Russell gives the Scarlet and Gray a similar type of player to the one departing the program. Like Washington, Russell is a high-volume scorer who has the range to hit from well beyond the three-point line but can also handle the ball and get to the basket.
Coming out of Peabody Magnet High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, Russell was a three-star prospect in the 2017 class and the 17th best combo guard in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. After committing to Louisana, Russell continued to work on his game and got better every season. As a freshman in 2017-18, Russell averaged 15.1 minutes and 5.7 points per game. By his senior season a year ago, those numbers jumped to 33.6 minutes and 17.2 points per contest.
While Russell's career field goal percentage (41.0) and three-point percentage (37.5) remained relatively the same throughout his career, it's worth pointing out that he took 7.3 three-point attempts per game as a senior, making 40 percent of those attempts. Washington, by comparison, took 7.7 three pointers last year and made 37.4 percent of his attempts.
“It's no secret that they lost their top scorer, so me averaging 18 a game last year, I would come in to score the ball, play the combo, be in different pick and roll situations and help with scoring,” Russel continued to London.
