One thing to consider is that just because one of their guys becomes a starter at tsun doesn't mean that he would have at Ohio State. Throw even their best guys into the deep end of the pool at WHAC, and I think more than a few sink like a stone. The cultural differences between the two programs screams it.

No doubt. That's why I look at it through the recruiting grade lens.

Generally speaking OSU reloads with top 100 type guys, hell top 50 really, while tsun reloads with fringe top 300 types.

Looking at their national rankings, how many of their 17 signed recruits would OSU have gone after? I'd say a number less than 5. Probably just Ruiz.

I love their preoccupation with blue collar ....Starbucks and Panera not blue collar..Whine/ovich, LLEwan , not blue collar. Khaki King boy not blue collar.

I know this is simply beyond Rain Man’s ability to understand, as it deals with human beings and concepts of social interaction, but if the established culture is elitism then trying to pretend to be blue collar is going to run into difficulties.

note to Jim; you aren’t blue collar all of a sudden because you ordered your Frappuccino without the whipped cream.

Pretend is the operative word. As with the revenge tour and the dunce videos, they think the stunt is the end in and of itself. Throw on the mechanics shirts, and they magically become as blue collar as the 70s Steelers. No work or sacrifice required.

So Rosanne Barr using Jessica Alba beauty products doesn't make her Jessica Alba?

From the article:
Now all of this is to say that recruiting services do generally hit on the 5-star guys because almost anyone can pick out a kid with that type of talent. I would say the best indicator of how well Michigan’s class is doing, is by how many of the kids you landed were being courted heavily by any of the Top-10 (Alabama, Auburn, A&M, UGA, Clemson, OSU, Penn State, Notre Dame, Texas, etc.). This will change based on regionality, but a guy like Braiden McGregor is a great example. Clemson, Notre Dame, and OSU all really wanted him and was a huge recruiting win for Michigan.
If this is the scUM standard of excellence, then they are failing miserably.

I went back through the past five recruiting classes (2016-2020) and looked to see how many scUM signees were "courted heavily" by Ohio State. I came up with 12 names out of 129 total signees, which equates to 9.3%. That's it.

Class of 2016: Rashan Gary; Kareem Walker
Class of 2017: Donovan Peoples-Jones; Luiji Vilain; Oliver Martin
Class of 2018: Aidan Hutchinson
Class of 2019: Daxton Hill; Trevor Keegan; Nolan Rumler
Class of 2020: Braiden McGregor; Blake Corum; Makari Paige

We all remember that Kareem Walker was "courted heavily" by Ohio State, but that the staff ultimately dropped him after he committed to the Buckeyes. Luiji Vilain had an Ohio State offer that probably was not commitable. Take those two out and we're down to 10/129, or 7.8%.

Martin, Hutchinson, Keegan, Paige, and Corum were all to some extent Plan B type recruits that weren't courted all that heavily by Ohio State.

So that leaves Gary, DPJ, Hill, Rumler, and McGregor as the prospects that Ohio State really wanted. Five prospects in five years. Five prospects out of 129 total signees (3.9%). That more than anything else explains why Michigan can't beat Ohio State - they really are playing with guys that we didn't want.

as a follow up here is their last two deep with the departures noted:

Spanellis is in the transfer portal. Better cross him off your list.

This, this, a thousand times this.

That's exactly who they are.

Meanwhile some people appear to be catching on.

But have no fear, the DFBIA true believers are all in on Ed Warriner being a good recruiter - not because of his results on the recruiting trail, but because one of their insiders with a track record of being full of shit has apparently said he doesn’t suck as bad as everyone thinks. He must come in second place a lot for all the elite prospects.

Just a quick refresher that they’ve had four top 100 players in their last three classes combined versus 25 for Ohio State over the same three years.

[I’m doing an insomnia fueled live stream read through of this thread, if that’s not apparent.]

Holy. Shit.

The DFBIA does not disappoint.

They’ve sucked ass for decades and it’s not Harbaugh’s fault. Rebuilding takes time and it apparently doesn’t matter that there’s no indication they’re going to improve in the next year or two... just gotta wait another five and cross your fingers, I guess.

Oh, but also they’re going to win a championship next year with talent and coaches that continue to get worse every year.

*checks last three seasons*

Lost to Penn State by 29, Ohio State by 23, Florida by 26, Wisconsin by 21, Ohio State by 29, and Bama by 19. Yep, this checks out.

Okay, last one and I’m done, although the hits just aren’t stopping.

They beat Iowa 10-3 this year and didn’t score a point after the first quarter.

Harbaugh lost to Bama 35-16 while Hoke lost to a 13-1 Bama team that won the national title 41-14.

Clearly a huge difference.
My absolute favorite part of the DFBIA boards over the past couple of years is the continual walking back/resetting of expectations.

Dec '14/Jan '15 -- They have landed an elite, rock star of a head coach who, BONUS, is a died-in-the-wool "_ichigan Man." Elite recruits are going to fall at his feet to play for him. Our QB problems are over because he is the "QB whisperer." His version of NFL-approved "manball" is going to put all.of these pansy spread offenses to shame. Multiple conference titles, playoff appearances and National Titles are all but guaranteed. Oh, and The Game? Tides are going to turn because Jim Harbaugh "gets it." The days of underachieving _ichigan teams will soon be a distant memory.

Jan '20 - We just can't compete with online courses and bagmen because Jimmy does it the right way. His recruiting failures are overblown. The only reason Shea Patterson didn't run roughshod over everyone is because he likes to play golf a little too much. Yeah, tOSU is kicking our ass in every measurable way, but only because they pay for players and let them take online courses. We beat the teams we should now. It could be a lot worse.

Jim Harbaugh is set to make $8M in 2020. They're paying for 2014/2015 expectations and getting LLoyd Carr 2004-2007 results.

They'd be thrilled with Carr's 2006 results at this point.

On this day in Buckeye history (the date was January 18, 2001, exactly 17 years ago).....

JIM TRESSEL'S “310 DAYS” SPEECH MARKED THE TURNING POINT IN THE OHIO STATE VS. MICHIGAN RIVALRY

“I assure you that you will be proud of our young people in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on the football field.”

Those words, spoken in front of a packed audience of Buckeye fans who'd suffered through an abysmal record against Michigan under the previous head coach, marked the turning point in the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

Jim Tressel made a promise on that day, all-but guaranteeing a win over the bitter rivals to the north before he'd even coached a single practice. And he delivered – not just 310 days later with that single 26-20 victory, but in all the years that followed.

Tressel's inaugural address changed the tone of the rivalry. In Columbus, it became the only game that matters. And it shows.

Tressel rattled off a 9-1 record in The Game in his 10 years at Ohio State before passing the torch to Urban Meyer, who went a perfect 7-0 in his seven years. Ryan Day has been at the helm for just one season, but through one game, he's 1-0.

Through 19 seasons after Tressel made his promise, Ohio State is 17-2 after a 2-10-1 record under John Cooper.

That speech flipped the rivalry. Now it's up to Day to keep it that way.
