Yes, there is a bias against UM in the B1G that definitely wouldn’t be there as a brand new team with a fan base full of admittedly arrogant douchebags (paraphrasing) in a completely different conference. Genius move.

Being realistic about their at best, shot in the dark and, at worst, outright shitty coaching hires (a strength and conditioning coach with literally no experience:lol:) has the natives restless.

https://mgoblog.com/content/hello-tank-wright-and-john-shoop
Brian is twisting the truth here. Either his anger is clouding his judgement or is just misinformed.

Also, his anger leads him NOT to mention that under Shoop, Penn State had the BIG's top scoring defense in 2016. At MSU he had the SEC's top scoring defense in 2018. Even in 2019 with one of the youngest units in the country, his defense was okay and improved throughout the year.

It fits with Brian's current narrative that Michigan doesn't have an adequate "football culture". Doesn't matter to him whether it is true or not because Brian is checked out and just keeps this blog because it's better than finding a real job.

Brian has become nothing but a whiner.

Brian rightly points out that Shoop’s track record as a DC is meaningless because Don Brown, he doesn’t have much of a track record as a position coach, he’s a bad recruiter, and he’ll probably be gone in a year or two when someone gives him another shot as a DC.

He tries to put a positive spin on the Wright promotion by saying he is young and will probably work hard, because what else can you say about a guy that has not done the job before?

The DFBIA true believers are fascinatingly stupid; it’s not like the results on the field, on the recruiting tail, in the locker room, or just as an observer of Jim Harbaugh as a human being would lead anyone in their right mind to be optimistic about the direction of the program, and yet here they are, being grumpy that someone isn’t blowing smoke up their collective asses about two highly questionable coaching hires from a regime that is, between the decimation of their roster and coaching staff, practically falling apart.

Meanwhile some people appear to be catching on.
No one. Hence why UM can't even sign top 10 classes anymore. I'm just here for the replies because I said the exact same thing about the Shoop hire yesterday that Brian is saying today and got absolutely crucified for it. And when OSU hires stud recruiter Kerry Coombs once the Titans get bounced this hire is going to look even dumber. Harbaugh just doesn't fucking get it. Nua gets a job because he knows Magee. Zordich get a job because he knows Durkin. Shoops gets a job because he knows Brown. And on and on. Anyone see a pattern here.

This program is in deep shit because they simply don't put the resources into recruiting that OSU does. It has nothing to do with academics or cheating and everything to do with not having our own Mark Pantoni and having a head coach who couldn't give a rats ass about recruiting. But it is damn funny seeing all you idiots keep defending every move this man makes because why again? He's 0-5 against OSU and hasn't won the B1G and has lost at least 3 games every year? If OSU lost 3 games in a season Columbus might burn down. Trieu and Wiltfong told you guys the recruiting department was a mess and UM isn't putting the effort into it that other programs are. UM loses its two best recruiters and UM's response to that is to hire a guy who is a proven dog shit recruiter? LOL great job Jim.

This is sad and depressing. Guess we just have to wait until Harbaugh goes back to the NFL because the guy just don't fucking have what it takes to run an elite program in college anymore. And finally, LOL at anyone who believes that drivel umgoblue11 wrote in his diary. That is the biggest sack of lies I've ever read in my life.
I can't believe that I am agreeing with Section 1 for second time in the same thread, but if you strip away the insults and tantrums, what he is saying in this comment is 100% correct. We are simply not recruiting at a level to allow us to compete with OSU or other elite programs. Even our better classes lacked more than a handful of true top-ranked recruits, and largely elevated their rankings with large numbers. I'm not saying that Harbaugh hasn't gotten his share of talent - DPJ, Gary and a handful of others come to mind. But, OSU has more top 100 guys IN THIS CLASS than we have gotten in the past three classes combined. Were this not enough, the retention of highly-ranked players has been pretty poor. Bottom line: While Section 1 may not be the best messenger, his complaints about our recruiting prowess are not invalid. A program with our tradition, facilities, fanbase, infrastructure and resources, coached by a former successful NFL coach, should be reeling in talent and we simply are not.

