Here is my way too early depth chart prediction on defense. Note I am saying screw it on the hybrid positions, but staying with a 4-2-5 scheme:

DE: JT (get ready for the breakout year), Curry/Abor (both are studs and have developed physically, they will both see the field)
DE: Sawyer (obvious starter, hopefully no more "Jack" role and just plays a straight up DE), Jackson (developed physically now and with his athleticism, I would imagine he flashes this year)
DT: Tyleik (he's gotta be ready to wreak havoc in the middle), Hamilton (solid player that I hope improves for next season because we need some snaps from him), Mickens (a little under the radar recruit but I love his game and we may need him to play a little this year)
DT: Hall Jr (if he's healthy, he is a game changer), Kanu (was raw coming in, but has a ton of talent and we need snaps from him this year), McDonald (I know, true frosh DT...but he has the college-ready size and depth is needed at DT)
LB: Eich (nothing to be said, leader of the defense), Simon (would start at most schools, amazing depth player), Carrico (not really much noise from him but assume he is on the depth chart)
LB: Chambers (same as Eich, stud and glad to have him back), Hicks (he's gotta play this year in some capacity, too much talent to keep off the field after a year of developing physically and learning the system), Powers (loved him as a recruit, may have to take limited PT this year and then seize the moment when Eich and Chambers leave)
CB: Burke (I am confident he bounces back and has a good year), Hancock (I see Hancock playing a good bit this year and improving)
CB: Davison (not trying to spell out his last name, but seems like a great corner...will battle it out with Hancock for the job most likely), J Brown (looked good in limited action, should play this year), Mathews (I think so highly of Mathews that he could become a starter as a frosh, he's that good...more likely that he rotates in, but he has the physicality and confidence of a veteran CB out there)
S: Ransom (had some unfortunate moments the last two games, but he is a talented player)
S: Proctor (good deep field safety that my only concern on is injuries)
S: Styles (too good to be held off the field, though Carter and Stokes could make a move), Carter (could very well be Stokes here or Carter could start), Stokes (could take a starting role, he is talented...position is just deep)

- Overall: Very confident on DE and the guys there. DT I like our starters, but depth is a concern until we see what we have behind Hall and Tyleik, who both have had injury and/or endurance issues. LB I am at the highest confidence level on, the starters are great and we have very good depth and potential at. DB should be very good with recruiting and transfer portal pickups (Davison and Carter), I said it in another thread but if the DB group isn't markedly better, then we have a coaching issue. I would expect a much improved defense overall this year, but we'll see when the rubber meets the road.

I know he doesn’t have the big name so people write him off, but Hamilton was probably the second best DT last season overall. He probably has the highest floor, but lowest ceiling of all of the potential starters but he’s way more consistent that Tyleik or Hall.

Probably more consistent than Williams, but I wouldn't say that of Hall. Hall was injured most of the year, so it's difficult to know how good he would've been at full strength. But I agree, that Hamilton is the most reliable DT returning.

I can agree with that, Hamilton maintains his gaps and gets the job done...in a way that doesn't get noticed but he is a crucial cog inside. To me if Tyleik and Hall are healthy for most of the season, we are good at DT. But given their past history, I am a tad concerned that won't happen and depth at DT is a little concerning to me. I will say McDonald is an exciting prospect that I think is physically ready to play, hoping he can contribute right away because we may need him.

Don't forget about Kanu as well.
And I'm sure they will pursue a DT in the next Portal window for depth

Three Questions about the 2023 Ohio State secondary

Have the Buckeyes adjusted their approach from 2022?
  1. Has The Defensive Coaching Staff Learned From Its Mistakes Of 2022?
  2. Can Denzel Burke Rebound From A Shaky 2022 Season?
  3. What Role Will Sonny Styles Play In 2023?

I think it’s only a matter of time before Hero Kanu becomes a household name. I think he could end up being a better version of Davon Hamilton.

Kanu is one I had on the radar from following his recruitment and thought he would be a star with more development, but didn't know if he needed another year to get ready. After watching the spring game, he looks about ready to break onto the scene. If we can keep a healthy rotation of Hall, Tyleik, Hamilton, Kanu and McKenzie, then I think we will be good at DT. I would also think JT can drop down to DT in rush packages like we did with J Bosa at times. Bottom line for me is that DT could be a strength but we have to stay healthy at the position.

Everyone is concerned about the DT depth but IMO that'll be cured with Kayden McDonald.

I'm in line with Birm on this kid. He's a game wrecker and my hot take is he's going to force himself into the top 6 on the DL as a true freshman.

We haven't had kids like this who can move like this at his size for a DT.

QUICK HITS: OHIO STATE'S DEFENSIVE COACHES DISCUSS TRANSFER ADDITIONS AT DT AND CB, GIVE INJURY UPDATES AND EXPECTATIONS AHEAD OF THE 2023 SEASON

Ohio State's defense is preparing for its second season under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

Nearly a month and a half after the conclusion of spring football, all four of Ohio State's defensive assistant coaches met with reporters on Tuesday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to provide updates on how their individual position groups were developing. Coaches that spoke include defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, cornerbacks coach Tim Walton, defensive line coach Larry Johnson and safeties coach Perry Eliano.
Questions ranged from inquiring about the new transfer portal additions in Tywone Malone and Lorenzo Styles Jr., to the development of certain payers, to expectations for the upcoming 2023 season.

JIM KNOWLES

  • Knowles says Sonny Styles is "more adept at playing a high safety position than you would think for a bigger guy. … "He'll be able to compete at a high safety position, because I think we're gonna need him there." Knowles says there will still be a package where Styles plays closer to the line of scrimmage, too.
  • Tommy Eicheberg and Steele Chambers are “both 100% now” health-wise after dealing with injuries in the spring.
  • Knowles says C.J. Hicks and Gabe Powers “made a lot of progress” in the spring and predicts “some time this season we’re gonna see (Hicks) really unleash.” Knowles says Hicks won’t be “pressed into service” because of the veterans in front of him, but says “he’s on the cusp of breaking out.”
  • Knowles mentions Hicks and Mitchell Melton as the two players he’s looking at as Jack linebackers in the 2023 season.
  • Knowles says the defensive breakdowns at the end of the 2022 season “has haunted me, but just haunting me, that doesn’t do anybody any good.” Knowles says “if it’s a problem, you have to fix it. You have to take accountability.”
  • Knowles says Ja’Had Carter is a “versatile guy” who “increased the competition at all the safety spots.” Knowles says Carter is “fine” health-wise after having his spring cut short with an injury.
Just sayin': See the article for what the other defensive coaches said.
