2020-2021 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

“I don’t know that our league needs me or anyone else (to discuss how good it is),” Holtmann said. "I haven’t tried to politick for it to be categorized as the best league in the country. I just think it’s going to be us or the Big 12 and I think most people would say the depth of our league is different right now than the depth of the Big 12. Just the quality top to bottom of our league.

“I think most people recognize the greatness of the Big Ten at this moment in its time as a basketball conference.”

In his most recent projections, updated on Dec. 22, ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has nine Big Ten teams making the NCAA Tournament come the season’s end. This shows the depth of the conference, as Holtmann pointed out, and the difficulty for any team to win on any given night.

But, for the teams that survive the treacherous path that is this conference season and make the NCAA Tournament, the Big Ten certainly does a great job of preparing its teams for the postseason.

“Absolutely,” Holtmann said about being prepared for the Big Dance. “Even a couple years ago when our league wasn’t quite as strong, but it still got, I think eight teams in the tournament, which were the most it had ever gotten… Even going into that NCAA Tournament, we’d gotten beat up but we felt extremely prepared.

“And when we ‘upset’ Iowa State -- I think the seeding might have said that but I felt like we were a team that was capable of winning in the NCAA Tournament because of the caliber of the league that we had fought our way through.”

I was really high on Justice Sueing before the season. I have to admit, he has a ways to go before he is a 30-minute per game player at OSU. He needs to get sharper, tougher and stronger. At this point, if I'm Holt, I work to replace Sueing in the starting lineup with Towns, as Seth seems to be more crisp and polished offensively, and brings a more calming, veteran presence.

Not sure if Towns is ready for all those minutes but I agree with you regarding Sueing. Has been sort of a disappointment from what I anticipated. I would not mind Jallow eating some of his minutes.

Jallow is absolutely vital to this team with his high energy/effort, quickness, versatility and athleticism. That being said, I like Towns' scoring ability as being superior to Jallow and TBH, Musa is an ideal bench player - you don't need to run any plays for him and can sub him in for whomever is struggling or in foul trouble between the 2-4 positions, and he helps with matchups as needed. I agree that Seth is not necessarily ready for a 30 mpg load at the moment, but I think OSU needs to work him towards that point. I see the eventual starting 5 to be CJ, Duane, Seth, EJ and Kyle.

PSU game "postponed."

With basketball scheduling I don't even understand how that is gonna work. PSU already has to reschedule their Wisconsin game first. It is gonna be a domino effect of games crush or cancellations.

what the hell is going on in the state of Pennsylvania because Pitt had to cancel their game with the Catholic school in Indiana

I get the sense that many are dissatisfied with where OSU is at this season. That's fine. But I am sure OSU planned on DJ Carton not bailing after less than one season. The big man recruiting is curious, I admit, but I have confidence Holtmann will sort it out soon. They can still have a good stretch run and be a top-25 type team this season, but they need Jallow playing, and to work Meechie into the rotation.

Fans still haven't learned to manage their expectations down from Thad's peak years. Not that Holtmann can't get us closer to that standard than we are now, but he is still trying to build his program here and it has been a bit 1-step forward, 1-step back with the transfers out and the transfers in currently not playing great.

The struggles to replace the Wesson bros on both sides of the ball shouldn't have surprised anyone. For me, things don't look that much different than I thought they were gonna look once the B1G confirmed that it was gonna be brutal again.

I did think Sueing would be a bit more of a positive than he is currently and I was hoping CJ's performance would look more like the end of last season. On the plus side, Key has been about as good as I hoped he would be coming in and we are getting a little more from guys like Musa and Ahrens than I thought we might.

But you look at all the pieces together and the janky nature of a pandemic season... let's just say that I understand why Holtmann is still searching for his best line-ups and rotation. What makes it harder is that I think Kyle and EJ are the only guys consistent on both ends of the court but neither of them can shoot. Small wonder our FG% is terrible.
