2021 CFB Playoff Discussion

On field head to head results matter. Another loss at least removes that from serious consideration in a debate.
They don't if they look like two different teams at the end of the season. You can argue they matter till you're blue in the face but the committee has repeatedly shown. Things only matter if they consider teams comparable. If they don't consider them comparable at the end season cause Ohio state beat ranked teams and looked good doing it while Oregon struggles every week with unranked teams. At the end of the day yes another Oregon loss removes all doubt but things are still trending Ohio State's way

Apologies, but I can’t think of one instance in the final rankings where the committee did what you’ve said they’ve done repeatedly for not only playoff spots, but NY6. What am I forgetting?

Bammer over auburn 2017. Auburn beats Bama goes the the SEC championship game and loses. They give Bama the spot in the playoffs.

Ohio St over Penn St in 2016 too.

Sorry, the original post, in my interpretation, implied similar records (1- loss at end of season), which I was implicitly speaking to.

Both of those scenarios PSU and Aub >1 loss, negated head to head. In fact, the PSU example I believe furthers my point…PSU was playing much better football and won B1G…though the Aub/Bama example reversed that precedent.

Exactly my thought, if the records are the same and both teams are conference Champs, Oregon deserves to be ahead of us and I think the committee rankings would reflect that. Having more losses than the team you're being compared to throws the head to head almost out of the window.

Well I only used the Aub cause it's easy to argue they wouldn't have another loss if they they didn't play in the SEC championship. Also TCU Baylor 2014 was a mess that year but looks like they corrected that after if it didn't matter anymore

Aub had 2 Ls before the SEC title game….agree with you on the TCU/Baylor argument. Would’ve been really interesting if there weren’t a 59-0 beat down to give them an out on that debate.

Oops got me there but in the same vein as much as hate both teams 2016 TTUN and Penn State. Michigan had housed Penn State earlier in the year Penn State gets the Big 10 championship and ranked above them. Thogugh that year was all kinds of screwy and a major data point why Transititive properties don't work

ROSE BOWL

Projected matchup: Oregon vs. Ohio State

No one likes a rematch during bowl season, but it's going to happen if the Ducks and Buckeyes win their respective conferences. Oregon may have squandered its Playoff chances altogether Saturday with the loss at Stanford, a game that slipped through the Ducks' grasp late. That's one Mario Cristobal is going to want to have back a few weeks from now when Oregon is on the outside looking in. Ohio State has bounced back since its Week 2 loss to the Pac-12 frontrunner and played its best game of the season against Rutgers.

Just sayin': The Buckeyes would definitely like to have the game against Oregon back too.

Ohio State is finishing ahead of Oregon if both teams win out

Ohio State has probably 4 teams that will finish at least in the top 25 left on their schedule (Sparty, Peds, scUM, Iowa (assuming they make the B1G title game)

Oregon does not have a single top 25 team. When it comes down to it theres a high chance they are the only PAC team in the top 25 at seasons end.

Likely right but the PACCG will likely have ASU vs Oregon. ASU and Oregon both will be top 15, unless the guys from Corvallis have a say in it and muck up the whole damn thing.

Maybe. Arizona State seems like a team that could also lose 2 more games. Giving Arizona State their 4th loss in the PAC title game isnt exactly super sexy for the people who make the decisions on the playoff.

They get Stanford Friday night that will be interesting.

We still need Oregon to lose again. If it comes down to Ohio State and Oregon for the last spot, I don't care whose loss is worse or who played a harder schedule or who passed the eye test. If one of the comparison metrics is a head-to-head game then that is what's going to matter.
