It sucks that this is the standard... but the standard is the standard.

Only here at OSU can a coach lose 6 games in 4 years, make the playoffs 3 of 4 years and basically win every game by 10+ points (other than his 6 loses) yet still we have a ton saying he's not the guy.

I don't think anyone is giving Ryan enough credit for quickly getting rid of the defensive staff before 2019 and again in 2022. Did he make bad hires in 2020? Yep he did but he basically pulled the plug after 8 games.

I will say this... I don't like the special teams coach hire. That's stupid and this team would benefit much more by having James coach the LBs full time.

Also, he's 1-2 vs ttun... he's got to win this year or there's going to be a ton of rumblings to get him out. Personally I think that'd be stupid but I'd understand if that happened.

Any rate... totally agree that Studwara really hurt us by missing on so many prime candidates. I have a feeling this year is going to be a struggle vs good teams because of it.

Agree with your whole post!

I was out with some family friends(mainly my wife's) who happen to also be OSU fans. They went to The Game last year as it was their daughter's senior year and be her last game as an undergrad. He said the loss tore him up so much that he doesn't see OSU losing any less than 4-5 losses and doesn't want to "waste" his money going to anymore games. I was left kind of speechless, and soon had to remind him of Day's record and the fact that OSU was still a FG away from the NC. And beating TCU handily if they made it. He wasn't sold, and thought Day should be replaced. I don't get this line of thinking by fans either. But I guess that's why fan is short for fanatic

From the Rivals article above:

… eleven of his 16 penalties were false starts

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen often enough during games so Simmons isn’t compared to another OT whose name also had 2 syllables, and the first one began and the second one ended with an ‘S’. 8D

Almost 15 years later, and there is still PTSD from his penalties.

There is zero to worry about. It was the initials-as-a-first-name that was at fault for the false starts… and the PTSD is just spill over from that… as I reach for my Xanax.

I've got to admit.

A week later with the addition of Simmons I feel okay about the OL right now. I've come to realize that there's not many teams that have the DL to hurt us nor will any team have the corners to cover our skill. It'll take a team with either a dominant front 4 or a very good total defense to match up with our offense.

Against a team with a bad DL and bad secondary it wont matter.

With a team having a great DL but poor secondary it won't matter because we'll get open pretty quick.

Against a team with a poor DL but great secondary we'll have all day to throw.

It literally will take a great DL and Secondary to potentially hurt us. To me that leaves maybe ttun and that's about it.

Notre Dame lost everyone up front, Wisconsin lost a combo of guys, Penn State lost their best front guy and Secondary players, and even ttun lost a ton up front and their best 2 secondary.

So in short- don't fuck it up QBs.

Good take. I’m optimistic that with our skill position strength (the best in all CFB), a serviceable to good OL will emerge and the Ryan Day show offense will help McCord settle in. I am more optimistic than others on McCord. If he doesn’t force balls and is a good distributor with high football IQ we’re absolutely golden. We don’t need CJ Stroud level accuracy and arm strength. I believe he’s more willing to pickup the sticks with his serviceable mobility. That’s more than enough to make a real run. See Georgia 21-23.

It’s all going to come down to our trip up north. That is the bar. I’m actually very bullish our D will take a step forward this year. I 100% expect a legit top 10 defense. I am not concerned about the offense shredding everyone on the schedule but TTUN. We’ll see if Day has what it takes in the rivalry. Do we have the mental strength, do we play loose, do we have the ability to make adjustments when things aren’t working in the game. We have the talent. Will be another fun season with a shot at the whole enchilada. We were a first down and kick away from Ohio state championship swag in 22. We have a strong schedule so one slip up won’t hurt so long as it’s not TTUN. I don’t see them losing until our matchup and we can’t bank on a repeat of two B1G teams in the final four like last year.

Looking forward to another year guys. I will be at both the IU and NoD games and all the home games. Great to be a buckeye! I named my daughter Scarlett but she’s yet to see a championship. Why not 2023 before the expansion. Feels like destiny to me. Won the first and will win the last before expansion…

I'm with you on the defense. I hate to say it but losing our seniors this year was something we needed. The front 4 finally is what it should've been last year with 44, 51, 91 and 33 (all 4 have been mocked in the first round). The LBs are both back and 35 will be an All American. The secondary lost two undrafted players but plugs in with Sonny Styles and Jordan Hancock (again two players who will be high end draft picks).

Thank you to those kids last year for representing OSU well for 4-5 years but having 5 players (6, 14, 15, 26, 86) go undrafted with 1 being a late pick (9) that's not anywhere close to what the kids this year will show.

We were a top 2 defense roughly 3/4th the way through the year even with it being the first year of the defense and with half the defense probably not being as good as their back ups. You're right on to expect a top 10 defense and personally we should be a top 5 defense after the year too (including all our tough games).

Don't forget about Igbinosin(sp?), the guy is a baller. He's one of the most focused players I've seen on the entire team, and can tell from every rep that his transfer to OSU was a pure business decision. And I think his mentality has rubbed off on Burke, who yes was injured last year. But I still stand by the fact that I believe that Burke let his ego get in the way last year's off season after his stellar frosh season. He had pros shouting him out on social media, and sorry but I can't see how a 19-20yo wouldn't let that get to his head. I think DI has helped get Burke focused on his craft again, and could make OSU's CB trio one of the best in CFB. And let's not forget that Brown is also very talented and should see PT as well. I really like this secondary, especially if Knowles sticks by his early off season comments about using CBs in the slot, and not relying strictly on Safeties.

I'm highly confident the o-line and QB situations will be worked out by the time it matters. No matter what happens in South Bend, if you win games 7, 8, and 12, you're going to Indianapolis to play for a B1G title and playoff berth. That's 29 camp practices, and 8 weeks of in season practice to figure it out.

I also feel pretty good that McCord will look better when his top 4 WRs and top 2 RBs are full speed. If he doesn't, Brown will.

Couldn't agree more. Birm had an interesting question on a recent podcast wondering if their lack of competitive fire in the pre-draft process was reflective of the late November failings the past two years.

Even this years team, outside a few positions (LB comes immediately to mind, TE and maybe S as well), should be driven by the 2nd and 3rd year guys.

Yeah the performance of the non first rounders was pretty disappointing.

Just odd things like Harrison not testing, Hickman not testing, Jones not testing at the OSU pro day, and Brown running slower than most linebackers was underwhelming to say the least.
