2021-2022 Ohio State Men's Basketball

“With Coach Holtmann, I was a defensive coordinator,” Johnson told FOX59’s JoJo Gentry. “Now, Coach Painter wants me to jump to the other side. That was really the most exciting part for me. I’m going to be able to be a well-rounded coach.”
Johnson needs to learn how to recruit to become a well-rounded coach. Something he did not do very well, that is putting it mildly, at Ohio State

Ohio State basketball learns its Big Ten opponents for the 2021-22 season

The conference will once again have a 20-game schedule, including playing seven teams both home and away and six teams once (three home and three away).

The Buckeyes’ home-and-home games will include Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin. The Golden Gophers and Wolverines defeated OSU in the 2020-21 regular season, but both losses were averaged in the conference tournament.

OSU will travel to Illinois, Purdue and Rutgers for one-offs. The Boilermakers’ home arena didn’t bring much luck to Chris Holtmann’s team last season. In two trips to Mackey Arena, Ohio State lost to Purdue in the regular season, then was upset by Oral Roberts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Home games will include Iowa, Michigan State and Northwestern. The Hawkeyes walked out of the Schottenstein Center victorious last season.

I hope we "average" all of our losses from last season.

  • The Buckeyes have locked up a spot in the Fort Myers Tip-off, a four-team tournament that’ll be played on Nov. 25-27. They’re guaranteed to play two games. California, Florida and Seton Hall are the others in the event. Matchups are not set yet. Holtmann, whose team will play in the Maui Invitational the next year, plans to make Ohio State’s involvement in early-season tournaments a regularity.
  • Ohio State will play its annual game in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Its opponent is unknown.
  • Towson will be part of the Buckeyes’ non-conference schedule, per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. The game will be played in Columbus, but the date has not been revealed. The Tigers were originally part of the team’s 2020-21 schedule, but they were dropped from it since the pandemic shortened the regular season.
  • Ohio State will meet John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats in the CBS Sports Classic, per Adam Zagoria of Zags Blog.
Six openings on the 31-game schedule remain.

It’s unclear whether or not the Buckeyes will be involved in the Gavitt Tipoff Games – eight annual games between Big Ten and Big East teams – in the upcoming season. They participated in them in both 2018 and 2019 and weren’t scheduled to play in them in 2020 before they all were cancelled.

OSU is hiring Tony Skinn as the third assistant coach.

I remember well Skinn's George Mason team that went to the 2006 Final Four. They had a terrific blend of good, solid players. They had six really productive guys with diverse skills, and they played really well as a team. Not a single NBA talent in the bunch. Maybe the most pure mid-major Final Four team ever. They had good solid players that came together and made a great run.

Duane Washington Jr. and E.J. Liddell, Ohio State's two leading scorers from last season, are on the official early-entry list for the NBA draft.

The list was released early Wednesday morning and does not bind players to a professional career. College players have until July 7 to withdraw from the draft process and maintain their eligibility. The next development to watch will be the list of players invited to participate in the NBA draft combine, which will take place June 21-27.
I do not see Washington staying in but E.J. is listed by one guy as a possible second rounder and I guess I could see a NBA team taking a flyer on him. Hope not because without him next season it would really hurt.

5. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

247Sports: If Duane Washington and E.J. Liddell are eligible to return to the Buckeyes after declaring for the draft and according to family members, Liddell won't be a possible transfer casualty as once reported. Washington finished this season as the Buckeyes’ leading scorer, averaging 16.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 32.2 minutes per game over 31 games. He shot 41.0 percent from the field, 37.4% from three, and 83.5% from the free-throw line on the year.

ESPN: "Kyle Young's decision to take advantage of the NCAA's extra year of eligibility was significant, as he provides physicality, toughness and experience in the frontcourt. Chris Holtmann also made two key additions from the transfer portal in Jamari Wheeler (Penn State) and Joey Brunk (Indiana). Wheeler will make an immediate impact on the defensive end of the floor."

It'll be played on Nov. 30. No time has been revealed. ESPN holds the broadcast rights all of the ACC/Big Ten games, and given the stature of these two schools, it's fair to expect this to be shown on the main ESPN channel.

The Blue Devils have now been added to a Buckeyes schedule that already featured a road game at Xavier in the Gavitt Games, two of California, Florida and Seton Hall in the Fort Myers Tip-Off and Towson and New Orleans at home. Five other non-conference games – including the CBS Sports Classic – are yet to be announced.
