2023 Spring Practices and Other Tidbits

FWIW, here's what Our Lads think the 2023 2 depth chart might look like:

Jakob James is out all spring with an injury so he isn’t realistic at starter.

I think it will be Cutler, and not that there won’t be an open competition for center, I just think that his experience factor gives Cutler a huge leg up…..and he expects to start. It isn’t last years o-line, but still really solid……outside shot it actually better at mauling in run game. Will not be as strong in pass protection as last year….we know that.

Not sure about Jack Sawyer at the “Jack”…think that might change.

Don’t see Josh Proctor on depth chart at all which is strange….he’s at least in 2 deep.

Not sure how they get worked into excessive snaps, but think Sonny Styles and CJ Hicks get a ton of PT.

Very interesting early list.
I agree with everything you said, Cutler is set to be the starting OC, and with Frye adamant that Jones and Jackson stay at OG, must mean he likes some names at OT. I just have a feeling that Tshabola is going to force his way into the starting lineup. And if he does, I see him as more of a RT, could Fryar slide to LT? Chrisman is a IOL, IMO, and Fitzpatrick I see as the backup at OT.

We all saw that Sawyer isn't a player who can play in the open field at Jack, he needs to be on the line. Knowles has said that he doesn't want an LB at Jack, and keeps bringing up Melton. I haven't seen anything from Melton to mention him because he's always been injured. I can see 2 of Curry, Abor or Jackson at Jack, IMO, and I guess throw Melton in there since the DC is high on him.

Backup TE will be an interesting watch, I'm sure we all are curious to see if Gee Scott Jr. can finally put it all together.

I think the author had Proctor leaving. But since he's returning, I have him replacing Kourt Williams(who can't seem to stay healthy or find a true position).

Hicks and Styles should get a bunch of snaps in rotation next year.

And Igbonusin(sp), Hancock and Brown will be a heck of a battle for the other starting CB.

Such a talented team for this upcoming season. OL will be interesting. Cutler is versatile and has experience but I think Hinzman brings a lot to the table. Greater upside IMHO. Would not be surprised to see him win the Center job in the Spring. Methinks having Zen and Tegra as LT options is a big plus. I could see Tegra as the backup at both Tackle positions. Jackson and Jones may be the best Guard combo in CFB.

Personally, I think the run game is key to how our season goes next year. It’s imperative with a new QB to establish a nasty, downhill run game, that allows playaction for a new QB.

I think the RB room has to be sky-high in terms of motivation and expectations.

I also think the defense is going to take a sizeable step forward. If everything comes together this team can be a CFP team…..the schedule is beyond brutal though….will be an interesting season for sure.

I don't see how OSU can get bitten by the injury bug so bag for a 2nd straight year at RB. There's so much talent in that room, it'd be hard for me to bet against a health and POed Henderson, to go with Williams. My only worry is will there be enough carries for all 4 RBs

why would you even say that?

Well, the DEs will be an interesting group to watch all off season. Recent interview with LJsr shows that he's entirely on board with the Jack position. Or at least having to use his DEs at the Jack. I think most would agree that a lighter, LB would be a better option(ahem CJ Hicks/Melton), and let guys like Sawyer, Curry, etc focus on dominating on the DL. And using the Jack as part of the Rushmen on passing downs. Knowles' use of the Jack at OSUlite was a guy who weighed in the 230lb range, so his ability to cover in the open field will much better. Sawyer tips the scales at 270lbs, that's almost like OSU wanting a Bosa to play the Jack position when it was clear that his best position was hands in the dirt on the DL.

Whatever the answer is, it needs a solid concrete answer in order for this defense to reach their best selves. The DL coach and DC have an off season to figure out where they want their best players to play.

I like the thought of the Jack position, but think it shouldn’t be a base defense. Imo, JT and Sawyer on the ends offer the best talent on the line against the pass and run. Subbing one out for CJ would be a great gameplan. Just like IMO, the nickel should be a S in base, but a CB should be a sub option.
