Agree that Wypler is struggling, but IMO it's too late in the year to shuffle players around. They're not playing as a unit in the running game and changing out Jones for Wypler would eliminate the possibility of getting much better.

I think @pnuts34 mentioned this in another thread, but you go with want you have at this point and hope they learn from film and in-game reps. Honestly, I don't even want Matt Jones subbing in every 2-3 series. The starting 5 need every rep they can get.
100%... full steam ahead at this point.

It's too bad Miller had an issues that's kept him out because he seems a bit more sturdy and strong than Luke. Maybe he could've helped us there...

At any rate the coaches have to unfortunately game plan around Wypler struggling to hold the point of attack.

This is the problem with all of the "we have to get Matt Jones reps" stuff. Everyone on the line is now afraid of being replaced and is playing to avoid mistakes instead of playing to win their assignments. If they get a decent lead on Saturday, they need to run Jones at center for a couple of series. Even if he's not perfect, it's very likely that he's a Net Gain over Wypler.

I disagree with the people who say Stroud not running doesn't affect this, though. We're at a point in the season where people know Stroud is too scared to run. There's no threat of him breaking one off. If he has nobody to throw to, he'll just throw it out of bounds rather than take off with the football. That's a problem. It allows the defense to collapse the middle more comfortably. A lot of these rushes up the middle that Wypler in particular can't handle can be alleviated (at least to an extent) if Stroud makes himself a running threat. The fact that he plays like he's scared to death to cross the line of scrimmage makes it really easy to crash the inside gaps and shut down the run. The LBs have to play wider if someone like Stroud shows that he's willing to take off with the football.

A running QB has nothing to do with the center being pushed 5 yards into the backfield.

Bama has won multiple NCs with statues for QBs! Their OL was the strength and that's why the running QB didn't matter. If this OL is getting push, Stroud not running doesn't matter because our RB depth is gashing defenses. If you look at the clip from @heisman , Stroud running won't help if the OL is missing blocks. I rather not have my QB take unnecessary hits if that's not in his game. Haskins had great success and didn't, run, his team didn't win bigger due to the defense.

I think the truth probably falls somewhere in between all the points being made. Wypler is struggling and I don't know that is a problem we can fix at this point. I'm really at a loss on the OL as a whole in the run game, I thought this would be one of the best OL we've had. We don't need Stroud to be a running QB, but he does need to take the guaranteed first down when it's wide open...my only bitch and moan is that he seems so focused on making everyone know he is a pass first QB that he's missing opportunities to help the team move the sticks. I could be wrong on that, but that's the sense I get. Everyone knows the kid has all the arm talent he needs, the situational awareness has to improve though. That includes not only running for the first when its there, it also includes not throwing picks on first down when he can throw the ball away and live another down.

With that diatribe over, I am concerned with the repeated mental mistakes this late in the season and it's going to burn us if we don't correct it soon. We've seen enough to know the talent is there, but the cohesion hasn't followed. I think most of the offensive problems can be fixed, but it has to be immediately.

“When you can’t make a shot, you just gotta keep fighting through it. So we’re gonna fight through the run game,” Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Tuesday. “It is the time of year in November, you gotta run the ball. You gotta run the ball in the Big Ten. We’ve got some great playmakers, we’ll keep throwing it great, we’ll keep doing our best to protect great, but we’ve got to run the ball well down the stretch to be the team we need to be. We’ve been working at it, and last two games, a little off, but I think it’s things that are correctable.”

“Even when you're running stretch plays, the object is you gotta get vertically down the field at some point in time. If you go sideways, you’re not gonna run the ball,” Wilson said. “We’ve talked a lot about it, the last two weeks with the defenses we’ve had, we’ve not done as good as we need to. It’ll be a challenge this week because Purdue’s strength is their front, their D-line, and in the weeks to come. So we’ve gotta do a better job.”

“The Big Ten is one of the toughest conferences in the nation. It’s not like every single weekend you’ll just roll through people,” Petit-Frere said. “There’s always gonna be great competition, there’s always gonna be great coaches that scheme up against you. All we can do is just work through those challenges and get better every single week.”

I hate piling on but when a team can wreck the interior that greatly it affects the ENTIRE interior. So the guards now are trying to chip on the nose which then makes it tough for them against players shooting gaps. I think teams have figured out that if they can disrupt the center everything fails on the interior. Then it doesn't matter that we have two dominant OTs because the pressure inside will stop the run and create a rush.

If he gets pushed around like that for a 3rd game that's bad news. Jones can play center so I'm not sure what the hesitation would be if Wypler is struggling this badly.

I feel like there are some weaknesses getting exposed on the interior line, at least on run downs. Teams are eating the Bucks alive. Not happy with Day’s creativity to counter this either - no stretch or outside plays. Give an end around or something.

anyway, thank goodness for Wypler’s fumble recovery. That was ugly from the offense.
Pop pass and an end around in the 1st half. You done good, Ryan. You done good.

I was telling UGA fan earlier that Day's playbook is about 50 pages deep and he gets himself stuck at times. When he opens it, like tonight, you can pretty much forget it. It will depend completely on the Oline if we get to UGA, well everyone left actually.
