2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

The French publication L’Equipe is saying Messi’s OT goal should have been disallowed because two players from the bench were on the field early to celebrate. Disallowing that would have caused riots in Buenos Aires.

I wish they’d go back to the Golden Goal. That Messi OT goal would have been the most golden ever, wrapping up the Cup, the Golden Boot, and the Golden Ball.

I’d just like to see an OT goal celebrated like crazy, and have things over, instead of saying, OK, we’ve won it if we can play defense for 10 more minutes. It’s not like playing each way for 15 minutes really matters in the World Cup stadiums, there’s almost never a serious advantage due to wind or something else.

Counterpoint: the game ended up being decided in a PK shootout, instead of play on the field.

Which I guess makes me wonder how "less play on the field" makes it better?

I mean we (and be we, I mean me) hate the NFL overtime because first, if you got won the coin toss there was a super good chance you were going to win on the strength of an effort by some dude who probably used to play soccer. So they changed that if you lost on the coin toss, you could still win the game with a dude that probably used to play soccer. So, either the special units are important enough to win and lose games, or you there's more like HS/NCAA overtime, where its based on equal possessions. I would argue that PK's are very much part of soccer.

Here's my thing.... if the order of the Extra Time goals are reversed here, and Mbappe gets the penalty kick first and wins (after kicking it into the dude's arm*) I don't think anyone is feeling like justice was served there.

Further, we already saw Argentina nearly go out napping against Netherlands. (after letting 2 in after 80 in this one) and then obviously letting themselves into a situation where they let France equalize yet again.

Its meant to be grueling, especially in a tournament where there was so much added time in regulation. So, the tactics and the substitution speak more loudly the further you go. In the end Argentina managed it better and even went so far as to substitute Paulo Dybala for a defender at minute 120+1 so he could take their second PK - and that one put them ahead for good. If you look back to Croatia and Brazil, Neymar walks off not even having taken a PK in the shootout - how the fuck does that happen? Conversely I'm sure there were some dudes Croatia wish they still had in the match against Japan even though it ended up not mattering. But they did miss their 3rd in that one, but against Brazil the 3rd kick was taken by Luka Modric who had been subbed out (I think at the end of regulation).

Anyway, I suppose the fun of the golden goal is the excitement, but the argument is a lot stronger if its "well we had to endure that last 10 minutes for no good reason then celebrate as they had it well in hand." ' Cept the part where France Mbappe still had another thing to say.

*I'm not in any way suggesting that penalty shouldn't have been awarded, that said, if it doesn't hit Montiel's arm, I think its 20 rows into the crowd.
