2021 CFB Playoff Discussion

I think the only scenario that bumps a one-loss B1G champ Ohio State out is if Bama and UGA both get in, Okie and juggalo both go undefeated AND Oregon is a 1 loss PAC champ. In that scenario, I think the committee will avoid the OSU-Oregon decision and just bump both out. Other than that, no way we get left out if we run the B1G East, have the best offense in college football and have shown massive improvement on defense.

In which case Bucks and Ducks re-match becomes the Rose Bowl the way the founders liked it.

Some interesting sidebar stories to that - Without a championship to play for, I can see a significant number of the Buckeyes - Olivia, Wilson, Banks, Garret, Teague, Munford, Miller, Petite-Frere, and Ruckert choosing to sit out a "meaningless" bowl game. Thibeaudeaux didn't play the first game, probably won't want to play in the bowl game either.

Seniors opting out may be the best excuse to expand to an 8 team playoff. Do I want to watch the Bucks play a game without a boatload of starters? Maybe - the kids are pretty interesting this year.

Unless Bama, UGA, Oregon, and Oklahoma all win out (minus the sec cg), Buckeyes are in if they take care of business. Cincinnati is not getting in over a one loss P5 champ.

On Nov 27th I could see an undefeated Oklahoma (at 11-0) playing at an undefeated Oklahoma State (at 11-0) and both teams having to play again a week later in the BIG XII CCG. Regardless who wins the Nov 27th game, it's just really hard for any team to beat a good team twice in one season, especially in back to back games. One loss will probably knock any BIG XII out of the CFPs.

Also, if an undefeated Georgia (at 12-0) beats Alabama in the SEC CCG, 2 losses would probably knock Alabama of the the CFPs too.

For sure, should have clarified that another Bama loss at any time eliminates them. Also have a feeling Baylor could be a player in the big 12 down the stretch.

If that matchup is a meaningless bowl game, sign me up to watch nothing but meaningless bowl games.

You're 20 to 23 years old and told you should go in the first three rounds of the draft. Your team is out of the National Championship race. Are you going to play in the Rose Bowl? Like you, I don't think it's a meaningless game, but we're fans, not kids with a chance to hit the lottery and I don't think Lloyds of London is going to cover your loss over a four to ten-year span should you blow out a knee trying to win one more game for dear old Ohio.

Yes. You are. There’d be more reason for you to sit out if you’re that same player as a 12 seed in the expanded playoff.

???? So you agree, players are taking the bowl games outside the CFP as a risk not worth taking? I could not find an instance where a player on a team in the CFPs sat out, but there have been more than a few sit out other bowl games.

Denzel Ward sat out the Cotton Bowl game against USC in 2018/19 and I think another Buckeye sat out the 2019/2020 Rose Bowl game with Washington

Cotton Bowl Florida was missing star TE Kyle Pitts and WR Kadarius Toney, who announced that they would be sitting out the Bowl Game and concentrating on preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft

New Year’s Day games

Peach Bowl
Georgia (9) at Cincinnati (8)
ESPN - Noon

Georgia’s opt-outs include G Ben Cleveland, OC Trey Hill, CBs Eric Stokes and D.J. Daneil, TE Tre McKitty, and LB Monty Rice. EDGE Jermaine Johnson has opted out as well after transferring to Florida State.

Citrus Bowl
Auburn at Northwestern (14)
ABC - 1 p.m.

As with Georgia, Auburn has had several players opt out of their bowl game. WR Anthony Schwartz, S Jamien Sherwood, and DB Christian Tutt are all expected to opt out of the game — though, again, injury seems to be playing a role.

Northwestern Potential first round OT Rashawn Slater has also already opted out.

I agree that the smart thing to do for most NFL prospects is to skip the post-season, and I don't begrudge them for doing it. They put their entire future at risk by playing in those games. But I also don't think a National Championship ring is so much more meaningful than a Rose Bowl ring that it should change a player's decision on whether to play in the post-season. Evidently it is for most if not all players.

Who sat out the Rose Bowl?

I think it was the 2018/2019 Rose Bowl against Washington and he's probably referring to Nick Bosa sitting out:

ROSE BOWL NOTEBOOK: URBAN MEYER ON PLAYERS SITTING OUT BOWL GAMES, DWAYNE HASKINS VS. WASHINGTON AND MORE

Denzel Ward made the decision to sit out last year’s Cotton Bowl.

He wanted to preserve his health, for an injury would have been the only deterrent from him becoming a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. His teammates supported him. His coaches supported him. His family supported him. The majority of the fan base supported him, though a certain sector did not like the decision. Everything worked out. The Buckeyes won and he became the No. 4 overall selection in the draft.

Months ago, Nick Bosa chose to rehabilitate his core muscle injury with a focus toward the NFL instead of attempting to return for the tail end of this season. Other than him, though, no Ohio State player is expected to skip the bowl game to avoid an injury.

If Alabama and Georgia both go undefeated, the only thing the SEC CG decides is who gets seeded 1 and who gets seeded 2/3 in the CFP.

If Cincinnati is 3rd and Ohio State is 4th that sounds like the loser of the SECCG gets the better end of the deal. But I expect the committee to come to their senses and leave the Bearcats out of it: Georgia, Bama, Boomer Sooner, and Ohio State.

Go lose the Rose Bowl. It'll be the greatest achievement in the history of Cincinnati football.

If OSU wins out the teams that get in ahead of them are:

Alabama if they win out.
Georgia if they win out or lose only the SEC CG.
Oklahoma if they win out.
Oklahoma State if they win out (thus beating OU twice).

That's it. And since only one of the last two can happen - we would be in.

If we beat MSU, PSU, UM and the West champ nobody else has a schedule that would justify passing us.

Other than Oregon there is nobody in the PAC with less than 2 losses.

The ACC is becoming more of a joke conference every week. (Half the committee members will be surprised to learn that Pitt and Wake even have football teams.)

Cincinnati's best hope was that ND was for real. You can't compare wins over ND and SMU to what we are facing. Their only other hope is that the results vs our two common opponents (IU and Tulsa) trend dramatically in their favor. Despite our slight "struggle" with Tulsa, this weekend will put an end to that pipe dream.
