Jim Knowles explains the 'most important' aspects of Ohio State's defensive philosophy

Ohio State’s defense has been incredible this season under DC Jim Knowles.

The Buckeyes have yet to give up a touchdown more than 2 yards this season, a fact when brought up to Knowles prompted him to knock once on the wooden podium he was standing at.

Despite Ohio State’s incredible defense this season, the Buckeyes have not logged a lot of sacks on their QB pressures. In fact, OSU sits 2nd to last in the conference with just 5 sacks on the season thus far.

But that doesn’t seem to concern Knowles. Instead, he told reporters that he’s more focused on limiting explosive plays and getting off the field on 3rd and 4th downs.

It seems like he's talking himself into that mantra, but I'll take it. Just get off the damn field and get our offense back out there, and I don't care about the rest of the stats.

But as the Buckeyes face an offense predicated on explosive plays from the arm of Taulia Tagovailoa, the pass rush should have opportunities to get home – though they’ll need to contain Maryland’s gunslinger.

“It’s got to be a coordinated rush, because you see multiple instances of guys coming free and then he makes them miss,” Knowles said. “So, really, there’s a lot of coordination involved in trying to contain him. It’s got to be a big part of the game plan.”

Amen. Bracket the shit out of T-word (not going to look his name up) and just force the punt. If we get some turnovers that is great obviously, but we don't need to have huge defensive plays in this game...just make Maryland have sustained drives and all will be well.

It’s crazy that after last season the strength of this team, after having MHJ on the roster, is the secondary.
We need to lean on that strength vs ttun.

We are going to need to stack the box and trust our corners to make plays this time.

Crazy enough I think the 2022 game plan can work this year (minus the run busts) because we actually have the secondary to man people up for once.

I think we’ll know what lies in store after the Wiscy game. My concern against a heavy, physical run team is LB play. The middle of this D at the second level is wide open. We’re going to need the safeties in this 4-2-5 scheme to play big.

Im optimistic. Proctor and Ransom have always been very... assertive 8D in run support, it's been coverage where they were suspect.
A game where they can flow downhill like an Atwater? Yes please.
