2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

I have no idea what they were doing on the counters. Every single one got kicked out wide for a cross to nobody.

So, this is one of the things that drives me a little nuts about this group. Sometimes they're trying to play chess on the last pass when only checkers is required. WHich is to say sometimes the best crosses are the ones where you give someone a chance to put it on frame, and sometimes that means not hitting it as hard as you can. Like, even Weah's cross that the Wales defender hit to the Goalkeeper.... well, I don't know that he doesn't have a chance to play it with less pace and still hit Sargent with it (may not even need to play it early), was fun to watch and scary for Wales, but, the idea is to find the white shirts.

I think it was in extra time, but Yedlin had a couple where he just dumped it softly back in the mix, in a place where the GK can't get it. You do that and that gets you more on frame and its increases the amount of emergency defending by Wales.

Overall they did a nice job of getting the fullbacks forward with the ball to make the cross with multiple guys in the box but a lot of times those guys were really on a flat line across the front, I'd like to see a little more depth and as a result you might get a couple better angles for the cross to come in. (Right before the Bale PK and right after Aaronson came on they finally set it up right but no one got on the shot.)

Especially with the number of second balls they won, they should have had more shots in the first half.

Yeah I think BN27 pointed out it would be nice if we didn’t just kick it into the Wales defense

It almost seemed like a strategy to go with hard driven crosses. Pulisic’s corners all came in very driven vs lofted or curved. Would have liked to gotten the ball over the first defender to give guys a chance. The crosses hardly got “in the mix”

And also maybe play more central combos now and then. Seemed like no desire to go up the middle.

Wales was playing basically 3 DMs over 5 defenders in the first half when they didn't have possession, gonna be pretty hard to go through the middle. So I think the plan to attack the wings was correct, generally.
