2021 CFB Playoff Discussion

The problem with going with "stats" when justifying Oregon over OSU is that they don't have better stats on either offense or defense.

Oregon D YPG - 58th
OSU D YPG - 56th
Oregon D PPG - 42nd
OSU D PPG - 23rd

Oregon O YPG - 32nd
OSU O YPG - 1st
Oregon O PPG - 21st
OSU O PPG - 1st

Every SOS and advanced metric rankings them higher. In the end it doesn't matter at this point but it's annoying that the committee constantly contradicts themselves when answering questions and rece davis never pushes them on it.

Oregon won in Columbus. Thats's the real stat.

Not sure what Bama has done other than be "Alabama" - 2 point win over Florida? 6 point win over LSU? Lost to two-loss A&M? If they lose to Georgia they should be out but we know they'll get plenty of media lobbying on their behalf.

The banter after the win vs New Mexixo was how they are "finally back on track", "the pass rush is catching fire" blah blah blah. They're running out of things they can do to cover up for this year's "Not Bama". We win this week, and it's not in OT or by a point, they should be putting OSU at #2 and leave them there until the end of the season barring catastrophe

What's the stat for UM vs MSU? I won't argue with it if that's the reason but they should come out and say it and be consistent.

You want the "real" stats? We had more first downs (32 to 27), more passing yards (484 vs 236), and more total yards (612 vs 505). Our problem was that once we got near/inside their 20, we couldn't score. We also were 2 of 5 in 4th down tries. The biggest reason by far was that Stroud was just in his second career game, and it was against a team that was ranked in the top 10. Not to mention that our defense was fairly bad (not like now). Now that Stroud has eight additional games of experience under his belt, and the defense is markedly better, it will be a completely different game if we were to play in the CFP.

Calling our D only fairly Bad to start the year might be being kind. Right now we think we're anywhere from mediocre to good but not great. We'll have to find out. Next week should tell us a lot.

Q: Who picks up the tab for the CFP committee?
A: TV
Q: What does TV want?
A: Well, I'm from ESPN and we pay a shit ton of money to telecast as many SEC games as time will allow, and here's what we know - we own the South right up to the Ohio River and over to the west end of Texas. If we get Ohio State or Michigan, then we own all the way up to the border with Canada. If we get Notre Dame, we pick up the big cities, the Friars Club, about ten thousand nuns and priests, and the Vatican. So, since we're picking up the tab, just use whatever kind of logic, fact manipulation, fine grain bullshit analysis it takes to get us two SEC teams, a Big Ten champ from Columbus or Ann Arbor, and a 1 loss Notre Dame. In short, it's the TV ratings, football means nothing compared to how many sets are tuned to whatever we put on air, so give us what we want and look for the checks in the mail. Now go do your job.

If a one loss ND get in over an undefeated Cincinnati, I will only watch the OSU games. I know that is a pretty weak threat, especially since OSU will most likely play in 2/3rds of the CFP games. Plus, nobody cares if I watch anything anyway. But I am throwing down the gauntlet nevertheless! Screw you CFP committee!

Why are you arguing this shit with me (again) as though you're having to convince me (you don't)? I'd love another shot at the Ducks.

The reason Oregon is ahead of Ohio State, which is what I was addressing, is because they won the game. This committee isn't as nuanced as they like to pretend.

Exactly. I don't have a problem with it. I about spit out my drink when he said something along the lines of "of course watching the games is important, but......" to justify tsun over Sparty. Of course watching the 2006 Fiesta Bowl was important, but statistically speaking Ohio State was the much more complete team, so we're going to award them the national championship.

While I believe the desire to position tsun as best as possible for the "Michigan IS BACK" scenario is the wet dream that they have, I don't underestimate that they're building up a narrative with which to fist the juggalos in favor of Notre Dame if possible.

I'm "arguing" (as you put it) because you feel that because Oregon won by a TD, despite being significantly outgained, in the second game of the season, is the final word as far as rankings go. Yet Oregon lost to a Stanford team that is currently 3-7. Why not have Stanford ranked ahead of Oregon, because they, you know, beat them?

I guess part of the reason for Bama being #2 could be that they don't want to put Oregon #2 but they can't justify putting Ohio State ahead of Oregon?

Who knows though. I'm probably giving them too much benefit of the doubt there.