But have no fear, the DFBIA true believers are all in on Ed Warriner being a good recruiter - not because of his results on the recruiting trail, but because one of their insiders with a track record of being full of shit has apparently said he doesn’t suck as bad as everyone thinks. He must come in second place a lot for all the elite prospects.
Gattis and Moore are supposedly elite recruiters. Nua, Brown and Warriner do well.

Just a quick side note. Remember when Warriner was hired and Brian and everyone else reported he was a good oline coach but he sucks at recruiting?

That narrative according to Sam and others seems to be completely false.

As Ygritte says. We know nothing.

Just a quick refresher that they’ve had four top 100 players in their last three classes combined versus 25 for Ohio State over the same three years.

[I’m doing an insomnia fueled live stream read through of this thread, if that’s not apparent.]

Holy. Shit.

The DFBIA does not disappoint.

They’ve sucked ass for decades and it’s not Harbaugh’s fault. Rebuilding takes time and it apparently doesn’t matter that there’s no indication they’re going to improve in the next year or two... just gotta wait another five and cross your fingers, I guess.
Are you mentally challenged or something?

"If OSU lost 3 games in a season Columbus might burn down."

QUIT comparing OSU's results to Harbaugh's results!

OSU has won TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, in the last 20 years.

Michigan has won ZERO.

One was the YEAR BEFORE Harbaugh was hired!

Harbaugh took over a team that was a laughing stock, and was NOWHERE NEAR respected! He wasn't hired to get a good team "over the top". He was the best coach available and willing to take over a joke of a team.

OSU and Michigan are in different stages of their existences. "Harbaugh's recruiting" or "Harbaugh's assistant coaching hires" have NOTHING to do with that! Michigan's problems pre-date Harbaugh.

All the recruits have known THEIR ENTIRE LIVES is that OSU is one of the best teams and Michigan ISN'T (and the team that lost to Appalachian State). That's NOT a Harbaugh issue, so STOP making EVERY post about how we shouldn't stand for anything less than top 5 recruiting classes, conference championships, and national championships. OSU is literally in the way of ALL of those goals. Building a program doesn't happen instantly. It takes time. People like you only help make that process harder, for the coaches, because of negative expectations and press.
Oh, but also they’re going to win a championship next year with talent and coaches that continue to get worse every year.

HARBUAGH DEFLATED THE MSU RISE...

Have some fucking perspective...they had huge momentum and he knocked them back down to irrelevancy. Saved our program as far as I'm concerned.... unless you wanted MSU to switch places with us ?

And here comes the team with McCaffrey... I'm putting money on them to win title... not saying they'll win it but will sniff the playoff enough where I can hedge the bet.

The best is yet to come...

The program is in a much better position now than at any point since Carr, yet EmoBrian is in full bloom. It's funny, Brian wasn't this bad when we were being blown out by every team with a pulse under RichRod.
*checks last three seasons*

Lost to Penn State by 29, Ohio State by 23, Florida by 26, Wisconsin by 21, Ohio State by 29, and Bama by 19. Yep, this checks out.

Okay, last one and I’m done, although the hits just aren’t stopping.

Harbaugh needs to win more big games, but we beat Iowa and ND soundly this year and were a few less rounds of Shea playing golf, from beating PSU. OSU and Wisconsin were debacles, but we were in the Alabama game until the fourth quarter. It's not horseshoes, but anyone who witnessed Hoke against Bama has to be happy about our progress.
They beat Iowa 10-3 this year and didn’t score a point after the first quarter.

Harbaugh lost to Bama 35-16 while Hoke lost to a 13-1 Bama team that won the national title 41-14.

Clearly a huge difference.

