With all the talk of the new hires and the young new DC, McDonald, he hasn't looked much better than Don Brown. Even with the weak schedule, that defense has looked above average at best. MSU was by far their best competition, and I honestly couldn't name the 2nd best, maybe a Wisconsin with no identity(because they didn't play the same Wisky that beat down Iowa). And the playcalling is just bad on both sides of the ball.
Yes, but are there any other teams in the Big Ten East who ever go up tempo? The thing with McDonald is he doesn’t seem to know that the ref doesn’t stand between the center and the quarterback when the offense doesn’t substitute, so the defense can’t substitute either.
Michigan had multiple substitution penalties when Sparty went up tempo. No excuse for not knowing the rules.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1/11/21: Michigan's defensive coordinator, Mike McDonald, revealed that the defensive team's emphasis for this week will be on faking injuries. "That was a real weakness for us last week. linemen, linebackers, even the deep backs, failed to get on the ground and groan, grab a knee and rub it, or simply take a step or two toward the sidelines with an apparent limp and a dazed facial expression. It allowed our game plan to get out of rhythm. We need to clear that up before our real rivalry game with Penn State."
With the game-day coaching expertise that each head coach displays, I see epic fail all around on that one. Keystone cops comes to mind.Yeah, responding to my own post to drive my numbers up... But what an interesting game PSU and UM could put on with each team trying to set the world record for flopping to get their subs in.
It's not as easy as it looks. You've got to get the signal in on who needs to flop - a lineman if you want your rush package in, a linebacker if you need a nickel back, a corner if you need another DL. And the safety has to be next to the ref so he can faint if the other guy misses his cue. It's all strategic.
