I was watching LBs when I rewatched. I would still like to see the play in the tweet. I can't imagine any way in hell he is responsible for pass crossing the LOS.

That play is earlier in the 2nd quarter. On that one, there was a double (I think it was a double, I haven’t gone back to it) A gap blitz. Instead of taking one step and turning, he took two steps. He didn’t play much after that. They went with Tuimoloau & Sawyer.

Bucknuts asked defensive line coach Larry Johnson why his unit is not playing up to par and is not making life difficult on opposing QBs. He said there are a lot of factors at play, but mentioned one thing stands out above the rest.

“Winning one-on-one battles,” Johnson said. “We have to win one-on-one battles and we’re not doing that enough. I don’t think it’s a technique thing, but when you get a one-on-one and you’re not facing max protection, you’ve got to try and win.

“So, we are addressing that and we will get better and our kids understand that, and it starts with me. So, we’re going to get it cranked up and get it going.”

I did not see that play when I rewatched it. I watched the game in double time. I would like to see that play at full speed because it very easily could have been the DE was rushing and is reacting to the play vs being responsible for covering a back out of the backfield. He is across the LOS so I am calling BS that he was dropping into coverage. No way he crosses the LOS if his responsibility was pass coverage. Is that all you have?
This is correct. He is rushing and the back crossed his face so he broke off and tried to run with him. He is not in man coverage from the jump he just tried to sniff out the play, which was a good idea just couldn't execute it.

Yeah it seemed like it... if that was his man that's a terrible play call asking a heavy defensive lineman to cover a back. Not quite Borland on a Heisman winner bad but it's up there.

Just my $.02 after reading so many comments online and listening to different podcasts, it seems like fans and analysts keep saying the same names. And they're almost all under classmen. The more I think about it, as much as a number of guys have been loyal and been on the bench for several years and are just now getting some PT, they're just not looking very good(i.e.: Vincent, Smith, Shaw, JJB). There's no reason to throw the young pups like JTT, Sawyer, Williams, Burke, Martinez, Hickman, Watts, and Simon on the field more. The younger guys have seemed hungrier and more willing to use their instincts and athleticism.

One thing I do not follow is the Opinions of the Media. They flock to whoever is the flavor of the week. Right now, the Buckeye season is pretty much over, since they are tired of seeing the same team win the Big 10.
So Penn St., Iowa and Michigan St. and that team up North are now the focus. That's fine. Akron offers another week to tune up the team for conference play. I get that the team should be playing more freshman to build something beyond the present. Do it.
I also realize the team may have a new QB next year in Ewers. So run the ball a lot more now with Henderson and Co. Ball control and clock management.

He turned and ran with the back because that was his job. He turned and ran with the RB before the ball even came out. Since the LB that would've covered him blitzed, they peeled the DE for any route across his face.

Here is another person explaining it.

“No excuse. We gotta get to the quarterback,” Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson said at Tuesday’s press conference. “Our guys know that, my room knows that, I know that. I don’t sleep well when we can’t get pressure on the quarterback, because that’s what we gotta do. If we do that, we’ll change the game. We’ll change the game immediately, and that’s what we’re gonna going forward, look to find ways to get to the quarterback. That means changing personnel, putting the right guys on the field to get it done. But the bottom line is we gotta get it done, and it starts with me.”

I think what we'll see isn't those upperclassman going away, but maybe as the year goes on they become the 'depth' and the young guys become the starters. Still need everyone to rotate and provide fresh legs. Might provide less pressure and more hunger for the upperclassmen as well.

That's what I was alluding to, play the underclassmen more and use the upper classes as backups. And hopefully that does light a fire under them and let's them know that the best will indeed play regardless of class

According to 11W class depth chart we have 18 live bodies along the DL

11 of those 18 (61%) have been in the program 3 years or more. I know COVID had a big impact on development but they are the group right now that's not really producing anything special. Harrison and Garret are the top names that we all think are pretty good but then again, DL pressure is non existent right now and they are part of that.

3 more showed up last fall and you only really see one guys name come up (Hamilton).

3 of the 4 true freshmen are the names we are already hoping turn it on and we've seen 2 of them flash already (JTT and T Williams).

If 60+% of your DL are upperclassmen and your DL is mediocre at best, you have just one part of the perfect storm of our defensive issues this year.

Dang. I pictured Michael while reading that with his cold and measured tone.

If thats the case, it was designed, then you have the crux of all the problems. Piss poor scheme and assignment. That shit aint gonna cut it unless you have Chase Young running step for step with someone. Then to blitz the LB who would have the flat or better cover angle. Fire everyone involved who came up with this garbage.
