To this in the know(as I'm not): was Day enforcing the Single High defense on Coombs because he was the HC and that's what he wanted. Or because he knew Coombs had never called a defense before and this would ease some of the pressure from him?

Was Day sold on Combs or did Smith/Urban oversell Combs. I am all in with who Day selects..because I thought Hafley..huh and Combs was everything we wanted.

Agreed! I'm just confused as is it all on Day wanting a certain type of defense, or did he just think that Coombs was too "green" to call his own scheme. The single high was something Day and Hafley were familiar with, but is Day married to the scheme if an experienced DC is hired?

I think Chambers' size and the constant beating on him took a toll in the second half. He's better on the edge than in the middle but still you have to man up when the game is on and sell out especially to stop the run. I have to say I'm pretty sure I'd have flooded the box with defenders to make them consistently beat us in the pass game. They did make some plays but if we put the pressure on them to make those plays all game long, I think we come out ahead instead of getting steam rolled.

Agree.
Coombs was brutalized (rightfully so) for his lack of adjustments early this year.
Barnes should receive similar criticism.
Given how poor the CBs played, the end result may have been the same - but you need to make the opposition prove it.

Our LBs became designed to stop spread teams and not power running teams. Guys like Gant and Pope were missed last weekend...

We are built to stop the RPO spread teams but this is the B1G and you're going to play teams with very physical lines/backs. Even if we'd beat ttun it would've been a tough game vs the Hawkeyes or Badgers for that matter.

Every single physical team we played this year we struggled with and that can't happen.

Not sure what is needed but IMO we need to physically get back to 2019. What I mean is Malik Harrison was 240+ pounds, Werner was 240+, Browning 240+, and Hamilton at DT was 330 or something. Shoot even Tuf was what 235?

I pointed out the small ttun front 6-7 but failed to realize our size. 255-270 defensive ends, 220-235 LBs and DTs 300 or below (IMO both are under).

We need more size and we've got to install some sort of system for teams that want to strictly line up to run the ball.

One last thing, whenever we played a team that was elite at something we couldn't take it away (Purdue throwing and ttun running). If we can't make teams fight left handed? We'll continue to struggle when we play teams that have a good offense.

We didn't stop Purdue throwing really.
OSU makes other teams one handed by getting up by multiple scores. They protect the defense with the offense.

Nothing wrong with that philosophy in general but the defense must require less protection if Day want to get away from being a B12 team in the B1G.

Better be careful Jaxbuck, I said the same thing the day after The Game (we're slowly morphing into a BIG12 team) and was told that's "asinine".

I know there's a lot of talk about this season being over and not caring what bowl the team makes, but I will be curious to see what the defense looks like in the bowl game. My hope would be that having a couple weeks of practice to build on and reinforce the scheme changes made mid-season without jumping immediately into opponent prep would be very beneficial for the defense. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I think it should be an indicator of whether things are moving in a positive direction and if it's worth keeping Matt Barnes around in a co-coordinator type of role. Conversely, if they come out and look exactly like they did against Michigan, that's a problem.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm seeing a lot of, "we'll be getting revenge/redemption against Oregon" and that's far from automatic. It may not be 50/50, but there's still a chance that we lose again to Oregon or could even lose to Utah.

As to conference/playoff defensive match-ups, that's exactly the problem... in order to get to the playoff, we have to be able to stop physical running teams in The Game (I guess, now?) and against Wisky in Indy, but then have to deal with teams Clemson (not this year, obviously) and Alabama, and possibly USC in the future, who torch us. That's not going away so it needs to be somehow worked out strategically in recruiting and scheme.
