I think what might have happened is the coaching staff saw an injured Utah player and thought the officials may call a time out. That did not happen either because the guy must have got up or ran off the field. Caught off guard Day called a time out when he realized an official’s time out was not going to be called. I think he wanted to run another play at 20 plus seconds but no official time out and they called a time when they realized it was going to called. After calling the time out he must have realized running another play with 12 seconds was really risky and the clock could have run out. With 20 plus seconds you could have ran a play and then spiked it and kicked the FG on 4th down. That is all I got and if that is not the reason I have no idea why he took the timeout when he did…
