2022 Rose Bowl, tOSU vs Utah, Jan 1st @ 5pm EST, ESPN

It's the Lazy Narrative Bowl.

- Big time program that failed to reach the CFP
- Small time program with grit and heart
- The stadium will be full of __________ fans
- Spurned Ohio kid
- Big team doesn't want to be there
- Small team dealing with tragedy

Blah blah blah
Making Fowler and Herbstreit’s job easy.

Not that either tries very hard to begin with.

Honestly just want to get this game over with
Yep.

If ever the 'rona was going to shut down a Buckeye game, this would be the one.

Feels like the game against Florida after 2011.

Jeez we've gotten old and crotchety on these forums. It's Buckeye football goddamn it. The thing we crave all spring and summer.

Everyone should remember that what we feel about the season isn't exactly what the team is feeling. Some are pissed, some disappointed and some have lost interest likely. Remember that the true freshmen on this team have never had a CFP run and game to play in and there's a lot of them playing big roles. The RS freshmen and sophomores are hungry to play minutes and earn their spots. If this was a senior laden team, I'd be more worried about them not showing up for this game. That means the Oline is the most suspect for success in this game which could be problematic but the guys behind them are pretty freaking good. CJ and Hendo wont be slacking you can count on that. The playing time and strategy is more problematic in my opinion.

The guys who put those pads on are still going to want to kick the ass of the guy in front of them in the game, I know I did even on the lone losing team I was on. You forget about the season issues and just go play the game. Nobody likes to get their ass kicked and they've just had it kicked by their rivals. Time to man up and go to work.

Just had that same argument with someone on a different site. I think it's hilarious that some fans feel that their opinions and what they think has any bearing at all on how the team plays.

Not trying to be negative, but I do think every intangible factor that has already been mentioned in this thread is going to be tough to overcome. Talent is superior on our side if most of our guys play, but it's likely we'll have key players sit out and yeah, Utah is going to be way more excited to be in this game. UNLESS Day does his job and gets the players up for this game. Plus, throwing aside narratives and motivation, let's remind ourselves that Utah beat the fuck out of one of the teams that beat us (Oregon)...twice and it was pure domination from the start to end. So on the field results should also suggest that thinking the Bucks might not win this one is not simply being a negative fan. Tbh, I have no idea why we are the heavy favorite heading into this game.

Then you have the fact that each player is different heading into this game. You've got upperclassmen that decided to come back to win a championship and that is out the window on top of losing to our rival and not even playing in the B1G Championship...that's gotta be hard and if you have the draft at stake, perhaps that one last game really isn't worth getting injured for with every single goal we have as a team out the window before the whistle blows. Then you've got players like Wilson that had to come back for one more year, but is a sure fire 1st round pick that could get injured in a game without a chance at a championship. Then you've got guys that theoretically could boost their draft stock a bit with a big game (immediately thinking of Harrison if he wants to go pro, maybe Hickman), but I don't really think a good game in the Rose Bowl will bump the meter much versus a good Senior Bowl/Combine performance. Then you've got a lot of youngsters excited for the game and ready to earn a spot, so they should play hungry. That's a lot of potentially competing interests that wouldn't be at play if we were in the CFP. But on the other end, every player for Utah will play and play like this is the Super Bowl, because it is for them quite frankly. Hopefully Day can manage all that and get the team on the same page that the Rose Bowl is important.

I hope I'm wrong and we trounce them, but if I had to bet on this game it would be on Utah. Just seems as scripted to happen as the loss to ttun considering all factors. I am not throwing out a prediction on the score until I know who is going to sit out on our side though.

I want to see who shows up after the TTUN debacle. Does the team respond or do we get a Cooperesque 0-2 ending to the season?

Ohio State should beat Utah.

I don't know about the latter part. Ohio State is -6.5 because "Ohio State." The yoots are the exact type of team that Oregon and tsun are. Yes, there's a chance that we can simply out-talent them on offense, make some big plays early and coast. There's also a chance that they grind down our defense and keep our offense off the field enough to win by 10. I'm not touching this motherfucker with real money, but if I did, I'd probably take the yoots and the six and a half.

Individual goals trump team goals for this game. You pretty much nailed it..the two best teams on our schedule we took L,s ..this may be the best team we have faced recipe for a disaster.

wait what?

- Style of play: We've struggled against physical teams
- Crowd advantage: Should be 70-30 in favor of Utah
- Emotional edge: They have a chance to achieve all their goals, make a huge national statement, and play to honor the tragic loss of their teammates. Meanwhile, we missed out on every preseason goal, so I can't imagine how there isn't at least some emotional letdown.

Of course we still have a sizeable talent advantage (at least on paper). But disinterested/unmotivated talent loses frequently, especially in bowl games. That's why I'm picking Utah. Should go without saying I hope I'm wrong
