Sorry for the many posts on this page but there's lots of good points being made. 1000% agree that for this offense to take the next step we need Stroud to run more (particularly in the red zone). He doesn't need to do it much but yes how many times is he going to run up to the line then hover sideways? Just take off and get 5+ yards.

Which will keep the RPO pass open. Without even the treat to run, that will close.

Absolutely agree. We don't need him to be Braxton or JT, but there are times when, even at my advanced age, I could move the chains. You take the 1st with the run and then get back on schedule. Also, there's no guessing as to what he's going to do - toss it just before the line of scrimmage. That just makes him the reciprocal of JTB; still a one trick pony, just the other way. The O in RPO stands for Option and if you don't take the R now and then, we'll be less effective.

The “R” is for the RB, in Day’s offense. I understand people wanting him to run, but that just isn’t a part of the offense anymore. CJ could do himself well by scrambling more absolutely, but having the option to keep it is almost nonexistent anymore.

It seems so. I think that cuts against the balance and productivity of the offense. I'm (admittedly, a little surprised) liking Stroud better as a passer than Fields, but I liked knowing that if necessary, Fields would keep the chains moving.

I got distracted by the RPO discussion. My initial point when logging on was going to be, why in the name of gods, old and new, can't the Ohio State University get two yards whenever the fuck it wants? Barring a false start or a failure to snap by the center, of course. This isn't really a new question as the frustration isn't new, but it's exceptionally material this year.

I agree that having Stroud keep the ball occasionally will help the red zone offense. But I’m on board with minimizing the hits he takes. I remember the Texas team of 2006 that had gotten on a roll after their early loss to the Buckeyes. Colt McCoy scored on a QB sneak early in the Kansas State game, but was injured on the play, resulting in them losing that game and their next one to aTm, when they had a chance to get back to #2 for a possible rematch in the BCS Title Game.

I know we have solid backups, and I’d like to see CJ take off when there’s plenty of open space, but I’m also fine with protecting him, he’s already had a shoulder issue earlier in the year.

Pretty sure Day was asked about this and gave some non answer.

He’s too good of an offensive mind to not see what we all do. I almost expect Stroud to have some runs in the coming weeks.

Is anyone else concerned with the offensive lines performances against physical defensive lines this season?
Only if CJ is never going to run.

Reducing pursuit and keeping Defenses in their gaps would go a long way to help getting push and keeping cutback options. They were pinching and pursuing like mad on run plays completely ignoring CJ. Also, if you look at the great defenses lately, it's running QBs that give them the most fits. I don't want CJ turning into JT just the occasional gotcha play to keep them honest.

Edit: oops I guess its been covered ad nauseum

Double Edit: What I'd really love to see again is the Read-Option RPO. Where CJ reads the give and if he keeps it it's then an RPO so if the DB comes up he can make the throw to an open receiver. JF ran it once at least maybe a couple times. Talk about stressing the Defense!

I know many are talking about the lack of an RPO in the offense. And maybe it has to do with not wanting further injury from Stroud. But what if they incorporate more jet sweeps as another option in the pass game if Stroud is going to be one less run option. I’m all for Stroud running on broken plays, but if he won’t, no problem with check down and quick WR screens in space. All 3 WRs that start can be great at that. And those screens can also be used in the RZ, but with a TE instead.
Just a thought

I’m not looking for anything crazy or even designed. I just want him to at least sometimes take the open six yards that are there on third or fourth down rather than throwing it for five of seven. If he does that, he’s lethal. The kid spins a beautiful ball.

If the first time I see him put his running skills to use is on November 27th and it puts the Wolverine D on their asses I will be just fine.

Exactly. Why not let Myan take a Crack at 1-2 yards?