DECADE IN REVIEW: RANKING OHIO STATE'S TOP 10 PLAYS AGAINST MICHIGAN FROM 2010-19

111644_h.jpg

It's been a decade of dominance over Michigan full of iconic plays. Here are the 10 best from 2010 to 2019.

HONORABLE MENTION: ZACH BOREN SACKS DEVIN GARDNER – 2012

aZm4C6g.gif

It wasn't a game-breaking play like you'll see on the rest of this list, but Zach Boren's 2012 sack on Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner is one of the most iconic moments of the rivalry from the past decade and is probably most Buckeyes fans' strongest memory from the 2012 victory.

It might not rank in the top 10, but it's certainly worthy of an honorable mention.

10. JOEY BOSA PICKS OFF WILTON SPEIGHT – 2015

CompassionateMediumHypacrosaurus-size_restricted.gif

Ohio State gave Jim Harbaugh one hell of a welcome to the rivalry, blasting Michigan 42-13 in Jim Harbaugh's first rivalry game as the Wolverine's head coach.

Ezekiel Elliott was the player of the game, rushing for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries, but his former roommate had the play of the game when Joey Bosa tipped Wilton Speight's pass in the air, intercepted it and ran it back 30 yards to the 10-yard line.

The lone regret is that he didn't score.

9. HERE COMES THE BOOM – 2010

giphy.gif

Ohio State had already buried Michigan when Daniel "Boom" Herron broke loose for the play of the game.

Herron took a Terrelle Pryor handoff at his own goal line, ran through one defender, and then was off to the races, running 98 yards downfield for a touchdown.

For a few seconds, it was the longest play from scrimmage in Ohio State football history until a late penalty flag was thrown on Dane Sanzenbacher for his downfield block, turning the 98-yard touchdown run into just a measly 89-yard rush.

It's still a touchdown in our hearts.

8. BRAXTON MILLER ENTERS THE FUN ZONE – 2013

WFdnB8j.gif

Braxton Miller had all kinds of fun against Michigan in his final rivalry game as Ohio State's quarterback, scoring five total touchdowns, including this 54-yard run where he breaks a Michigan safeties ankles without breaking stride and stiff-arms another into the end zone.

It doesn't quite make the cut for this list, but we're not just going to forget about that time he blocked a Michigan defender with a Michigan defender, either.

2HQJxFv.gif

7. JUSTIN FIELDS' BOUNCEBACK DAGGER – 2019

giphy.gif

Ohio State was rolling against Michigan once again in 2019, but the mood among the Buckeye faithful grew pretty grim when Justin Fields went to the sideline after suffering when looked like a serious knee injury late in the third quarter.

Thankfully, he wasn't sidelined for long. He returned to action later in the drive and made the play of the game on his very first snap back in by rolling out to buy time, setting his feet and delivering a perfect pass to Garrett Wilson in the back corner of the end zone for a 30-yard dagger touchdown.

6. ZEKE PUTS THE GAME ON ICE – 2014

OmDL.gif

Michigan played Ohio State uncomfortably close during the Buckeyes' 2014 national championship season.

With starting quarterback J.T. Barrett out for the game (and the season) with an ankle injury, the Buckeyes found themselves facing a crucial 4th-and-1 while ahead just one score late in the fourth quarter.

Then, Ezekiel Elliott made a play.

Elliott got the one yard and then plenty more, taking a handoff 44 yards to the house to put the game on ice and send the Bucekyes to the Big Ten Championship game. You know the rest.

5. DWAYNE HASKINS STRIKES – 2017

qnFA3UM.gif

A knee injury to J.T. Barrett forced redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins into his first meaningful action as Ohio State's quarterback in the biggest rivalry in all of sports.

Haskins rose to the ocassion.

On his first drive, back-to-back false starts forced Ohio State into a 3rd-and-13 situation down six points on the road late in the third quarter. Haskins responded by uncorking a bullet to Austin Mack, threading a pass right between two Michigan defenders for a first down to extend the drive that would lead to a touchdown.

