2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

Great victory against Purdue. But the Jack experiment was a major fail.

It was actually a really interesting Defense to watch at the very least. Looked like it was gonna work well a few times, only for someone to miss a tackle. You could see schematically what the defense was trying to do, very non traditional, but interesting nonetheless.

Good seeing Houston stepping up and getting playing time. Bone headed move on the personal foul but he and KMac make for solid replacements for Williams and Hamilton. Providing depth against Indy and the Cheaters will come in handy.
Couldn't have said it better, Eddrick will get a hard love lesson there but glad it came in a blowout game. He is coming along and he could be a big contributor moving forward. KMac as well, especially against heavy run teams. Both are looking like the players I thought we were getting when I followed them as recruits.

I’d like to see more from the package. First, the starters were out for the most part in the front 7. Second they did the same thing every single play when they would shift Milton late to rush off the edge. I was waiting for Milton to rush inside once but that never happened.

Lots of options there and I bet they’re going to do something out of that formation that gets our attention in a good way.

There's really no long term determination you could make from the Jack experiment. If anything, I thought it was successful at getting pressures. The issues were second level tackles and not the execution of the front line on those plays.

They were also running it with backups. If you ran that 3 down front with Sawyer/Tyleik/JT and then Melton coming off the end, that's going to look drastically different than what we got against Purdue.

Despite giving up two long drives at the start of the contest in Wrigley, the Buckeyes snuck past Army in scoring defense.

10.30 ppg tOSU
10.33 ppg Army
11.40 ppg Notre Dame
11.90 ppg Texas

The Longhorns limited Arkansas enough to take the lead in total defense.

249.0 ypg Texas
250.8 ypg tOSU
255.5 ypg Indiana
272.6 ypg Penn St
273.9 ypg Army

Who would’ve thought though that our corners are the weakness of the defense?

I don't think they're a weakness, just not the strength we thought they'd be. LBs are still the #1 concern, although we'll see if Styles can take this production against bad teams and use it to be more confident and productive in big games. Glad they're using him on blitzes more and more.

Can't say anything we've seen with Igbinosun is surprising. He's always been too grabby and not the greatest cover corner, but is good much more often than not and is a very willing run defender. Not sure what the issue is with Burke. Even Matthews seems to have regressed a bit.

Defense overall has been weird this year. Maybe they've tried to do too much behind the scenes and it's made it difficult for the players to get comfortable, especially in the back 7. They started out vanilla, but since Oregon have used different types of coverage, blitzes, and even a different alignment with a Jack against Purdue. Can't imagine they installed much of this in the middle of the season, so it's a lot of things to keep in mind even for a bunch of seniors. Here's hoping they'll pare down the playbook next season and focus on more of what worked in the backhalf of this season.

I think the linebackers have played better than the corners. I don’t think either are really a weakness but I think the linebackers have improved all year where as the corners really haven’t at all. What I notice from the corners is a lack of big plays (minus IGB vs Penn State). Where are the PBUs? Where are the impact plays? I’m not seeing that from the corners.
