words there. But yeah. What’s been said in our room doesn’t have to be said out here. We understand the narrative. We understand what some of y’all think of us and we’ve just got to execute, man. You (the media) only report what you see on the field, so if we want to change that narrative, we’ve got to change what we put on the field. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

Ryan Day wants the Ohio State football team to start faster

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Ryan Day mentioned that the Ohio State football team needs to start faster than they did against Akron.

The Ohio State football team didn't have the best start on Saturday against Akron. In fact, they found themselves trailing 3-0 early in the game. They only scored seven points on their first three drives of the game. That was not expected going against a MAC team with all of the talent that they have.

Of course, the Buckeyes would go on to win the game 52-6 so it's not like they were in any real trouble. Still, it would be nice to get off to faster starts, especially against inferior teams. Ryan Day even mentioned that during his press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Day mentioned that there were a couple of things that he didn't like. One of those is the slow start. Ohio State should be able to get off to faster starts against teams with lesser talent. Akron would certainly fall into that category, as would Western Michigan this weekend.

I'm sure Day will make it a point of emphasis during practice this week to get the offense firing on all cylinders sooner into the game. That wasn't the only thing he didn't like though. He also didn't like the first kickoff that the Buckeyes had. He thought there was more room for yards.

Day did like what Brandon Inniss did with his punt returns. It seems like he has rejuvenated something that has been bad for the last few years. It's almost like Parker Fleming didn't do anything while he was on staff and deserved to be let go. The special teams were much better without him.

They missed one play on the opening drive, an interesting inside screen. If Smith catches that ball he was going a long way, might have housed it. He looked great after that, but the Miss stopped the drive. On the other hand, the run blocking still sucks. Woody would have a fit.

With Better Collective Run Blocking, Ohio State Feels It's Close to A Fearsome Ground Attack

“There were a lot of plays that were one block away from being huge runs, and we just got to keep working on correcting those one-offs.”– Seth McLaughlin

It’s too early to provide a definitive answer on whether Ohio State’s offensive line will be of the caliber it needs to win a national championship in 2024.

That’d be true regardless of what happened and against who in Week 1, but it’s especially true when anchor left guard Donovan Jackson missed the first game of the Buckeyes’ season against Akron.

That said, it provided early insight into what the Buckeyes will need to improve upon as they embark on an all-in campaign. One of the top areas of concern is run blocking.

“There were good snaps. There were some plays that we got to the perimeter, we didn't quite make that guy miss a couple of times,” Ryan Day said on Tuesday. “There were some other times where – there was one in particular into the boundary, (a lineman) pulled around, we didn't quite identify the backer that we had. There were a handful of things there.

“So yeah, we're looking to be more explosive and everybody's got to own it. Everyone's got to be a part of it. There were some good things as the game went on, but we've gotta see more improvement in Week 2.”

Taking an honest look at things, Ohio State didn’t block poorly on the whole against the Zips.

There were no sacks allowed, even if Will Howard had to escape pressure a few times. There were no tackles for loss by Akron, even if things didn’t go perfectly on the ground. Ultimately, Ohio State did manage 170 rushing yards on 5.2 yards per carry, which is decent, and Akron quietly finished with the nation's No. 52 rush defense in terms of yards per carry in 2023.

It’s simply the consistency that needs to improve. TreVeyon Henderson gashed Akron for a 9-yard gain on the Buckeyes’ first run of the season, but then on Ohio State’s second drive, it could only scrounge up 12 yards in six carries. All told, the Buckeyes picked up just 4.8 yards per attempt in the first half.

“I'm not sure how many rushing yards we ended up rushing for, but there's always yards that are left out there,” center Seth McLaughlin said. “There were a lot of plays that were one block away from being huge runs, and we just got to keep working on correcting those one-offs.”

I’m actually very excited for the offense and especially the play calling after 2 games. The difference is very stark IMO when you compare Chip to Ryan Day.

Chip has incorporated a ton of different schemes and ways we do things. He utilizes a ton of different kinds of run plays which is great. Maybe the best thing Chip has brought is he’ll often pull guards one way but then runs a play the opposite way. Such a mind fuck for a defense trying to read keys.

There’s just so many weapons on this offense though. Legitimately I think we have the best RB room and the best WR room. Then with the way the OL built off week 1 I think they can be a top unit by years end.

For example, watching Texas vs TCUN who widely is viewed as the best OL I couldn’t help but think they were exceptionally slow. Is it me or can our OL really run? They seem to really get out there quick when they pull.

Overall, as you all may have guessed by now I’m pretty impressed. Game 1 we couldn’t been better up front but after rewatching that game it was also more about not finishing drives early. If JJ doesn’t drop the ball the first drive I think we come away from that Akron game feeling different (especially myself).

Very excited though with how Chip calls plays and the rhythm he has. I’m very exited to see what this offense can do vs Iowa.

Also, McLaughlin is such an underrated pick up. Arguably could be our most important transfer. Watch this clip below as an example but also watch the first TD from Saturday. He drove his guy into the end zone is who Trey ran right behind for the score. What’s fun about this clip is that this is stretch to the boundary but because it’s ran correctly with a read option to the field it gives Q the time he needs to find the seam since the defense has to be sure Howard hasn’t kept.

The most impressive thing to me is the number of different looks they've shown already.

How many times over the years have we heard that they have to simplify the playbook and focus on what the team does well? This team has mastered a variety of techniques and performs them all well, at least against the teams they've played so far. With the way the competition ramps up game by game; two games in I am as confident as ever that this team can be one of the best of all time.

Yes that’s what I’m saying too… just so many different looks from just the OL let alone the formations etc.

There’s just this feeling of “who is going to break this play out this time”. Seriously could be anyone of 10+ players and there’s just so much available.

Seriously all run schemes are available which I think has opened everything up.