Buckeye fans had that play on loop all offseason.

4. MALIK HOOKER'S PICK SIX – 2016

UahlcMT.gif

Ohio State's offense could not get anything going against one of the nation's top defenses, so Malik Hooker took it upon himself to get some points.

Swarmed with pressure from the Buckeye pass-rush, Wilton Speight tossed up a duck right into the middle of the field. Hooker collected it and swiftly deposited it right into the end zone to give the Buckeyes one of just two touchdowns they'd score in regulation.

3. CHRIS OLAVE'S BLOCKED PUNT – 2018

giphy.gif

Ohio State dominated most of the 2018 edition of The Game, but two quick Michigan scores at the end of the first half had the Wolverines right back in the game in the third quarter.

Chris Olave took care of that.

The freshman burst through the middle of the formation and flew to the football, blocking a punt and sending it right into the arms of Sevyn Banks, who took it into the end zone for a score.

Michigan never recovered, and the Buckeyes continued to put it on the "nation's best defense."

2. THE BROOKLYN DAGGER – 2016

RQZUWJc.gif

This wasn't even Curtis Samuel's most impressive play of the drive, but it's certainly the most iconic.

The very next play after J.T. Barrett gave the Buckeyes an easy first down on fourth-and-1, Samuel broke loose behind a convoy of blockers and scampered 15 yards to give the Buckeyes a 30-27 double-overtime win over No. 3 Michigan and essentially punch their ticket to the College Football Playoff.

1. TYVIS POWELL SAVES THE GAME – 2013

nrNbPPR.gif

The 2013 edition of The Game came down to one play – and Tyvis Powell came up huge.

Michigan scored a touchdown with just over 30 seconds to play in Ann Arbor to bring the Wolverines within one of the No. 3 Buckeyes. Michigan head coach Brady Hoke decided not to play for overtime, and went for the win with a two point conversion, but Powell read the play all the way.

The redshirt freshman stepped in front of a Devin Gardner pass and picked it off, sealing the game and preserving Ohio State's national title hopes with its 24th straight win.

Okay, so digging a little deeper into this kernel of fun:

And finally, LOL at anyone who believes that drivel umgoblue11 wrote in his diary. That is the biggest sack of lies I've ever read in my life.

https://mgoblog.com/diaries/myths-and-half-truths-depth-look-michigan's-recruiting-process-someone-industry

Michigan has this run by Sean McGee and Tom Gamble. Tom Gamble is a former GM and has more experience identifying talent than anyone else in the country. Sean McGee is one of the most respected guys in the industry
Who?
Underneath that is the Director of Recruiting Matt Dudek, who’s title I think causes some fans to misunderstand his role and creates some angst amongst fans when we don’t sign a class full of 4/5 stars.
If Matt Dudek was given a different title I guess there would be less concern about signing highly mediocre recruiting classes.
Here’s where I think the big difference in Michigan’s approach is—Michigan relies heavily on their assistant coaches to identify talent and recruit.
So basically confirming 100% what Wiltfong was talking about/criticizing.
What I think Wiltfong was trying to say is that Harbaugh leans more on his assistants to do this heavy lifting, whereas other staffs they have people in place to do most of the contacting and then have the assistants focus mostly on closing the deal.
So, again, 100% confirming the criticism of not being on par with other schools in how they do things.

But here’s where the REAL bullshit comes in strong.

You have seen a seismic shift in Harbaugh’s first staff to now, because I think he realized how important to have excellent coaches AND recruiters. A lot of staffs have a bunch of deadweight recruiters who don’t even look at film or hate the whole having to have constant contact with recruits. Michigan does not have that deadweight anymore.

Also, look to the age and demographic shift in Michigan’s coaching staff from older NFL-style coaches to younger, dynamic coaches who can relate to the kids and their backgrounds.
Yes, Harbaugh’s staff turnover is strategic 3D chess, not related to staff with better options fleeing from the prospect of continuing to coach with him.

