My biggest concern is a young QB turning the ball over. Secondarily is the OL that might get him sped up and make that bad habit worse.

Turnovers will negate a talent advantage quicker than anything
No doubt and that's why we'd be pretty stupid to not go 2019 on this year. Lean on the run, hit some high percentage throws and then when the time is right take a shot with play action.

In 2019 from the stats I saw we were running the ball 47 times per game and throwing about 28 times per game. That's the game plan that helps a first year starter. Mind you in 2019, Fields had no where near the reps or the surrounding skill players that McCord will have. That's not even including McCord being in year 3 of the system where as Fields had 6 months?

If we come out throwing 50 times a game that's a mistake.

Yep. Hopefully the coaches recognize this and don't come out trying to sling it like Stroud is still out there.

VERY true! And that's also my biggest concern. But McCord(assuming he's the starter) isn't a very young QB. 3rd year in the program, played in 12 games and started 1(I know Akron isn't ND or even NW but its still a D1 program).
Like @Captain Buckeye said, if OSU can use a good run game to set up the play action then the offense will see success

To me that pass/run balance comes down to the strengths of the OL. With the WR/TE unit we have, you can't waste it and McCord or Brown are plenty good enough to get them the ball...if they get pass protection from the OL. But Henderson and Williams (and Hayden as we found out) are also very talented and need touches. I think the skill position players would make it hard to argue distribution of the ball if we had the OL back that we did last year.

On the OL, I'm not necessarily down and out on the unit, it could be good but there are just a bunch of question marks outside Jones and Jackson. However, there is going to be some level of downgrade, at least to start. You just hope the difference is minimal enough to give our skill position players a chance to make plays.

That said, we will not throw the ball as much as we did with CJ last year in most games, pretty confident in predicting that...loved McCord's film in HS, but nobody should expect him to be as productive as Stroud was last season. But I don't think he needs to be if we have a strong enough run game.

Then again Day has never had a QB that's been just good... they've all been great and generally in a short amount of time.

You have to figure with all the weapons playing and all the experience McCord is in a much better spot than Haskins, Fields or Stroud going into his first season.

I personally think our defense is the best he'll see all year too (difference makers in the secondary now) and that includes the playoffs if we are lucky enough to get back. So McCord will also be well prepared too.

No doubt that McCord will be well prepared. I throw the spring game out. I know there were struggles but you gotta remember it's still early in him taking over as being the guy and our defense is quite a bit better than most defenses he will face this season. (same goes with the OL, they aren't gonna face many DLs with as much talent as ours)

Going against a good defense, without the OL he'll play behind and also missing nearly every WR weapon for most of the game. Regardless of that he still did pretty good.

Not concerned about the QBs. If the OL is good this team is going to do very well.

Here is my way-too-early prediction at the depth chart on offense:

QB: McCord, Brown, Kienholz (not a surprising list...Brown will keep pushing McCord but Kyle wins on knowing the offense a bit better, experience and the MH Jr. connection)
RB: Henderson, Miyan, Hayden, Trayanum, Pryor (Henderson and Miyan are basically co-starters in my eyes...Hayden and Trayanum will get their opportunities, personally I like Hayden best over Trayanum...Pryor is a wildcard if healthy, tons of talent but has had a horrible injury bug)
WR: MH Jr, Ballard, Innis (really the best WRs get on the field, technical positions are irrelevant imo...you have MH Jr and Egbuka who will rarely come off the field...X is going to be used a lot this year imo and Fleming played well last year, so you will see him plenty...rest of the rarified PT will be tough to call, but I say Tate forces his way on the field and Innis likely does as well, but Rogers and Antwi could certainly break through)
WR: Egbuka, X Johnson, Rogers
WR: Fleming, Tate, Antwi
TE: Stover, Royer, Thurman, Scott, Hart, Bennett (Stover is obviously the starter....#2 is up in the air and I think it depends on formational strategies but Royer seems like the best #2 TE pure TE to me, with Scott coming in for a hybrid WR/TE role...Thurman is so obviously talented and has all the tangibles, so I put him ahead of some vets because he might force his way onto the field...I think Hart and Bennett can both be fine players in their own right, but there is a logjam at the position this year)
LT: Fryar, Michalski, Fitzpatrick (while I think Fryar is best suited as a RT, he is our best tackle and that is why he starts there...Zen and Fitz are probably the depth guys here, but neither one seems to have seized the opportunity at LT and would need a great summer camp to do so)
LG: Jackson, Cutler, Padilla (obviously Jackson starts, then I think Cutler was viewed as an insurance policy at guard/tackle as a utility guy but could be a very important pickup if we have injuries...Padilla is going to be a monster, I just think he needs a year of Coach Mic time and to learn the offense)
C: Hinzman, James (Jones could bump down to C if that gets the best 5 on the filed, but I think Hinzman should be ready...James could push but I haven't heard rave reviews on him thus far)
RG: Jones, Vimahi (Jones is the clear starter, but Vimahi will play somewhere along the line imo and play a big role)
RT: Simmons, Tshabola, Montgomery (Simmons was brought here to start and Tshabola will need a great summer to win this spot, but not unforeseeable at all...Montgomery likely needs a RS year to develop but I haven't seen anything from Toutant or Leroux to suggest they would be better suited to play in a pinch)

Anxious to see if our running game can return to championship caliber this year.
We need it to so we can win late in November. It helps to have the studs we have at WR but we’ll see how this motley crew on the line comes together. I think Traveon Hendo is special and was really slowed last year by a nagging foot injury. That takes a lot out of a guy like his game. I think he’ll have a big bounce back year. We know meatball will be bruising and we should have good depth.
