If anyone's like "well let's give it another year"... that's like giving Dom Brown another year at TTUN.
There are lots of people talking here. How about addressing them instead of imaginary boogeymen?
DO YOU WANT TO BEAT TTUN next year or no?
I hope they do. They don't need to transfer all of the scary parts to the NFL before hoping that happens.

Then most of our staff should be done on defense.

People were ok with that last year cause covid. But this year no one wants to keep them. Besides a few that hope we could keep coombs as DB coach. Also Washington once again is getting off relatively scot free. THe linebackers are his unit they are a good part of the reason we got the ball jammed down our throat in 2 games this year

Keep Larry.... otherwise everyone should go.

Freeman should be our DC next year and if he's not we are stupid.
I've been a huge LJ supporter. HUGE. But, the fact is that his unit (despite outrecruitjng nearly all of his peers at the position) has underachieved at an often-times catastrophic level. He's bringing in the guys, it just isn't translating to the field. So, unless he has been whiffing on all of the 4 & 5 star kids, there is an issue with "coaching 'em up." Being that he is about to turn 70, I tend to lean towards the latter.

His legacy here is secure, but too many coaches hang on for too long and I fear if he's back again, LJ will be one of those guys. It just isn't working anymore.

Now, all that said, there are major issues with each level of this defense. It all needs to be addressed. I can't make an argument for keeping one coach on the defensive side of the ball. Maybe Barnes because I think he did prevent the D from turning into a historically bad unit when he took over for Coombs, but I don't see him as a guy that screams "gotta keep him."
Neither is "trash." They don't appear to be championship-caliber, though, and that's the necessity here.
The defense and defensive coaches aren't trash, they're just not good enough to be a legit threat to win a NC or maybe even the B1G at the same clip we have the last decade. They're good enought to go 10-3 or 11-2. Most places, that's awesome. It ain't here.

I'd be up for Raymond also. Bring Ricks with him.

Freeman is from Huber Heights, played with the Bucks and coached under Fickel. He's only been at ND for a year and isnt overtly catholic. It's not out of the question thats why people keep talking about it. The Raymond stuff was pipe dream but there's chaos all over the place right now and our Defense sucks. We'll keep hoping untl something happens
I'm all for a change all along the defense except for LJsr, I just think there will be more options than just assuming Freeman is going to "come home". I'm sure there's a young up and coming defensive position coach on a lower tier CFB team or NFL that is dying to be a DC and will try new things to get this defense going. No different than scUM bringing in McDonald after years of Brown mediocrity. Many of us laughed at the McDonald hire, but that type of young, hungry hire on defense is what we need. And a pipedream is to keep Coombs in a more limited capacity(recruiting and developing DBs) and restructure his contract. If he doesn't agree to that, so be it

I was one of the people okay with giving a mulligan for last year. I didn't think it was fair to judge based on one disjointed season, but I always said this is a "prove it" year. Well, they didn't prove it. Yes, they had some good games and performed better once some roles/duties were shifted around, but today exposed the same glaring issues again.

I'm also curious about so many people's rationale for keeping LJ. His unit has underachieved more than any other given the way he's recruited. I'd place a lion's share of the blame for both 2021 losses on his DL. In both games they generated little-to-no pressure and got blown off the ball in the run game. Other than reward for past performance, I don't understand. IMO, LJ, Coombs and Washington are the 3 that should be evaluated the hardest because they've been bad for 2 seasons.

I think people are giving LJ the fickle Mulligan he got with Withers. People have seen him do it at high level for years and feel like he just didn't become mediocre. The difference is Fick was in his prime while LJ is 70 and might be just about to hang it up and his drive might be waning.

And I can kinda get that, LJ has been unbelievable here until 2020. But, it it's not just a scheme thing when your DL is getting mauled at the point of attack against not just good teams, sometimes the bad ones. Like I said above, yes, the defense has been bad across the board for much of the last two years, but it starts with the guys in the trenches. Both losses this season can easily be pointed to as a root cause with the LBs and secondary considered contributing factors. Unless their recruiting profiles missed horribly, they just aren't getting developed anymore. Something stinks there.

The "Rushmen" monicker has been a farce for 2 years.
