Well, you can't have your LT get blasted like a too small for Oline high school player in your rivalry game. I'm pretty sure that's not scheme even though most of the scheme seems fucked too often for a CFP caliber team. Make no mistake, this is one of the 5 best teams in the country but for whatever reason they have moments of total ineptitude. Hard to explain that away very easily

I think it actually kinda is…..they’re soft. When they get punched in the mouth they get bullied.

This team was front runners this year….fast start, and able to dictate play and they looked as good as Georgia. Fall behind early against smash mouth team and tuck your tail and hide. They just couldn’t get stops defensively.

The softness on the offer save side of the ball (even though the offense has been extremely good) is from playing (4) OT’s on the line. Just a lack of that Wyatt Davis nastiness.

Hopefully we show some fire in bowl game and Day lights a fire under their asses into 2022 season.

Wait, you're saying getting flat ran over and embarrassed at the left tackle position is scheme? That looked like lazy uninterested football to me not scheme related.

Munford was all big ten and helped pave the way in 2019 vs ttun. He didn't just lose his talent.

I'm ready to admit that Stud hasn't got the job done this year.

This is all coaching. We didn't just all the sudden lose our talent. We have more talent 10x more so than ttun we just got absolutely out schemed and we did not match their attitude.

So say you start next year with this:

DE: Tuimoloau - Friday
NT: Cage/Williams/Hall
DT: Vincent/Hamilton
DE: Sawyer - Harrison - JJB

LB: Chambers
LB: Simon - Gaoteote

CB: Burke
CB: ???
SF: Hickman
SF: Proctor

It's a start, and you'll have experience at all 3 levels at least. If neither Sawyer or JTT step up at DE, no one will. Same with Williams or maybe Hall at DT. I do think Hamilton can be an important player and Cage will be an experienced rotational

At least LB returns starters, but will still be dangerously thin. Hopefully they hit the transfer portal otherwise Hicks will need to play and play well immediately. I also think Kourt Williams could be an important piece here rather than at safety.

Burke has already shown himself to be an all conference level player in his first year, Hickman is a good SS, and everyone else is a mixed bag. Martinez looks to be a dynamic player but needs to be better in run coverage, Proctor will hopefully be back, but he's still unproven at FS. Not sure about Hancock or Johnson other than them being heralded recruits.

I would like to see Williams and Cage on together with Sawyer and JTT. In fact, I'd like to see that in the bowl game to start the chemistry now. Hopefully rumors are true and Ricks comes in and is healthy enough to man that other corner spot and we'll be the right scheme away from a Top 20 Defense.

The defensive recruiting classes of '18 and '19 were absolutely less talented than we are used to. It wasn't just this last game. We've been seeing it and commenting on it all year.

Or maybe we were extremely young this year and our coaching was terrible?

2018 we weren't terrible and that was with Bosa and Young. Then we get good coaching in 2019 and we were the best in the country.
Youth is BS on defense. Harrison, Garrett, Vincent, Smith, Pope, Mitchell, Gant, Eichenberg, Banks, Brown, and Williamson have all been at OSU for 3+yrs, so youth isn’t an excuse for the defense.

The offense can have that excuse but not the defense.

On the DB front certainlly, at linebacker probably but not at dline where they got their soul taken.

The upper class DL kids were highly ranked but have been absolute no-shows for their career.

If people want to argue the semantics of talent vs development they can have at it.

3 true freshmen didn't break through on the DL this year because the talent above them was special, I can say that with confidence.