Harbaugh (HC) is 56 and appears to think 80s wrestling stars are at the cutting edge of cultural reference points for kids.

Don Brown (DC) is 64 and ranked 37th nationally and 6th in the B1G in 2019 recruiting according to 247, as much stock as you can put in that.

Ed Warinner (OL) is 58 and ranked 99th nationally and 23rd in the B1G for 2019 recruiting.

Mike Zordich (CB) is 56 and ranked 224th nationally and 47th in the B1G in 2019 recruiting.

Bob Shoop (unspecified D) is 53 and ranked 429th nationally and 99th in the SEC for 2019 recruiting.

Ben McDaniels (QB) is 39, doesn’t have a recruiting rank in 2019 due to no data points, and his only experience recruiting would be at Rutgers from 2014-2015; I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he wasn’t reeling in the 5-stars during that time.

Jay Harbaugh (RB) is 30, a clear nepotism hire, is ranked 412th nationally and 80th in the B1G in 2019 recruiting, and is without a doubt mostly worthless when it comes to player development.

Josh Gattis (OC) is 36, is ranked 200th nationally and 40th in the B1G for 2019 recruiting, but hell, let’s be charitable and call him decent because he had one year at Bama.

Sherrone Moore (TE) is 33 and ranked 14th nationally and 2nd in the B1G for 2019 recruiting, he seems to do a decent job at player development based on performance (although who knows how much of that is just an 80s inspired Harbaugh influence that relies so much on the position), so let’s call this the first coach on this list that even marginally fits the stated priority for Harbaugh.

Shaun Nua (DL) is 38 and is ranked 474th nationally and 92nd in the B1G for 2019 recruiting. Outside of one year at ASU, his entire coaching experience in development and recruiting is at Navy which in no way is applicable to major college football. I’ll be generous and call him a question mark in both regards.

Tank Wright (unspecified D) doesn’t have a profile anywhere but we’ll call him roughly 30 based on when he played, and has been a S&C coach up to this point, so no experience with position coaching or recruiting. We’ll be generous again and call him a question mark for both.

So, being extremely generous, that gives Harbaugh 4/11 coaches that even remotely hit the mark for “excellent coaches and recruiters” and more realistically it’s probably 2 or even 1 proven guys at this point pending how much time Gattis actually spends recruiting or with player development.

Then we get into the excuses with grades, not paying players, and the staff not caring about recruiting rankings (let’s ignore clearly being outclassed on the field to the tune of 1-9 against top ten teams under Harbaugh is also in the mix here).

So, in summary, their coaching staff still sucks and, shockingly, the DFBIA is delusional about it.

What the hell. I was looking at OL this week ad nothing could show the difference in the two programs in terms of recruiting and player development better (well QB but I digress):

2017 recruiting OL class

tsun: Ruiz is gone, Filiaga was a back up guard last year. Hall is gone. Honigford and Stueber have already been passed by younger guys per the same depth chart.

OSU: All American to All B1G caliber starters who are all back for '20.

I'd say OSU won this year

2018

upload_2020-1-18_8-49-45.png

tsun: Mayfield was the starting RT last year and returns in '20. Hayes was the backup at LT and heir apparent.

OSU: NPF is penciled in as the most likely starter at RT. All three guys were rated higher than the two tsun signed.

tsun: near as I can tell, Rumler was the only one even in the two deep last year
OSU: oh look, more 5 star talent to reload with.

2020

looks like OSU went with two studs and three projects while tsun went with a gaggle of projects.

Recruiting rankings aren't predictive, we all know that but you can damn well see one program has a lot more room for error than the other at one of the most critical position groups on the field.

One thing to consider is that just because one of their guys becomes a starter at tsun doesn't mean that he would have at Ohio State. Throw even their best guys into the deep end of the pool at WHAC, and I think more than a few sink like a stone. The cultural differences between the two programs screams it.
