Utah has achieved something akin to balance on offense - 158 passing, 166 rushing.

Ohio State is all sorts of out of whack there - only 36 yards on the ground vs. 289 in the air.

I remember two other games that looked similar to that this year..... and they lost both.

Beyond the poor play, the fact the defense frequently burns TOs in the 1st Q because they can't line up properly is costing the O points in end-of-half situations.

Honestly, if I’m Ryan Day, I’m on the phone to Knowles as soon as I get in the locker room at the half and telling him to start assembling the new defensive staff. I’m firing every coach on defense. All of them. It’s that fucking bad.

A lot of that rush yardage was on the busted TD play. Too many free 8-12 yard pass plays.

The problem is the coverage. There have been 3 or 4 that would have been sacks and one maybe a stop fumble if they make the QB hold it half a second longer

As bad as the defense has been, two plays not by them are why it's 21-35 instead of 28-28.

Still, you can't give up 4 first half TD drives to Utah. It puts so much pressure on everyone else.

Yup - I'm to the acceptance phase too. I am somewhat skeptical it gets fixed in one year but we'll see.

What is disappointing is that an all-timer of an offense has been wasted on a defense that would and has struggled against even mediocre offenses. I think there's a talent gap - not that they are necessarily bad, more like a gap on fit - and I think it'll take 2 or 3 recruiting classes to really fix the fit.

I dunno. I can’t really tell if it’s a talent issue or scheme issue. 2018 looked equally as bad for much of the year yet miraculously became one of the best OSU defenses ever one year later. At worst though I see a top 20 defense.
